Default Advice Required - Pajero (94-98) vs Surf (96-98)

    Hi All,

As the title suggests, I am looking for some advice/feedback on purchasing either a Pajero (94-98 2.8 Intercooler) or a Surf (96-98). The primary considerations for purchasing the vehicle are as follows (in that order)

    1. Family vehicle, primarily for city driving with the occasional trip to Lahore (via motorway)
    2. Fuel Economy
    3. Easier maintenance (Cannot afford to spend 'quality' time with mechanics every weekend)
    4. Comfort
    5. Resale ( However, plan to keep the vehicle for at-east 2 years)

I have been advised by some that Pajero's have issues with their engines, particularly at consistently high speeds (such as the motorway) and its parts/other maintenance is quite expensive. However, I have found it to be far more luxurious than the other jeeps. On the other hand, Surf delivers consistent performance but is lacking in comfort though its parts are available relatively easier.

Having said that, I will appreciate any feedback/comments that will make my decision easier. Pls feel free to add any parameter that I should consider that I might have missed. Also, if anyone has a suitable vehicle for sale, pls PM me. Thanks in advance!

PS-- I apologize if there is a similar thread elsewhere else but I did use the search option before posting but could'nt find anything.

Well, seems to be like a no brainer. I would definitely advise going for the Surf as opposed to Pajero.

Parts like you said are easily available.
Resale of a Surf will be better than Pajero, on any day.
The Pajero might offer more 'shashkarz' in the cabin, but for the long run, literally as well, the Surf would be a wiser choice.
Having said that, I'm sure our Mitsu loyalists will have their reasons for being pro Pajero.

    1. Family vehicle, primarily for city driving with the occasional trip to Lahore (via motorway) - SURF
    2. Fuel Economy - 50/50 depends on factors like if the Surf has 1KZ auto vs manual
    3. Easier maintenance (Cannot afford to spend 'quality' time with mechanics every weekend) - SURF
    4. Comfort - PAJERO (Although its not like the Surf is an uncomfortable SUV)
    5. Resale ( However, plan to keep the vehicle for at-east 2 years) - SURF

In the end, i guess it will come down what you really think is the right choice with respect to parts, resale, comfort, etc etc. Good luck! Do share pics when you have purchased it

    Khan Sahab

When you talk about comfort you dont talk about SUVS cuz the comfort factor is very much limited in SUVS whether Toyota or Mitsubishi.

Comfort counts only in sedans of any make (Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi etc etc)

Hence if the comfort factor is already limited in the type of vehicles we are discussing than why to debate on it??? Or rather why highlight the comfort parameter only while deciding which SUV to buy???

Now apart from comfort, i think in durability, resale, parts surf is a better option than pajero. Have heard from quiet some people that any turbo intercooler engine when run on a long route with ac/passengers/luggage in hot summers get overheated no matter how good your engine cooling system/radiator/turbo is.

In my opinion intercooler turbo is a headache, also its not good for our paki road/climate conditions.

Baqi apki apni marzi ha abhi tu mazeed comments aaenge fellow wheelers ki taraf se
You will beat us with technology and speed???? we will beat you with experience.

clean surf's are expensive and when you go for a clean one you get in range of prado 96 that is better then surf.

Secondly you can find Pajero cheaper then the toyota's.

Conclusion is every thing comes up to personal liking. And condition of the vehicle which you will buy. If its well maintained vehicle even if its pajero or surf it will serve you well.
    Diesel is rs100 + now.

I would agree, in the end everything boils down to personal liking.

    @ Khan sahib.....

Given the utility you have spelled above i would also recommend Pajero 2800. My recommendations would be based on the fact that i have kept both, Surf and Pajero at one time. If you need to talk about it in detail may be you can PM me your cell number and we can take it further from there.
