Thumbs up IJC - MadMax Day trip from Islamabad to Babusar Top! :)

After last winter’s Lake Saif-ul Malook day trip, when we could not go much beyond Jalkhad, I had been thinking a day trip to Babusar Top.

    <!-- m -->https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/4x4-clu ... ook-beyond<!-- m -->

The opportunity finally landed my way on June 17th last month. Nomi had gone Naran a day before, so I planned to join him for the Sunday trip to the top Of Babusar Top! Suhaib Kiani and little Zaid accompanied me on this madmax trip!

The getting there part was completely un-eventful and as planned. We stopped in main Naran Bazar for our lovely hot breakfast along with much need cups of tea! Than we moved on towards Babusar Top. On the way we caught up with Nomi near Jalkhad, where they were just lazing by the river enjoying the lovely weather n atmosphere.

The drive to the top had gorgeous views as expected. At the top we got off the track, and ascended on the nearbye hill to gain further altitude and get away from the crowd, (a gazillion jeeps with tourists parked by the road side!)

No matter how many times one has been to Babusar, the feeling is amazing as ever. We had our lovely packed lunch at the top followed by chilled mangoes, plums, melons with a view to kill for! We even had a very slight snowfall when we were at the top. As serene as one can imagine!

When it was time to return, we had an unlucky cut on Nomi’s rear tyre deflating it immediately with a loud CHUSSSSSSSSsssssssss! Along with the tyre change, a leak in radiator hose was noted near the overflow bottle. All was dealt with by ourselves, but it did prolong our journey time to Naran. Along the way, we gave lift to several people walking on the road. Finally after a tea break in Naran PTDC, we started our return journey home. The traffic beyond balakot was horrendous, there were long queues of loaded trucks specially close to Mansehra.

It had been a long day, but despite the lack of sleep and prolonged driving stint, there was constant grin on my face……………… for having done it……………………an awesome experience……………….for making it to the Top….our own magnificent Babusar Top!

Many thanks to Suhaib n young Zaid for their lovely company on this very ambitious trip. Lots of thanks to Nomi and his gang for the lovely lunch and river chilled fruit which we had at the top

    A totally awesome experience!

    Brief timeline for our ride

    Left ISB at 5.00am
    Reached Naran 10:10am
    Breakfast break till 11:10am
    Reached Jalkhad at 12:15pm
    Reached Babusar Top 1:30pm
    Left Babusar Top 3:30pm
    Reached naran 6:10pm
    Left Naran 6:40pm
    Reached ISB home 2:15am

Total distance home to home 740km

Till next time enjoy the pics!

Thnx, .................Islamabad to Kalam Day trip is also a great temptation!

Previously have done a 32 hours return trip from ISB to Kalam and back for flood relief around April last year, when the track was in very poor condition and took 5-6 hours from Mingora to Kalam. Desert Devil was travelling with me on the trip!

Firsly I have been there a few time over last few years so know the way pretty well, so no time wasted there. Motorway speed hardly 110kmph. Rest of the roads, speed depended upon condition. We left early (5 am), so were in Abbotabad before 7, and probably mansehra bypass well before 8, so missed most traffic. Being on NPP means high road clearance and so quite possibly the bumpy / broken down road does not slow us down as much as if we were travelling on the car. Overall our pace could be called moderately brisk and no more. No crazy overtaking or speed testing etc. I did similar timings last year as well......both ways, details on top of the page with the link to our other trip thread. And finally we hardly ever stopped, only fuel/ toilet stop at Balakot both ways.

Suhaib may have a different version to tell though!

BTW the return journey timings were not too flattering due to immence traffic.
Thank you for the detailed response.. and they do look flattering to me .. i am quite a lazy driver myself.. you're right i guess the early morning had you avoid quite a traffic jam.. and then again your experience plus the ride made a difference as well.. gr8 trip.. nice pics.. keep up (y)

Sirs great thread and thoroughly enjoyed it...I have a confession to make. Its hard for me to fathom a 5 hour drive from ISB to Naran...I absolutely believe that you did it but what was the trick if you did not overspeed and did not make pit stop?? Thanks

I really don't know what more to add here! As I already mentioned in my previous reply, its traffic avoiding time, no stops and that's about it. One can probably add here that that driving a 4.5Litre petrol powered vehicle (Both NPP n TLC), the overtaking of slower trucks and vehicles was quickly done even in steeper hilly areas so we could maintain a reasonable average speed!

Haha! Those 5 hours to Naran! Guess it took us 7.5 hours to get back although essentially the pace seemed quite similar from what I remember and traffic and nightime driving were the only key differences (Doc obviously does not have the word driver fatique in his vocab, being our "Mad Max"). The Mansehra return stretch was clogged with trucks and probably slowed us down by 30-45 mins. But the rest was definately nighttime driving with significant traffic throughout the route.

That said, on the morning run, I remember NN dropped the NPP in 5th gear once we took the Hasan Abdal turn and thats essentialy where it stayed until we got close to Naran. The NPP would even pick up from below 60kmph in fifth to complete overtakes on inclines comfortably and we maintained a steady pace through the small towns in the morning. The stretch approaching Naran did cause some delays with bad road condition and frequent one way traffic sections....
