Default The Phantom Of City Sadar Road

When I first started this thread, I had just taken delivery of a stock, recently-auctioned 1984 TLC FJ40.

Gaari to khareed lee, lekin I had little/no idea of what I was going to end up doing to the vehicle. For a very long time, I planned to give it a "decent" sort of makeover: something involving some nice tyres, a respectable paint-job, comfortable seats, a roll cage, and that's about it. At that time, little did I know what was in store for me...

Somewhere along the line, this project developed a life of its own. Baaton baaton mein, it metamorphosed from being a quick, run-of-the-mill restoration into something quite ambitious and challenging. Something that was in-your-face, and in-your-guts. Something, the likes of which we had seen chronicled in the pages of Off Roader magazines...but something which we'd never really attempted back home.

This rebuild is STILL ongoing. It's far from over, just yet. But along the way, it's indeed become something which seems to have a life of its own. Ironically, this as-yet-unfinished vehicle has developed a...character.

While it may not be the most ego-stroking fact...a lot of people know "The Phantom...jiss ka maalik woh Fouad Hafeez hai"...rather than knowing "Fouad Hafeez...jiss ke paas woh Phantom hai"

Also, along the way, this vehicle has been instrumental in my making a huge number of friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers alike. Without a doubt, all of these people are gentlemen; sporting enthusiasts, and engine afficianados, and automotive hobbyists...with whom, a common love for the sport, has brought us to common ground. Their support, good wishes, advice, expert opinions, constructive criticism, and attention to detail, has made this hunk of steel slowly emerge into its current shape. I have no doubt that the end product will be a fusion of the ideas and aspirations of all of these friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers. To all of you; my deepest gratitude. It has been (and will be) one helluva ride, so far!

For now, though, this thread (having picked up over 700 replies) is going to undergo some TLC of its own. A chronicle (in pictures) of all the water that's flown under the bridge, thus far, as we progress towards the desired end state (shown in the last picture of this post). Let the photos begin!

And...I think it's about time for some of the photos to change here, too.

So the diff locks can come later, enjoy the offroading in the meantime!

The reverse is actually true, Boss. Inn projects ne mujhe tame lar liya hai. The fact that everything MAY appear to be under control is just an optical illusion!

Actually, this is the site where I snapped one of the Phantom's tie-rod ends a few days earlier. I simply HAD to go back and retry...it was the right thing to do.

I know it sounds almost unbelievable, but the Phantom is ready.

The body work is complete (Alhamdolillah), and it's pretty much turned out to be exactly the way I wanted it. Monday, it goes to get itself a coat of astar. We're using black astar for the beast...let's see how it turns out.

Nice hard work(more of the restrain and patience though)done so far.I have seen your rig in its adoption of various shapes right from its stock configuration to the current status..Hats of to you for doing these kind of radical designs is not an every day job since all these guys are trained to do run of the mill and routine jobs with no imagination or adhering to the specs required for the job to be done at times..I have been into projects of all kinds through out my life and have come to this conclusion that these guys have the ability to kill your project along with your desire any time they want to if you do not adhere to your target dates and objectives!Anyways congrats on getting your dream machine as per your desires!

    LOL

I kept a very simple approach...

Me: "Ustaad Ji...aap se yeh yeh kaam karwana hai. Kitne paise honge, aur kaam kab khatam hoga?"
Ustaad Ji: "Saab Ji...iss ke dus hazaar rupaiye honge, aur kaam 20 July ko khatam ho jaaye ga"
Me: "naien, Ustaad Ji. Iss ke mein gyaarah hazaar rupaiye doonga. Aur agar kaam 20 July tak na hua, tau aap ki dukaan ko aag laga doonga, aap ke auzaar ko aag laga doonga, aur aap ko Pindi zilley se hijrat karne pe majboor kar doonga. Samjhey kiya?"

Just kidding. To be honest, though, I've been lucky in getting a true Dream Team of technicians / craftsmen / workers for this project...otherwise it simply could NOT have been undertaken, let alone have reached completion. And when I say "completion", that too, is a bit of a misnomer...because this project will never truly be "completed". I have the feeling that in weeks and months to come, it'll continue to simply evolve, and we'll continue to push the envelope in terms of design, function, form, performance, and aesthetics.

Of course, all of this wouldn't have been possible without the support that this project has been getting from so many friends and acquaintances, alike. In that way, this vehicle is very much a progeny of this thread...where crazed truckers and wild-eyed enthusiasts have gathered, and merged advice/argument, and performance/passion, and ergonomics/aesthetics into the monster that the Phantom truly is. So here, I'd like to reiterate my thanks to all the supporters (both vocal and silent), whose good wishes have been intrinsic to the design philosophy, and the actual rebuild process.

    The roller-coaster-ride, though...continues!
