The trouble is that too often there is forty horsepower under the bonnet and one asspower at the wheel

@sam the mechanical winch you are looking for is the right solution(in my opinion) coz I don't know hydraulic winches much, but I think that hydraulic winches must be heavier. You have a H55 gear box and I think it has an option to fit a PTO, so go for it. A mechanical winch should not be very hard to find if you have a good connection in Shoba or Shershah. If you are lucky you might find one in RWP as well.

@samvaid: Whats wrong with the winch which is currently installed on your FJ? Is it under power or has some fault?

Thanks, The electrical winch heats up under load, and recomended is that you should use it for a couple of minutes under load & provide cooling period so that the motor does not burn out. Mechanical VS Hydraulic is the key question. They both needs the engine to be started. My thoughts about hydraulic is that it has immense power, look at bull dozers, they have some amazing power being hydraulically operated. So i am inclined towards it. I am working on it and hopefully will find something.

I used to have an electrical winch on my BJ60.
Served me well on all major off-road recoveries.
Often I would have to keep the accelerator pressed while using it, but I never had any technical problems as such.
I think both electrical and mechanical work well.
Dont have any experience with hydraulic winches but I reckon they would be more powerful and reliable than electric.
    4x4 for life!
