As good as that sounds, unfortunately there is no room for any Gods in engineering, unlike mythology or art....

And this rally raid business is a particularly godless sport where kharcha/budget is the key denominator for domination. The french won when they posted big teams, the Japenese dominated until they could afford it and then the German teams came back with big bang bucks. This year's X-Raid team is the biggest team ever at the Dakar with 150 team members and 8 or 9 cars competing.

SK..... When I say Germans are Gods... I always mean they are the Gods of the Engineering world!! Germans do it best and more than half of the world would agree with me on this.
They've got the money and the brains and the X-raid team has been winning... I have tried but I can't see where you are coming from?!!! Yes, anything is possible but its highly unlikely.

They've got Mr. Dakar with them and for this year Al-Attiyah too... again a Dakar champion that too on a German.....so others can give it a shot.... Robby Gordon, that arrogant sense less M*r*n with flip and catch fire in the first five days irrespective of an all new vehicle!!

Dakar seems to be alot like Pk rally scene... others come and go but Magsi is the the champion!

11 times SK, 11 times!!!! ...and he drives German. i agree with Ali, my four banger turbo german puts out more torque than most 6 cylinder jap engines... 2 horse race between peterhansel and al Attiyah.

as much as i would like to see GDV win i still think he is a top 5 kind of guy. El Matador is past his prime... and Gordons much "lighter" hummer will probably have something illegal on it ... am genuinely interested in what show baldwin will put up... chicherit and terranova will as usual be looking at the big guns to DNF

As we speak Gordon is the slowest at WP1 on the first stage... a full 4:28 behind poulter the rookie (somewhat) from SA ... a sign perhaps ... early days tho.

Ahem, Stage 1 and RG has lost it already ... What is most impressive is the two Mebar Dubai entrants, 19 and 31 after stage 1, #342 ahead of GDV by +4 mins..

Yup, interesting day but your missing the relevant point from Day 1 results. A Chinese Haval beat all 11 (yes that is eleven) X-Raid Minis to the finish, Carlos Sousa registering his and Great Wall's first ever Dakar stage win! In the end, as I said its all a game of budgets and the X Raids will stricke back, but hats off to the Chinese team (apparently Mitsubishi power plant in an Isuzu body with Toyota suspension components) for their perseverance and skill in humbling the big German boys with the big pockets.

    The Dakar 2014 - Dakar 2014 stage 1 630x430

Whats unfortunate is that DeVilliers lost 15 mins because of some technical issue (surprising) and all of Chicheret, BJ, Alvarez Chabot and RG are completely out of contention, leaving only El Matador from the top drivers to keep up with the X-Raids. Not a good day for the race overall as no one would really be excited in watching 11 Minis racing each other for 13 days!

    The Dakar 2014 - TERRANOVA SS1130

Robby didn't really matter this year, he has a new car that he was forced to put together in 3 months time. His original plan after selling the two hummers to a Saudi/European team (called MY Racing??) was to drive one of them this year but that fell through and he was forced into making a new car based on his SST platform. The new HST though looked spectacular, had some overheating/vapor lock issues right at the start line and was finally towed to the finish by another competitor.

Default Dakar Engine Choices : Diesel Vs Petrol

    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2014/us/s.../workshop.html

Diesels may be universally considered the best choice to win the Dakar, but the last car makers to throw their hats into the Dakar ring, Toyota and Ford, both fit their cars with petrol engines, a decision guided by reasons other than raw performance, most notably the need to bring down costs.

"I'd have chosen a diesel if I had an unlimited budget", admitted Bernd Wellmann, the engineer behind the Ranger, Ford's new machine for 2014. "3-litre turbo diesels provide a humongous amount of torque, unlike petrol engines, which deliver a much more linear acceleration. This gives them an edge on all types of courses, which is much more decisive than raw performance. On the downside, this tech is extremely delicate and, therefore, fragile. If you want to avoid a breakdown in a race like the Dakar, most importantly you need to change the injectors every two to three stages, which sends operating costs through the roof. Our 5-litre petrol V8, in contrast, is very simple and robust, so if all goes to plan we aren't even going to touch it during the race. Therefore, the decision to go with petrol was mostly a financial one."

Financial in every sense of the word, as explained by Glyn Hall, the Team Principal at Imperial Toyota, which last year finished second with Giniel De Villiers. "True, the rules as they stand now are more biased towards diesels than towards petrol engines, which have a lower inlet restriction, so if I had been given a choice I would have taken a diesel. However, the South African off-road championship is every bit as important to Toyota as the Dakar, as South Africa is the biggest market in the world for pick-ups. But diesels are not allowed in this championship? Our petrol engines are a handicap, which is why we decided to swap them for the best engines in the Toyota range, but we also put a huge amount of work into the chassis and the suspensions to compensate for this disadvantage."

St?phane Peterhansel, the last man to win the Dakar with a petrol engine (2007), now at the wheel of a diesel-equipped Mini, confirmed that drivers also feel the superiority of diesels. "At the beginning, the surprising thing about diesels is that they deliver all of their power straight away, at low revs, and that you need to stay within this low range to make the most of the engine, unlike petrol engines, which you normally keep at very high revs. You've got to get used to it, but it only takes a few hours. The torque of diesels is head and shoulders above that of petrol engines, especially in our sport, where torque is of the utmost importance. This gives them an edge on all sorts of terrains. So, even if the rules change, I'd say that diesels remain the most powerful weapon in rallies." If you can afford them, that is?

You are gonna emphatize with Gordon now... I reckon Dakar is a very important event to participate in, in Gordon's calender.... nothing was forced! And not that he ever did too well his last vehicles!

Good on the Chinese!!! If they had german components may be they would win the whole thing instead of a stage or two.

Actually Dakar is perhaps the least important thing in RG's calendar for this year at least. I have to hand it to him for making the effort every year despite budget limitations and the fact that in recent years he has been unable to afford a support vehicle. Has gone a long way in raising awareness in the US about the Dakar, where most desert racers under-estimate the challenges and miscalculate the requirements given lack of experience. Lets see how the car performs when/if he is able to get it going

thats cause he knows he cant win it... sanity is slowly prevailing... The great wall is crumbling (damn chinese parts!!!) and all 3 german turbos and +700Nm of Torque are coming into their own ... cant see the americans anywhere.

The new IRS V8 Hilux is a freak show! Finished 5 mins down after repeatedly stopping to fix a power steering issue and driving without power steering in the end! Baba Metador finished right on Peter's tail! Minis ain't impressing this year, the competition is on them, they will get away with the numbers and budget, but abhee bohat game baaqee hai
