My preference is Toyota BJ40. With its height, weight, engine power ratio nothing comes close to it. Even Toyota has admitted that their newer generation FJ Cruiser is not a match with BJ40 (FJ Cruiser was released in US market).

Toyota newer 4th and 5th Generation Surf (what we call them 4Runner, and I do own one) are nothing more then luxury 4x4’s.

I Think Land Cruisers (and oTher toyotas) have the best combination of power, reliablility and Luxury and thats the reason they are widely liked. There might be some old and very uncomfortable jeeps which can climb bit more but then their comfort level is same like a donkey cart, there is no overall performer like LC. No Offence intended for others but its fact.

@Akbar_Khan very nice. You have maintained it very well.
By the way what year is this...and what are specs?
From the pictures, I can't tell whether it is hard or softtop.

I tried to buy Toyota LandCruiser II, 1988 in softop or Toyota BJ40 but didn't find one in good condition at reasonable price. Then I had to run back to US.

Yes its me in second picture. The photos was taken in Naran. and by the way I like your Surf, In how much can I get similar one?

    @issidique

This is a 73 series medium wheel base (1993) with 1 HD-FTE 4.2 L Inine 6 Cyl Turbo Diesel Engine. This model is with an FRP top. It is larger and more powerful than land Cruiser II which have 2L (2.4) engines. Another best thing is that it has power seats, power windows, power mirrors original and we had not done a single modification.

As regards power and performance, this one is much more capable than 5 door Prados because of its power to weight ratio.

and i have not photographed it "Topless" so far.

Akbar Bhai thanks for the information. It is great buy and beautiful truck. My parents recently bought Prado 1997 after I failed to find BJ40 or LandCruiser II while I was in Pakistan for three weeks in March, 2007.

(the arguments of using Prado as a family car has won despite I did my best to get them into buying Landcruiser II so I could use it for hunting).

I am attaching pictures. It is Prado TZ, Automatic. Since we bought two weeks ago, we have changed it with front crystal lights.

    regards,

    @issidique

Congratulations. Its a very nice prado and I agree with your parents regarding it as a better family car. Please tell me how much did u get this one for? I also wish to buy one.

Now coming to BJ40s and LC II, in my opinion BJ40 is a great off roader but then not suitable as a family vehicle. Land Cruiser II (both 5 door and 3 door) are infact earlier generations of Prado which had 2400 cc engines and later it evolved into Prado with 3.0L engine.

Because LC II has a smaller and less powerful engine, I wouldnt recommend it over Prado..........unless one has less budget.

In 3 door type LC73 series is best and it is wider (MWB). it comes in two or three Engines, either 1HD-FTE 4.2L Turbo, 1HZ 4.2 L non-turbo or 13BT 3.4 L Turbo. By the way I would prefer 13BT amongst these because of resonable power and fuel economy.

PS: Because Iam myself working abroad, that jeep sometimes get neglected and isnt pampered as I would like to but still its Ok.
    Thanks

Comparsion of Toyota with others in Pakistan

    Durabilty
Toyota no one else even come closer to it other than Defender

Parts availabilty Cheap parts readily available whatever you choose whether Prado or Landcruiser

Ease of Maintainence You can easily do maintainence from Toyota Dealership as well (personnel experience no hanky phanky)

Looks You have a variety between Landcruiser, Prado and Surf

Comfort Jeeps having coil springs are comfortable as compared to one having leaf springs.

Fuel efficiency 1KZ city 6-7 km/l on long routes keeping it upto 100 it will give 9-10km/l.

A quick comparison could be that most of the pajero and even Landrover are converted to Toyota engines. Really you open the sales section of pakwheels and most of the 1st gen pajeros and landrover defender would be converted to toyota engines.

Landrover could be very powerful in terms of offroading etc. but there is another thing these vehicles are not designed for the quality of fuel we have here.

Even toyota with there new D4D technology is a big failure in pakistan it does not mean that the technology is failure but the reason is that it is not designed for the fuel quality we have.

    Let me share my experience

Got an HJ60, 3980 cc, 6 cylinder diesel engine, 400000 kms driven throughout in private use, mostly in original paint, the factors which I considered before buying it was that its an old school vehicle with no sensors and very less hassles, its like a pure mechanical machine, so considering its age she wont let you down anywhere up north by some malfunctioning of its sensors etc.

Parts are readily available from montgomery road lahore and are cheap, did all preventive maintainence from Toyota Ravi motors, put new Yokohama Geolandar AT/S and enjoying the ride.

Its giving superb fuel efficiency of 8 km/l in city and 10 km/l on highway although Iwas quite frightened by its 3980 cc in the beginning but then read alot of forums on www.ih8mud.com regaridng it usage, reliabilty and running cost.

The most enjoyable thing is that I slept in it by folding its rear seats on my recent camping trip to Rohtas fort, by folding its rear seats you get a 5'-6" x 4'-9" (bed enough for two persons) just lay your sleeping bag and you can sleep anywhere in it provided the weather is good.

Its really rough and tough machine offcourse its has not too much accessories but its like a camper vehicle, you can have plenty of luggage in it.

^^ The failure of LR in Pakistan is 90% due to mechanic ustaad. First they eff up and then try to cover up with silly work.

e.g. ask any mechanic which grease to put into the later type swivel joints of the old RR or early Disco, you can even ask a general mechanic to recommend a grease for the birfield joints in a TLC - and you will 99% of the times hear them say regular grease.
