Default Need help with FJ40 restoration.

    Hi Brothers,

I found this place much convenient for help specially with restorations. I just bought Auctioned FJ40 few weeks ago, and now finally dent/paint job will start from tomorrow onward.

However, 2F is a damn beast, but it's 3 speed and I am concerned about the fuel consumption as well. After speaking to couple of Mechanics, they suggested to replace it with Surf engine, probably 2400CC or 2700CC Petrol. Suggestion?

Me and my mechanic drove 10kms. Engine, gear, 4x4, and suspension is in perfect condition, which obviously I did not expect.

Down the road, I'll keep posting the images.

this will help plenty of members - please share those document in Vehicle documentation / registration thread. by creating a child thread ' auction documents for regn'

    thank you

I am in Karachi at restored one FJ40, it was slow but was doing it to the point. I completely overhauled 2F and at the moment doing an engine run up on it. I did all my work in Lyari and now out of the area for the rest of the work. Works done in Lyari was denting, Engine overhaul, electrical wiring and undercoat for rust protection. Seats were restored in Theen Hatti but now found the best in Guru Mandir area. If you need any help you can call me on my cell # 03212435737 Khalid Khan.

I am restoring another FJ40 which is with the denter and the work is almost completed. Engine is ok but changing it to some high speed fuel economical engine as we in Karachi don't have any off roading activity so decided to swap it with any good petrol or diesel engine.

will ask everyone for a suggestion as I jump to that stage.

Hi Khalid bahi, thanks for the post. I went through with your restoration process, both are coming out well. BTW, do you know Shakil bahi? who owns 2 CJ7s (white & green) and another one with Potohar engine?

BTW, here is what I learnt.

Keep to 2F, Change gear to 5 speed, and change to higher differential ratio. That's it.

I will send you the PM to know the cost of few of the accessories.

    wrangler001 ,

    Salam,

Hold your horses man. You seriously need to decide the "purpose" of this vehicle, ON ROAD OR OFF-ROAD 4x4. If you are willing to have a 4x4 look like machine for show-off, consider 1J, 2J and 1U BUT if you are looking for hard core off-road *** on-road machine you should get stick to 2F or consider Diesel inline 6 cylinder with complete transmission. Inline 6 Diesels 12HT, 1HD-T or 1HZ are expensive but it will give benefit of both.
Please make up your mind first and then decide. If you want to punctuate your life with Adventure, it needs a 4x4 machine.

Talking of Straight sixes you can not ignore 2H.

It is a wonderful machine and will be an easy fit in a Forty....

Engine part is the most confusing. I will be driving in Karachi, and occasionally go out for off-roading, probably once or twice a month. I never used the Diesel engines, so I'll keep away. Here is the list of engines I narrowed down. Please note that as said, it will be driven on-road, and occasionally off-road.

    1. 1JZ (price, availability in Karachi, fuel consumption, works with gear type?)
    2. 2JZ (price, availability in Karachi, fuel consumption, works with gear type?)
    3. 2TR-FE (price, availability in Karachi, fuel consumption, works with gear type?)
    4. 3RZ-FE (chain-driven balance shafts, not sure if it's durable) (price, availability in Karachi, fuel consumption, works with gear type?)
    Anything else with 2500 - 3000 CC 8-10km/L?

I am affraid your target millage will not be achieved with any of these engine in the old cruiser.. smaller engine have a hard time moving the brick on highway speeds

A properly built and tuned 2F can give you upto 6km.. a diesel 3B can give upto 8km.. both are proper engines for the landcruiser

If you are interested in newer generations than 1FZ-FE or 1UZ both will give you 8km max

Also do have a look at gear and axle ratios as well

Here is the simple plan, 2F can be sold to the local electricity generator manufacturers in 50+k if it's in good condition... if this works, I will endup adding another 70 - 80 to get it replaced. Moreover, the registration cost for low CC vehicles are less as compared to the higher CC. I'll probably use fj daily and on long roots as well..

That's what I'm planning to do in the future, but for now, I'll remove the first small leaf out of the group to see if it slightly reduces the tension. I'll do it just for an experiment.

Are you referring to the differential position not being in center?
