It was a 21.4 km long track and participants had to complete 4 rounds each. There was no qualifying round and the starting order was based on lucky draws. This gentleman, who was probably from Hyderabad, had a 2UZ (4.7 petrol engine) and was ahead of me for the first round's launch. The track was a little dusty and I was hoping against hope that he will be fast and I will not have to waste time in his dust. The time difference between each participant was 4 minutes.

During 1st round, we caught his dust by the 12th or 13th kilometer. Had to brake a couple of times when his dust made the track invisible. Luckily, by 18th kilometer, because of feasable sea breeze, I got a break and while he was doing about 145 on a relatively straight patch, I crossed him at 175. He reached the finish line about 1 minute after me.
funny comment from the spectators about the Evo "missing" at launch... the robby gordon compilation was quite nice... guess what passed by (albeit quite slowly) when gordon was lying belly up... one of the dakar hiluxes.. looked like the imperial one... have a few videos of that ...will post them later

Doesn't sound like a 2UZ and hardly launches like one, most probably a standard 2F in there..... but anyways 145 kmph is just about how fast a stockish FJ40 with windshield and soft top could probably be taken upto in Nooriabad regardless of the powerplant.

Having said that, the first camera pass on the following video is supposedly at 140kmph.... and yes thats more like what a 2UZ-J40 should sound like

The way he mimicks the sound is even funnier! Though not as funny as Zafar Magsi and Adnan's dialogue about Evo speed limiter

Loved the Ustad Goardon compilation, someone really made a good effort of pulling together the videos! Thanks @nn! This year's Dakar was quite a blast actually, and Robby just had too much going on really! Expecting a big showdown next year between the Minis, Usta Goardon and probably Nasser Al-Atiyah on the Hilux!

Boss you have been there yourself,, you know that when a driver says he has that engine, others dont question it. Plus, I am not technical at all and my knowledge about 1UZ and 2UZ engines is limited to what you have been writing on Pakwheels. This FJ owner and I exchanged a few sentences only, mainly wishing each other a safe rally. He asked about Evo's engine and than I asked in return, so,,,, have no idea what he actually had. This fellow is also not a regular rallyist, so that day was our first and last meeting till date.

Bushranger has a whole range for 4X4 applications. If sourced from Dubai cost varies between 5000Rs-25000Rs for various models. The more expensive ones can fill up much quicker and are very usefull in bigger sized tyres. They can even fill up 35" Tyres! Mind you upper range models are much bigger in size and heavy. Most can be connected from battery terminal. Have been using one for two years, and its very sturdy and reliable.

Default Some Dakar History I stumbled Upon : The Year was 1985....

Toyota 40 series cars posted the largest number of enteries in the Dakar during the 1979-1985 period mainly driven by private French teams. While there apparently was always an FJ in the top ten during this time, there was only one podium and only two stage victories both on successive stages in 1985. Stage 13 was dominated by the BOSTEELS / VANELSLANDE - TOYOTA FJ 45 n?457 while Stage 14 went to the </SPAN>FOUGEROUSE/JACQUEMAR TOYOTA</SPAN> FJ60 which ultimately took 3rd overall. Apparently, these remain Toyota's only two stage victories at the Dakar, and it seems it would be another 27 years until another Toyota would make the Dakar podium again (De Villiers-Hilux 2012!?). Interestingly, this was also the first year that Mitsubishi Pajeros scored a win with a 1st and 2nd and some memorable pics of two Pajeros and two FJ60s at the finish line.....

I do believe that given today's economic conditions, in Pakistan if a vintage/pre 1986 category was to be introduced on the rally scene it would really bring in a significant number of new participants and add some fresh interest to the game ... but then that just may be a nostalgic old man dreaming

Interesting idea, though people will raise questions if the engines, suspension and drivetrain etc are used from post 1986 models, as it would not be with the spirit of vintage category.

With fuel prices going up every day,,, why not introduce a CNG category i.e. if one could find it anywhere around and,,, lets not forget,,, the Hydrogen/water category as well

Haha. Well yesterday, I got HOBC for PKR 125 per litre as there seemed to be a petrol crisis in Islamabad and the only pumps without endless lines were making a killing. My immediate thoughts were "chalo, awam ka to patta nahin, par lor** lag gayee hamarey rallying"

Nevertheless, I think the motivation behind the dumb suggestion was to increase participation at the rallying events. As I understand, one can count the number of new rally entrants (in past 5 years or so) on your fingertips with one hand. Also easier because the majority of them seem to be on this thread apart from perhaps Adnan Siddiqui & Ali Aden. There can be several reasons for this, but its easy to say that the space and path available for new entrants is quite restricted by several counts: financial costs, unrewarding outcomes and lack of knowledge being just a few of the factors.

In the US, it is said that rally goers have increased during the past few years. As the economy has gone down, there are a lot of people who have decent running business or a stock of savings who all of a sudden have a lot more free time which they used for hobbies which they could not pursue earlier. Helps obviously that the Score and BITD races have over a dozen categories starting from million dollar trophy trucks down to $20k stock beetles.

A major issue with our rally scene seems to be that there is no rulebook for races which should be prepared by the organisers and the rules published way ahead of races. This would also avoid driver meetings turning into jirga meetings and having subjective understanding and application of rules.

Though even with the categories well defined, there will always be loopholes but playing around the rules for Dakar/Score Baja Stock/T2 categories and having a certain time break (1985/1986), it could be possible to work something out...
