    Default Drive Responsibly (And Madly!)

I've been a member of PW, for quite some time now, and have always admired the way the 4x4 enthusiasts on here in particular, have embraced their passion (and displayed it to the world, by means of this terrific site that is known as PakWheels).

What I've also noticed is how we have such a wonderful collection of professionals, businessmen, specialists of their own fields, and a bunch of generally GOOD people, overall. The members of these forums come from a widely diverse background, and encompass almost the entire spectrum of society. Affluent, as well as not-so-affluent. Urban, as well as rural backgrounds. Highly-educated, as well as highly-trained in their own particular skill-set. In short...the works.

We also have a membership of clubs and groups, that is spread across almost the entire country. We have members from the length and breadth of Pakistan...and (personally speaking) I've been fortunate, to encounter new friends on here, from distant places, who I might never have "met", otherwise. We might have nothing in common, save for one thing: a love of the outdoors, and a passion for these wonderful metal beasts we call "ours".

On various trips to some of the most unknown, inhospitable, and ruggedly beautiful areas of the country, one also gets to witness how the members of these clubs interact with one another. The bonding. The cooperation. The coordination. The synchronicity. The humour. The warmth. The friendship and comradeship is clearly visible. As is a sense of "honour" amongst peers.

We're such a diverse bunch of completely-mad, zealously-dedicated, insanely-passionate gear-heads. We spend enormous amounts of money on our machines, JUST to drive them to pieces and lovingly nurture them back to good health. So we can go back, and drive them to pieces, once again!

But...as affluent members of our country (we might not be THE richest individuals out there, but I bet there are untold millions of people who are less fortunate than us)...where's the humanitarian angle to our passion? Are we giving back to society, during our exploits? Are the people around us, benefiting from our skills-set?

This is just a request to all the clubs out there. To incorporate some such angle into their trips and activities, in future. Let our Doctors treat children for free, in medical camps. Let our businessmen adopt a school, or a basic health unit, or an orphanage. If nothing, let us collectively adopt a family...or a child...or a cause. The SOS, for example. Shaukat Khanum. The Edhi Trust. Something. Anything. Let us wear the badge of our HUMANITY, much more proudly than we wear the badge of being Toyota enthusiasts, or Pajero owners, or Jeep riggers.

I'm 45 years old. Pretty much over the hill, I'd say. Personally, I WANT to give back to society, and like all of our community out there, I DO. But individually. We have all the right ingredients (comradeship, mutual respect, passion, affluence) to act as force-multipliers for one another. Let's consistently figure out ways and means to weave a passion for humanity, into our passion for our sport.

This is NOT a sermon. At all. I'm not at all trying to act holier-than-thou, or in any way try to exhibit that I am in any way better than anyone out there. If nothing else...could we please make this a forum where we post the humanitarian activities we undertake in our club trips, and/or individual capacities? We MUST try to outdo one another in the humanitarian aspect. We MUST try to share experiences and efforts and ideas, if and when we're capable of doing so. We spend more money on a "guchcha" for our axles, than it would take, to educate a child for a year in school. THAT, is a sobering thought. One that should possibly spur us to collective activity. Let this not JUST be for when disaster strikes us. Not JUST when earthquakes, or floods, or other calamities befall us. Let it be a part of what we do, EACH and EVERY time we rev up our engines and hit a trail in some obscure, little-known, little-seen area of our beautiful country.

    Let's drive responsibly. And madly!

why do threads like these are almost always ignored on pw and other internet forums?

totally agreed with everything that u said, taking out 1-5% of ones monthly income for such a cause wont change ones standard of living at all but it might increase the standard of living of someone else by ten fold!!! we, as a society, need to think more about this...

being a student, there isnt much i can do but i still am doing something (which i dont want to talk about) and have much better plans to be acted upon onces i get independent... Insha'ALLAH...

That's cause people are impatient, especially on the net. They want quick info and short reads.
They don't want to read much, if only they stayed on to read the next line and then the other and the other and so on.

    Dear Mr. Hafeez,

Lovely post and I agree 100%.

In continuation to this, I would like to offer/know if anyone of you or the readers who own an SUV would like to visit any of the remote areas of Sindh to distribute medicines. I represent a pharmaceutical company, I can arrange free medicines.

    Anyone who's interested, kindly respond.

    Thanks,
    Ali.

A good wake-up call for all of us...Act before it's too late....I bet most, if not all, of us would warm to the thought, it is the follow-up that matters. Why don't various clubs on PW have an internal discussion and than with each other to dish out some workable ideas in this regard? i am certain something good will definately come out as a result of the process.

    Regards,

    How wonderful, Ali Sahab!

I think one of the clubs / groups of like-minded individuals operating in Karachi could be likely candidates for such an activity (more due to geographical proximity, than anything else). And if anyone takes up on the idea, it'd be my pleasure to arrange security and any other assistance / facilitation, through the Rangers for such an event.

    Food for thought!

    Jazak Allah.

    Regards,
That's a very good idea, brother. I think you made an excellent point in especially one line you wrote "act now before its too late". Whilst discussion and consensus is admirable, indeed, I think action far exceeds words.

It would be simplicity in itself, to "weave" such humanitarian activities into EVERY event we undertake. Within each club, I think it could be a fairly simple affair for them to say amongst themselves: "look, guys...we're planning this-or-the-other mud rally / snow-cross / sand-bash / car-show next month. We will need you to bring along so-or-so gear, this amount of petrol, tow-chains, camping equipment, etc. While we will go off-roading for two hours, we will also spend 2 hours in setting up a free medical camp for the locals of the area. Our member Dr XYZ is going to be the resident physician. We need you guys to fork over Rs 1000 each, by means of which we'll purchase medicines for the locals."

The beauty of this is its simplicity...without having to resort to complicated, grandiose plans. And it also has such a wide spectrum of potential activities. We could purchase books for the children of the areas we visit. Perhaps adopt a school there. Or even coordinate things with local charitable organisations / NGOs who operate there. I think it's perfectly conceivable for us to even help in extending the anti-polio drive to far-flung areas that we visit, if we so wish. This list is limited only to the scope of our imagination!

I realise this will place an onus to act on Club presidents and chairmen, and also on its members. But I seriously think that forging consensus within a small group of like-minded individuals, is easier than forging consensus between different groups. Besides...the knowledge of the cultural / local flavour that each Club has in its own specific area...might not be well suited to a Club from a different area.

    Baat Nike wali hai, bhaiyo...

    JUST DO IT.

    Cheers.

Actually, I'm located much further up-country, myself...so a visit to rural Sind isn't really on the cards.

I AM however, planning a little excursion for some friends in the proximity of Kharian (where I currently serve). With regards to the humanitarian angle of such an activity, I'll be discussing a few ideas I have with Aamir Bhai, and some of those very friends I'll be wheelin' with.

    Update you soon!
