Default Newbie to the 4x4 club Prado 1KZ, help appreciated.

    AOA to all members,

A brief introduction to the vehicle and the purpose for which it was purchased ( I will try to keep it short ). I have traveled to the Northern Pakistan with Family a couple of times on rented vehicles, and I always wanted to go there on my own vehicle and By the grace of Almighty Allah, my wish was granted in the form of this purchase. The main reason of this purchase was long trip with Family and Friends.

The vehicle is a 1996 Toyota Prado 1KZ-TE. It took me a while to be able to find this vehicle as I searched for them and looked at dozens of vehicles, but the ones that were this old were mostly abused and not very maintained, since the purpose of the vehicle was to travel with family I could not take a chance with those vehicles in trying to save some money with the purchase but then dealing with issues later on.

The mileage on the vehicle when bought was approx 112k, and the mechanic I showed it to believed it was the original Mileage based on the sound of the Engine and the drive of the vehicle, but when I was looking for this vehicle I had my mind made up that I was not going to trust the odo reading of any vehicle.

This is my first Diesel vehicle and therefore I would rely on the senior members of the forum here to guide me on how to take care of here. Things that I have done since the purchase.

Removed all the unwanted stickers, Got the car undercoated, replaced the Engine Oil (It was very dark at the time of purchase so replaced this immediately and then did it again after 1000 kms), Oil used was Caltex Delo Gold. the diesel filter was changed, the brake pads were replaced, the rims and Tyres were replaced, wheel alignment was done, The ATF was changed, the radiator was drained and coolant replaced.

So without further delay here is the ride

One input I would like from members experienced in Diesel engines or 1KZ in particular, is that the oil seems to get dark very quickly (Unlike petrol engines) , is it normal or is it something I need to look into ?

Congrats on new buy. Oil in diesel engines get dark quickly but this is normal and dont change oil at 1000 km, run for 2500~3000 km with single oil change. Change all filters and always use genuine filters .Check all drive belts too as preventive maintenace.

First of all mabrook on your purchase, MA SHAA ALLAH nice SUV got there..... & A Warm Welcome to the 4x4 family

1KZ-TE hmmm according to my knowledge, its the most rugged motor than 1KD or 2KD! If properly maintained its a joy to drive... parts are cheap & easy to maintain engine.....

Yes its normal in diesel engines, their oil turn black....

If you are using Caltex Delo Gold (Shud be change after 2500 Kms) & plan to remain on it, then you dont need to install genuine filters, you can go for 2nd best option Le PPon, they are good Malaysian filters.

Otherwise my suggestion wud be use Liqui Moly Super Leichtlauf 10w-40 or Cepsa Start Avant 10w-40 (Can be change after 5000-7000 Kms)

    Preventive Measures:
-> Get your inter cooler & throttle body serviced
    -> Timing Belt
-> Change All Oils (Front Diff Oil, Rear Diff Oil (Toyota LSD Oil), Transfer Case Oil)
-> Install Boost Gauge & EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) gauge, A must have for turbo diesel engines....
-> Get Your suspension checked thoroughly

    Thank you!

Yes, I had Initially tried to go for 1KD, but most of the ones I saw(Newer model than this one) had issues with their Engines, Upon some research I found that even though 1KD is a great Engine, it had injector issues and needs good quality diesel to run smoothly, otherwise the Injectors give in easily. I did not take a chance with it, since its going to be used on long routes, there is no way I can tell which station has better quality dielsel.

Thanks, I will stick with Delo Gold.

    On the maintenance.

-> I will get the intercooler and throttle body serviced.
-> Timing belt was replaced by the previous owner (It has a sticker on it that it was replaced at 101k).
-> The differential oils were checked by the mechanic and he said they were in good condition, so I did not change them.
-> I will look into the Guages, do you recommend, turbo timer as well ? since I have been told to let the car idle atleast 30 secs before shutting down the engine ?
-> The suspension was checked and few bad bushes were replaced, the rest was good.

    Nice vehicle there... Masha Allah,
1Kd is better than 1kz. You are rigt about the injectors giving in quickly with high sulphur diesel in Pakistan.
Find a good/reliable mechanic and always go to him. Can advise 2 if you are in Lahore. I own a 2001 prado tx limited with beige iterior.

    Quick question,

I noticed that when starting the car in the morning, it starts up just fine without any issues, it runs just fine, but when I shut it down and want to start it again after a some time (around 30 mins to an hour), the engine is still hot and it takes a lot longer to start now than it did when it was cold, after starting it runs fine again, can any experts help me with this issue ?

    AoA.

Apparently a fuel delivery issue. You may try a few things one by one and see which one solves the issue.

    1. Leave fuel cap half-turn loose, just enough to let the fuel tank suck-in air. Sometimes the breather valves on the fuel cap gives in due to age, dirt or gum built-up.

    2. Replace diesel filter (if its already not done). Has to be original, no compromise.

    3. Ageing / faulty Suction Control Valve on the fuel pump leads to the same symptoms.

I pray & wish there is nothing major that comes after that.

    All the best.

    Kind regards

Thank you for the guidance, I will try the 1st one and share results, 2 has already been done, how do I check number 3? since if it is faulty i could replace it.

The weird part is, there are no symptoms of anything that could be wrong apart from the time it takes to start the car again.
