Default The Phantom Of City Sadar Road

When I first started this thread, I had just taken delivery of a stock, recently-auctioned 1984 TLC FJ40.

Gaari to khareed lee, lekin I had little/no idea of what I was going to end up doing to the vehicle. For a very long time, I planned to give it a "decent" sort of makeover: something involving some nice tyres, a respectable paint-job, comfortable seats, a roll cage, and that's about it. At that time, little did I know what was in store for me...

Somewhere along the line, this project developed a life of its own. Baaton baaton mein, it metamorphosed from being a quick, run-of-the-mill restoration into something quite ambitious and challenging. Something that was in-your-face, and in-your-guts. Something, the likes of which we had seen chronicled in the pages of Off Roader magazines...but something which we'd never really attempted back home.

This rebuild is STILL ongoing. It's far from over, just yet. But along the way, it's indeed become something which seems to have a life of its own. Ironically, this as-yet-unfinished vehicle has developed a...character.

While it may not be the most ego-stroking fact...a lot of people know "The Phantom...jiss ka maalik woh Fouad Hafeez hai"...rather than knowing "Fouad Hafeez...jiss ke paas woh Phantom hai"

Also, along the way, this vehicle has been instrumental in my making a huge number of friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers alike. Without a doubt, all of these people are gentlemen; sporting enthusiasts, and engine afficianados, and automotive hobbyists...with whom, a common love for the sport, has brought us to common ground. Their support, good wishes, advice, expert opinions, constructive criticism, and attention to detail, has made this hunk of steel slowly emerge into its current shape. I have no doubt that the end product will be a fusion of the ideas and aspirations of all of these friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers. To all of you; my deepest gratitude. It has been (and will be) one helluva ride, so far!

For now, though, this thread (having picked up over 700 replies) is going to undergo some TLC of its own. A chronicle (in pictures) of all the water that's flown under the bridge, thus far, as we progress towards the desired end state (shown in the last picture of this post). Let the photos begin!

And...I think it's about time for some of the photos to change here, too.

Actually, Hasan, when we were initially building the Phantom, we had a vast array of choices with regards to how we wanted to style the body, because we were building something which was so "un-original" that it was really quite inconsequential to keep things stock, or not.

In certain cases, we resorted to some stock parts (bonnet, cowl, grille etc) to keep prices down. In certain cases we resorted to stock parts (for the tub, tail-lights etc) because they were more functional and aesthetically pleasing. However, you might notice that the front indicators on the Phantom are NOT stock. They're from an early 70 Series Land Cruiser. This was for function, rather than form...since this cluster enables the indicators to be seen from front and sides.

Honestly speaking, not even a single bolt on this truck is by "accident" or because of an oversight. All of it - good, or bad, or ugly - is by design.

Well spotted. The RR has been suffering from some neglect, lately. You're quite right...I think Usman and Co. should be called upon to work some magic with the car, soon.

The Phantom is a regular visitor to Sadar, in Pindi (where the interior is being rebuilt). However, Raja Bazar mein le ke jaana would be perilous. I'd be frightened of running over some car parked nearby.

    DIY Painting

This is one aspect of car rebuilds that I just love. Some of you may have seen this when I was flame-painting one of my old Impalas. Twice. Hehehe.

After much serious thought, I've come to the conclusion that I am NOT going to paint the Phantom any particular colour, and leave it in matte black primer. This too, is quite by design. The truck doesn't NEED to have shiny, neat-looking, gleaming paint. In fact, it'd be quite an injustice, to try and make its rugged good looks "presentable".

That doesn't mean that the paint job isn't going to happen. For now, I've decided that ALL paint on the Phantom is going to be DIY. From rattle can spray paint, no less. For now, this is going to consist of white embellishments to go with the matte black colour. However, it's perfectly conceivable, that some months down the line, I may be tempted to spray paint it in a shade of camouflage. Or tiger stripes. Or something else.

Some pictures to show the results of my labour...all of this; with cans of aerosol spray paint.

    Sir

Please allow me to dislike the idea of doing it black and white on exterior as well as interior I have witnessed each and every development on the monster and read all of your posts from A to Z and loved most of them so i have a right to dislike this too

It should have been painted all on in any dull color may be any shade of your choice of green or brown or camel etc

    Cheers
    Regards

Boss, you've been one of the most ardent supporters of this rig...and indeed, you've been a witness to all of its various incarnations and avatars. By that stretch alone, your criticism is welcomed as much as your appreciation.

Let me explain further. You'd doubtless recall how everything on the Phantom is "modular". Keep it fully-closed. Remove the hardtop. Add pipe doors. Go completely topless. Door-less. The exterior is something very similar to that philosophy...which is why the truck will NEVER be painted professionally. It MIGHT have white stripes, for now. A couple of months down the line, it may be brown. Beige. Green. Tiger-striped. Or back to plain matte black.

I would enjoy using it, as a "steel canvas" for such exploits. Who knows...one of these days, some of us friends might even get together for a "Paint The Phantom" session. After all...the most important part of building such a creature, is having fun...right?

" A steel Canvas" interesting............... Brig. Saaab
I would take it to one of the art schools and let the students use their imaginations on it.
Outcome will be outstanding. Clear coat if required.

That's a really good idea. Unfortunately, it's a path I've already ventured down...unsuccessfully. A lot of artists are either unfamiliar with the medium to use, have limited airbrush skills, or are just too busy to cater to a flight of fantasy like this one. Hence, the reason why mein khud hee kuchh achha sa kar loonga.

And yes...the last photo has been altered slightly...so as to prevent the hairy leg of the mechanic who was under the vehicle at the time, from spoiling the picture.

    Salam Fouad Bhai,
Hope your well, its been a long time! I hear you on your approach to painting the Phantom. We have had a similar approach to painting the Concordia FJ40 where we invariably put on a DIY coat on some part or the other around the rally season each year. It works for our rig to a large extent because your never sure what damage or abuse it might end up with from bush-wacking to rollovers. BUT as a result, the body is quite a mess by now with various coats of paint and repainting and I am told will be a nightmare if anyone tried to remove the paint and do a proper paint job. Still not really a problem as its all standard FJ40 parts which are available with the paan walas down here if you need anything. With the Phantom, which has several custom designed and hand made body panels/parts which will be quite difficult to recreate in the future, I would really recommend that you should get the car painted properly as once and for all to ensure longevity of the body parts. Otherwise, with various coats of paint and potentially small areas of rust creeping in over time, things will ultimately not feel very rewarding. The Phantom actually deserves as good of a paint job (if not better) than your other car, the one with the flames.... Anyhow thats just my view in light of my experience, I am sure you ae best positioned to decide. All the best!
