Default Need help with FJ40 restoration.

    Hi Brothers,

I found this place much convenient for help specially with restorations. I just bought Auctioned FJ40 few weeks ago, and now finally dent/paint job will start from tomorrow onward.

However, 2F is a damn beast, but it's 3 speed and I am concerned about the fuel consumption as well. After speaking to couple of Mechanics, they suggested to replace it with Surf engine, probably 2400CC or 2700CC Petrol. Suggestion?

Me and my mechanic drove 10kms. Engine, gear, 4x4, and suspension is in perfect condition, which obviously I did not expect.

Down the road, I'll keep posting the images.

I am a person with very slim knowledge about SUVs/trucks, so forgive me if none of the above make any sense.

I need it for daily practical use not for weekend use as where we live it's kind of 4x4 type area and not safe place on earth as well.
So wanted to have reliable and practical some thing that's why I was going for engine and gear

    Good going.

I am also looking FJ40 restoration and considering city situation going Lyari seems difficult. So, Pakwheelers are requested to share good Restoration workshops location in Karachi, specially, name and location with your personal experience and warnings.

I have learned one thing very hard way i.e. tar(udru) stay away from tar, denter, painter, inspector, head master, collector, Accelerator, Carburetor, Invigilator, Instructor, Radiator, Conductor, Capacitor, Evaluator, Excavator, Terminator.
They all eat-up your time and money.

2jz for a landcruiser.. i would never do it.. try 3B, 1hz, 2h, or 1fz or even 5vzfe.. 1uz will be cheaper.. swap something practical.. fuel economy trust me diesels can give 9-10km max largely depending on right foot.. none of the petrol would cross 8km/l

Toyota 2B, 3B Series Diesel will do 6-7 km/l max.
    Toyota 11B, 13BT, 14B Series Diesel will do 7-8 km/l max.
Toyota 1HD-T, 1HZ Diesel will do 9-10 km/l max. You must have heavy balls to buy 1HD-t and 1HZ.

    For 1UZ-FE (non VVTI) I agree with akifjanjua. i.e. 8 km/l.

you may visit shershah between 11am-04pm. There is a huge market for SUVs restorations, parts, and everything else at golimar. I did go there as of yet, but planning to visit in coming days...

Nope, I won't be driving it much. BTW what is average mileage lets say per 5 KG gas. And how much of power drop in percentage?

Just for fun, I made CNG and LPG conversion on 2F, LGP was 9 Km/l and excellent acceleration and power. We did one off-road trip with LPG an it was wonderful.
Technically, I don't understand CNG/LPG conversion on hardcore 4x4 machine like FJ40, we can do these tricks with Suzuki Potohar for daily use vehicle.
All Overland trips are made on Diesel 4x4 and they are the best and Diesel is available everywhere. period.

I use my FJ as a daily driver and the per Kilometer cost I get is not that bad. Off course 2F is a thirsty lump and the cost of running it daily will be a lot higher as compared to my diesel but still.

I think that if at all you want to go gas, it should be LPG...three reasons for that

    1. It is a Low pressure option as compared to CNG
    2. The weight of the LPG Cylinder(15Kg empty) is one fifth of the CNG cylinder(60Kg empty)
    3. I have heard that the power loss is lot lesson LPG as compared to CNG where your engine looses 25% of its output.

    Default Updates

Just an update, scrapping part is almost half way through. In coming week rest of the work will be done including disassembling of body parts. Still making up my mind for F2 or 2JZ..Fuel is not a huge concern, as far as I am getting around 6KM/L.
Restoration is a pain in the neck. Solute to all who restored it.

Gas & SUV doesn't really sound good together. However, in extreme circumstances where you've to travel 50km a day on F2 then probably LPG is good? Also, do you think 1JZ will push 2.5 tons?
