    Exclamation FJ40 Tips needed.

    Assalaam o alaykom all!

I am intending to buy a LC FJ40 Army auctioned. The SUV has a petrol engine, 4000cc, 1981 model. It's not in start condition. Means I have to install battery, head cylinders, maybe more stuff. It's seats are present and need to be refurbished. (These are the details after physical inspection of the SUV and were given to me by the seller). The seller is a dealer.

Can the experts please guide me what to check before buying the SUV and what would be the estimated cost in its restoration. Also, please let me know if there are any questions.

He demanded 270k for the SUV and I still have to make an offer to him.

    Jazaak ALLAH Khair!

these days the prices of fj40 are not more than 2lacs as many are being auctioned. it will need around 3 to 4 lacs atleast including it's registration to bring it to a reasonable price but than your health and temperament will become unreasonable as it may take three to four months of difficult effort. and remember only 83 and 84 models have come with 4fwd gear, all previous are 3 fwd. and if u r dealing with a dealer, "GOD BLESS U THAN".

Babaraffan AOA, I am not going to discourage or scare you. FJ40 projects are money pit – The last few folks who have restored (including me) have spent more than 8 lakhs to fully restore and in few cases more. It is not the initial price of vehicle; the fun begins once you start restoring.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

you need to redo things and replace engines, gear boxes, some time twice and in my case some time paint it twice too

Agreed with bro issidique i personally lost the patience between my resto and gathered my energies after few weeks to start working on it again.

As far as money is concerned you should keep the budget of 600k to 800k approx for a nice fj

Points to be taken care of before buying an army retired fj:

The auction year should be the same of procurement year, as every passing month will increase the registration cost.
The engine should have engine oil and spark plugs placed on it as in many cases people have found water in engines which result into a high resto cost of engine.
Both drive shafts should be intact.
Model should not be older than 83-84 as older models came with 3speed gear.
Few more things like, rust, body parts, dash board parts, engine parts etc should be checked as these small items are hard to find and need alot of money if you want to resto it according to stock specs.

    Good luck
