Default Need help with FJ40 restoration.

    Hi Brothers,

I found this place much convenient for help specially with restorations. I just bought Auctioned FJ40 few weeks ago, and now finally dent/paint job will start from tomorrow onward.

However, 2F is a damn beast, but it's 3 speed and I am concerned about the fuel consumption as well. After speaking to couple of Mechanics, they suggested to replace it with Surf engine, probably 2400CC or 2700CC Petrol. Suggestion?

Me and my mechanic drove 10kms. Engine, gear, 4x4, and suspension is in perfect condition, which obviously I did not expect.

Down the road, I'll keep posting the images.

@kambrit, thanks for the prompt response bro. J series sounds good to me. Its 200 & 220 hp..I will check the price of 1&2jz with prado gear.
Please suggest the tire size, and type. Note that, it'll be driven 70% on, and 30% off road.
I'm looking fwd to end up with something similar to this one. Not sure about the top yet.

Why petrol ? why not diesel ? Something like 3L, 3C or 3CT. I have a FJ too with a 2F engine, although it's a gud engine but it puts a big dent in pocket because of it's 5km/l avg. I believe a diesel will work better.
Qaiser Pal,I have not failed. But found 1 of 10,000 ways which doesn't work.....Toyota driver "I couldn't repair my brakes,so i made my horn louder"..When i was born i was so surprised that i didn't talked to one and half year..since light travel faster then sound, people appear bright until you hear them speak..If u can't convince them, confuse them

I think 16 is what most of the fj40 owners recommend. Also, I thought it's easy to replace leaf springs with coil springs, have to pay huge price for a smooth ride.. but probably its not doable...

Did anyone replace leaf springs with coil springs, only the front?

I agree with you Bro, 2f is a money draining machine...The idea is to replace it with a lower CC but yet higher HP motor. 1 & 2 jz can run up to 8-10 km/L which is fairly fine.

If fuel consumption is the only reason for engine swap than i will suggest a cost/benefit analysis of a 2 km./l gain by about 200k out of pocket cost of engine swap. Not to mention the later issues of differential ratios problem etc.
All above this also consider phenomenal durability of 2F which virtually refuses to die.

    Some food for thought.

In the thread, a coil-spring conversion was mentioned. This is perfectly doable, but it is NOT cheap. And the benefits to be accrued have to be weighed carefully, against costs. The FJ40 will NEVER be a 'comfortable' ride, come what may. It will rattle, squeak, allow the cold to creep in in winters, allow the heat to creep in in summers, and will be hard over bumps and potholes and the like. That being said, I'm doing a coil-spring conversion myself...but for an entirely different set of reasons.

In an SUV, which has a heavy-robust-sturdy frame, heavy diffs, and large tires, 'economy' is a bit of a myth. Try as you might, you will never get an FJ40 to become economical, regardless of the engine you might want to use. The 1JZ and 2JZ are great engines. FOR CARS. Their engineering, their gearing, their power bands, and their performance is geared towards something completely different than an SUV application. Sure, these engines (and the drivetrains) can be suitably modified and tweaked to perform well in various sorts of vehicles...but again, expenditure VS. economy must be suitably assessed. Spending a huge amount of money on an engine (and transmission) swap and all of its allied mods, is going to put a dent in your pocket which the resultant 'economic' fuel average may NOT actually ever recover. As the car owner, if that is justified in your mind...I say go for it.

Regardless, brother...all the very best of luck. (Y)

Keep the 2F. As @akifjanjua suggested that if done properly 2F can return 6 kmpl. Though you can go for a 4 speed transmission if you want.

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas and suggestions and helping me build it. I agree, adding everything at once will probably drain a lot of money from my pockets. After collecting the info, here is the plan I could possibly renovate into reality…
    1. Keep 2F for now since it is in perfect condition
    2. Swap 3 speed with H55 or 4 speed, whichever is cost effective
    3. Army auctioned FJ40’s come with low ratio differential, so either change it or install R17 tires to balance the equation. This will probably control the RPM as well as the fuel ratio.
    4. Keep the leaf-springs as is, and postpone the swapping of coil springs until next season of up gradation
What will be the approximate cost of?
    1. 4 or 5 speed transmission
    2. Higher ratio differentials
Lastly, is someone here from Karachi who is in process of restoration or have done it before? I will probably need a lot of accessories…
