    Default Inspecting the Jugaars!

Well there we were, on inspection day we had not registered because we were not sure if we would be able to make it (another long story!). Anyhow, standing next to Barrey Khansahib, I finally got a chance to snap a few shots of the fresh jugaars to the car which were not many or much but were quite intresting....

    Default More tubes, more goodies....

Not all that neat but by far the most practical and hi-tech dash board seen in Cholistan 2013. Goodies seen here include, GoPro freaking black Hero 3, iPad 2 with Awan mount, Fuel pressure guage and secondry fuel pump control, onboard air compressor, fan and horn controls, additional roll cage braces and yes the sexy navigator handle with GPS mount.....

    Default Tires and Rims

It was a hard decision to let go of the BFGs but it had to be done to reduce unsprung weight of the car. Found these cheap second hand Japanese rims with 15x7s and -24 offset as per what it says on them. On tires, ended up with Yokohama 265 / 70 / 15s which were only available in HTs mainly for the 30 inch size (lower gearing and reduced height) and reputed performance on sand. Got some scares with rain and mud but it seemed to work out in the end!

Default Rewind : Concordia Two weeks before the rally!

Did not put the story here earlier, basically around 20th of January we sent the car in the workshop to fix what we thought was a kamani / rear diff alignment issue. It turned out that the frame of the car was slightly bent somewhere near the rear. Now we still are undecided whether it was bent from the start or smehwere during the two rallies the car ran, but it probably was a combo of sorts. Nevertheless, we decided to fic things once and for all by tearing the car down and reconstructing it in record time. Hats off to the Concordia tech team which worked day and night literally to get the car to the start line! In the process we carried out a number of minor enhancements and upgrades which otherwise would just not have come about!

Welcome anytime! Farooq aur Billu ke treat bilkul jaiz hai aur woh log Shinwari ke khaas shaayaqeen hain!

Plans discuss keeyay jaein, zaroor, magar intibah hai ke teer ab kaman se nikal key seenay mein khub chukaa hai! I am afraid sir, there is no turning back, you had a clear choice last year to take either the white pill or the green one! You made a conscious decision on how you want to go about this rally malley business. You have to stick to your guns and work with what you have as you have invested significantly into the Surf venture. As much as I would like to say here that my advice on going for a project car was more practical and as gratifying as it should be for me to see that you probably concur with my views today, the fact is that you made your choice last year and what was good advice yesterday is not necessaily good advice today! So as much as I hate to say this, the 1UZ Hilux has to wait for another day and KC Cruiser must hold its ground for 2014!

In the meantime, for everyone wondering what it is about project cars, or thinking if they should go for a project car, or wanting to convert their perfectly good factory cars to project ones and specially those in the nay on project cars, I qoute Ghani Khan "Ta saa khabar eh, da de mazay na..."

Thori bohot class jaiz hai!! Gari araam se chalai thi, teesri CP tak , phir jab mukesh chawla agay howa to "pathan" kaifiyat tari ho gai... and the rest as they say is history ... finish line do dafa pehlay cross kar di thi ... and in my defense..might i say, our time on the 2nd recce was faster than some peoples rally times ...bohot seekha aur bohot maza ayaa...

what suits you saturday or sunday? Gopro videos are ready to be viewed. Taimur is in Kabul currently (sent there for punishment...for being a bad navigator )...but should be back tomorrow...

Default Ghulam Hussain's Comments on Concordia

8th Cholistan Jeep Rally 2013 Report: Dedicated to the Late Syed Abbas Akbar - filephp?id13868"

Not sure if I said this out earlier, but after the Concordia test drive by Ghulam Hussain Sb late in the evening before the rally he made the following observations.

    - Firstly, I got a sense that he really enjoyed driving the car and he commented that he wanted to throw the car around a bit more for a full test, but knowing that the rally was tomorrow he had restrained.
    - I asked him if the FJ was more difficult to handle than a Jimny, he smiled and commented that the Jimny was like a goat which the local drivers had learnt to control by holding it from its ear. The FJ was much easier to drive and it was perhaps also easier than his Wrangler which had a very light tail and hard to manage the back.
    - On the UZi engine he said that it was as powerful if not more powerful than an Evolution and if driven at full go, let alone us, even he would not be able to control the cars. He did grumble a bit on the kamani suspension, and said that coils would fare somewhat better though he did not emphasize the point.
    - Having owned an FJ40 he particularly commended the efforts of our team in somehow making the suspension soft and responsive. He said that the original car was like a haathi kaa pair (foot of an elephant) as in if it was to jump and land slightly hard it was quite impossible to control. I explained that it was mainly due to the reduced engine weight.

PS: With the FJ on 30 inch tires and short gearing ratios, one of his funny comments was, "jaisey ham apnee zuban mein kehte hain, iss ke gear mein "reisha" bohat hai, reisha aap samajhte hain na"

Shinwari on hai! plan deferred to the weekend of the 23rd tho... while i agree with the "teer, kamaan and seena" business i just noticed that i have a spare teer . A critical evaluation followed our cholistan misadventure... the surf has one big, let me rephrase "HUGE" enemy....weight. As Mukesh Chawla crossed, i said "ok i have a reference now... lemme stick behind this guy"...guess what! i just couldn't... no issues in the power department. The guys rear was hopping on the terrain in true "jimny" style... i had 3 or 4 nasty landings on bumps and consciously decided to drop my pace and wait for the faster section to claw back some time...didnt know what fate had in store for me on that section... mind you i'd fish tailed a couple of kms before the rollover as well... didnt care it was my section to claw back some time

I hate saying this but the surf is a compromise... its a great platform but it cant be a daily driver and a rally vehicle. Its neither a horse nor a donkey... Some points to ponder..

    1. The weight: Needs to be much lower. Simple physics, when a 2.5ton vehicle turns sideways it will take some effort to bring it back. the gopro shows me making a immediate steering correction when it goes sideways... doesnt help one bit. Also what goes up must come down...and 2.5tons coming down is again too much... the gap between qasim and the fastest jimny is around 9mins.. give the jimny a little more grunt and see what happens....heck a handful of jimnys were faster than both 2nd and 3rd cat A cars... theres a limit to the what kind of diet the surf can go on...and it doesnt remain a daily runner post that.

    2. The stance: ....was always a compromise it should have atleast been level... "rear up front down" = asking for trouble (Yes qasim you pointed that out . What i needed was a set of aftermarket upper control arms to correct the castor issue... they're about a 100K and the project account had dried up... so i had to lower the front to fix the castor issue....

    3. The Power: was great! nothing lacking in that department...however considering the overall package and the objective of "finishing in one piece" ... the chip should have maybe come off for the race... (yeah yeah i should have been more conservative on that part )...

Now picture this, the mark iii and iv single cabin daala is only 1.5tons.. remove the daala, the glass, the hood, the cast iron 3L or 5L.. and it probably falls down to a ton or below...put in a 1uz VVti, spring under axle at the rear, vigo rear diff, long travel susp at front and you have a sub 1.5ton toy that can do this...8th Cholistan Jeep Rally 2013 Report Dedicated to the Late Syed Abbas Akbar -11425608th Cholistan Jeep Rally 2013 Report Dedicated to the Late Syed Abbas Akbar -11425618th Cholistan Jeep Rally 2013 Report Dedicated to the Late Syed Abbas Akbar -1142562

btw, 2012 ka bonus aa gaya hai! aur KC bechara "recovery duty" par relegate ho gaya hai!... and oh btw, the Ghani khan bit at the end.... spot on!!! .. za khabar wum, kho khpal "gut" against laram...
    More Power!!! More power....

    Default Random Jimny Facts

    Mehrab Khan : 2nd Position (Cat D 2013) ; 1st Position (Cat C 2012)

If the top Jimny was racing in : Category C it would be first, if its was racing in A it would be 2nd and if in B it would be fourth! It was a track where somehow HP and engine displacement was largely irrelevant and high torque / light weight vehicles fared much better. Mehrab Khan (seen above) owns the particular bragging rights of having overtaken the FJ twice in two consecutive races now. Last year we calculated that when he overtook us 26 mins into Stage II he was going as fast an Evo on that particular stretch. This year we gave way to him somehwere around the last khaabar bit and saw him running up ahead of us for sometime and the man was very precise and impressive in his car control.
