Default The Phantom Of City Sadar Road

When I first started this thread, I had just taken delivery of a stock, recently-auctioned 1984 TLC FJ40.

Gaari to khareed lee, lekin I had little/no idea of what I was going to end up doing to the vehicle. For a very long time, I planned to give it a "decent" sort of makeover: something involving some nice tyres, a respectable paint-job, comfortable seats, a roll cage, and that's about it. At that time, little did I know what was in store for me...

Somewhere along the line, this project developed a life of its own. Baaton baaton mein, it metamorphosed from being a quick, run-of-the-mill restoration into something quite ambitious and challenging. Something that was in-your-face, and in-your-guts. Something, the likes of which we had seen chronicled in the pages of Off Roader magazines...but something which we'd never really attempted back home.

This rebuild is STILL ongoing. It's far from over, just yet. But along the way, it's indeed become something which seems to have a life of its own. Ironically, this as-yet-unfinished vehicle has developed a...character.

While it may not be the most ego-stroking fact...a lot of people know "The Phantom...jiss ka maalik woh Fouad Hafeez hai"...rather than knowing "Fouad Hafeez...jiss ke paas woh Phantom hai"

Also, along the way, this vehicle has been instrumental in my making a huge number of friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers alike. Without a doubt, all of these people are gentlemen; sporting enthusiasts, and engine afficianados, and automotive hobbyists...with whom, a common love for the sport, has brought us to common ground. Their support, good wishes, advice, expert opinions, constructive criticism, and attention to detail, has made this hunk of steel slowly emerge into its current shape. I have no doubt that the end product will be a fusion of the ideas and aspirations of all of these friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers. To all of you; my deepest gratitude. It has been (and will be) one helluva ride, so far!

For now, though, this thread (having picked up over 700 replies) is going to undergo some TLC of its own. A chronicle (in pictures) of all the water that's flown under the bridge, thus far, as we progress towards the desired end state (shown in the last picture of this post). Let the photos begin!

And...I think it's about time for some of the photos to change here, too.

    All questions MUST be answered!

I use either of two cameras; a Sony Cybershot (15MP), or the camera on my phone (a Samsung Galaxy SIII, 8MP). Before uploading, a good idea is to optimise the photos in Microsoft Office. And to be completely honest...I have absolutely no pretences about my photography. I'm pretty terrible at it!

AoA, Amir. Thank you for the kind and appreciative words.

Pakwheels itself, is a good place to start your search, as you will probably be able to find a number of restored FJ40s in the ads/for sale section. A number of restored vehicles are also made by the artisans of City Sadar Road each year, for the purpose of being sold. So you could also ask around over there. I'm afraid that's the only advice I can offer. Ultimately, your budget, your choices, your intended use, and your willingness to go out and buy, are going to decide which vehicle is best for you.

    Best of luck.

    Some More Updates

We've FINALLY managed to get the wiring, et al, sorted out. The second-hand triple-action lights were posing somewhat of a problem, since they had broken mounts...but in Pakistan, where there is a will; you can depend upon our technicians to find a way!

The end-product is very satisfying. With the HiD lights installed in the headlights, and the four beefy lights mounted at the roof-line, the field of view at night is VERY well illuminated indeed.

The heater and the A/C have also been made functional. VERY chilled in summers, and nice and toasty in winters.

Yet another thing I found whilst going through the junkyards, was a nifty little coolbox / freezer / hotbox. I've been led to believe that it's a genuine Toyota component (from a Tacoma, possibly?), and with three settings ("hot", "cold" and "ice") it should be a handy thing for such a rig. Frozen tea, hot soda, and cool pizza. Yummy! The Phantom Of City Sadar Road - biggrin

Lastly, I wasn't too fond of the modified instrument cluster, which was backlit with LEDs, but had very poor clarity overall. Sooo...out with the new, and in with the old. The cluster looks much better, stock.

    Pictures!

Thanks, Taimoor. I'd gone to check up the progress on the other Impala (the '67) and thought I'd take the '65 for a bit of an outing. I wish you'd stopped by, so we could have met and conversed. Khair...next time, sahee!

    Cheers.

Amazing work done! I've been visiting here on and off. Thumbs-up for the efforts.

Is there any separate thread for impalas? Really interested to see details

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement. Yes, there is a separate thread for the Impalas...but it's been kind of dormant for some time. Feel free to go through whatever is on there, brother.

MashaAllah, looking great now with the accessories like lights, wipers etc. Excellent decision with the stock instrument panel.

    Q. What is this on/off switch between heater and A/C control box?
    Q. Are you using the slim type duct for heater or a standard duct?

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Whilst almost everything in this ride has "gone under the knife" and been modified, I'm keen for it to retain it's "40-ness". Some of the stock styling cues are part of that effort.

This is a killswitch. It basically "kills" all the electricals in the vehicle. Useful if you're on fire!

And a slimmer duct has been used for the heater, because what with the piping required for the A/C, things were getting crowded in the cabin.

Ok. Thanks. This kill switch is a good idea. I have bought the A/C for my FJ40 but has not yet installed it due to time constraint. Will install it on my next trip. With the present setup in engine bay, compressor fitting is a bit of a challenge. Facing engine from front, upper right is air cleaner and its mounting. Below air cleaner is alternator. Upper left is power steering pump and below that there is no place due to radiator pipe. I will try to find it's original dry type air cleaner which fits on top of the valve cover so that we should get the free space on upper right corner for compressor. But these Oil Type air cleaners are very efficient. Trouble free and reduce engine noise better then any other cleaner. Lets see how it will go!
