    Dear brothers,

I am searching for a good 4x4 machine. Would like to request the experts here to help me out here.

PURPOSE: Light off-roading + daily runner

MUST HAVES: 5 door + decent fuel economy (anywhere between 8km to 10km is fine)

    MY BUDGET: 1.1 million

Looking forward to some positive responses from the vets.

    Please post replies here.

    Thank you and God bless.

The trouble is that too often there is forty horsepower under the bonnet and one asspower at the wheel

    Let me share my experience

Got an HJ60, 3980 cc, 6 cylinder diesel engine, 400000 kms driven throughout in private use, mostly in original paint, the factors which I considered before buying it was that its an old school vehicle with no sensors and very less hassles, its like a pure mechanical machine, so considering its age she wont let you down anywhere up north by some malfunctioning of its sensors etc.

Parts are readily available from montgomery road lahore and are cheap, did all preventive maintainence from Toyota Ravi motors, put new Yokohama Geolandar AT/S and enjoying the ride.

Its giving superb fuel efficiency of 8 km/l in city and 10 km/l on highway although I was quite frightened by its 3980 cc in the beginning but then read alot of forums on www.ih8mud.com regaridng it usage, reliabilty and running cost.

The most enjoyable thing is that I slept in it by folding its rear seats on my recent camping trip to Rohtas fort, by folding its rear seats you get a 5'-6" x 4'-9" (bed enough for two persons) just lay your sleeping bag and you can sleep anywhere in it provided the weather is good. Its not possible in a three door.

Three door versions looks nice and its really a very well performer in offroading but when you consider its practicality for trips to northern areas it fails due to the reason that it has same engine like five door models with far less space.

Its really rough and tough machine offcourse its has not too much accessories but its like a camper vehicle, you can have plenty of luggage in it.

Whatever the vehicle you go for keep atleast 50 thousand margin for its routine maintainence incl. all oil & filter changes etc.

@samvaid Thank you for sharing the links but I am in need of a 5 door, not 3 door. @jehanzebnasir: HJ/BJ60 are great machines, however, at my age, I need the ride to be a bit more comfy for long routes. The leaf spring shackles will break my back in half

I have explored some options here on PW. So far the Prado seems to be the best fit, however this generation of Prados (mid 90's) have a natural 'jhool' in the suspension which is literally nausiating.

Please keep an eye out and thanks for sharing the info so far.

I searched for Prado 91-95 about two years back and came to know that:

    1. 90-93 models came with 2LTE 2446 cc engine with square shaped dashboard. Price range 8-11. This engine has got in built fault of head crack. You will see that most of the owners of this model change this engine to 1KZTE 2978 cc, which has got enough torque but it is fuel thirsty. But in my opinion only the engine change is not enough unless you change its gearbox and differentials as well.

    2. 94-95 models came with 1KZTE 2978 cc engine with round shaped dashboard and new interior. Price range for a trouble free vehicle could be around 13-15 lacs. A very well maintained 1KZTE can give mileage upto 10km/l on long routes and 7-8km/l in city driving.

    3. The problem while searching for jeeps is that you will find mostly tempered vehicles either body change or book of some other auctioned vehicle etc. try to avoid auctioned vehicles as most of them are tempered or atleast abused.

About the comfort see this thread we did it and enjoyed alot without any problem

And the most amazing thing is that at every fuel pump station my 60 has got the least fuel to fill up although there was a SWB pajero having 4D56.

^Thank you for the feedback. Yes, Prado is no fun without a 1kz.
I have seen this thread and seemed like you all enjoyed a lot.
If HJ60 is a clean one, then I can go for it and the money that I save can go on initial tune ups.

Sir Pajero's are certainly comfortable, but I find their engines not so reliable. I have seen a Prado today, the price tag is a little bit higher than my budget but lets see what happens in negotiation.

    Sir,

Ive personally seen Jeros with more than 300k on clock with sealed and perfect engines.

Choice is yours, to me 2.8Ltr Mitsu motor is more reliable than 2LTE. However, try to find one with 1KZ if you stick to prado.

    Cheers.

great thread! I am also looking to buy a 3 door, as i do not have the space to park a 5 door. I have had the experience of partially owning a few 4x4s like jimny, sierra, mitsu L200, Allhamdoulillah. But this time i am looking to buy a toyota land cruiser.
Prado 91-95 appears to be out of budget, and the 3 doors are rare as compared to 5 doors and priced at around 1.1 million. other option is HJ/BJ 70, but most of them are army auctioned and restored. The last option is LJ71 with 2LTE. It is available for around 800K in good condition and 650K for mediocre condition. but still i havn't yet come across a good rig.
If anyone here knows of good LJ71 in excellent/original condition with proper documents, then kindly let me know.

Don't buy Nissan Safari/Patrol ! It is now a dinosaur from the Land of the Lost very un-comfortable ride & non-practical in daily drive. I love the shape, but in the end its useless. Parts are extinct, if available then very expensive!

Pajero 1 OR 2. Way to GO!!
Parts are available easily. Very comfortable ride on-road & off-road & fulfills all daily requirements with Good MPGs.
    Vehicle History: Pajero 1 & 2 (4d55 Non-Turbo - 4d56 Turbo & 4M40 I-C Turbo) / Land Cruiser BJ60(13B-T Turbo) / Nissan Patrol GQ(Td422 Non-Turbo)

Thank you everyone. I will now digest all this information and make a decision. I believe I will end up with Prado, 1kz engine. @imtishal Thanks for the offer, however I am not interested in double cabin. I hope you find a good buyer soon. @hasan12rana Thanks. I had my eye on your vehicle but I would like to go for Prado. Good luck with your sale.
