    Exclamation 1KZ-TE Kash ma Kash

    Crowd Sourcing a solution to a kash ma kash!

    Vehicle:
    1996 Prado SWB
    1KZ-TE
    154,000kms

    Kash ma Kash ? engine overhaul?!
    Should a compression test be done?
    What are the ball park figures that come out from the test that mean one should get the engine over-hauled
    Should one get an over-haul, on the slightest bit of oil seepage &/or smoke or wait till it goes to heavy smoke &/or excessive oil consumption

    I use mine as a daily driver, thus don?t want surprises either side of my journey
    My maintenance is on a 3,000kms or 3 months whichever comes first, basis and its usually the later, where I have clocked about 1400 kms between oil changes.

    Lately, my morning starts were being troublesome, I thought of compression issues, but it turned out that my battery of 2 years, 2 month & 25 days had completed its life. Now that thing is stuck in my head and I cant decide whether I should go for an over-haul or not.

    What say you experts.

    On a turbo diesel like 1KZTE, oil consumption and blue smoke can be a possible turbocharger failure. Inspect the turbo charger first for excessive play and excessive oil in intake... a layer of oil is normal.. however turbo should not be throwing oil in intake.

    If its 154k original miles.. i doubt the compression would fail.. diesels are pretty strong if properly maintained... a compression test would tell the actual condition.

    1KZ is a tough cookie unlikely to die out at just 150ks......
    However given the scenario of buying a second hand car in the land of the pure....
    Meter reversals are kinda viral.....
    Oil consumption....
    Litmus!

    Out here, I recommend running it to the ground before opening it up. If maintenance is proper you could run it for a long time without surprises and even the oil consumption should settle into a predictable pattern.
