Most of the new super cars already going for all wheel drive like the lambos. I personally like the audi rs4. awd cars are fast and better handliing but not as much fun as the rear wheel counterparts

As others mentioned, AWD vehicles offer better Stability Control Programs compared to two wheel drive models. Due to this fact, they are more forgiving of driver mistakes in sticky situations. We spend a month or two in Wisconsin during the winter months. Yes, the ground is frozen and the temperature rarely warms up to 0 degrees. We have two Audis there that have Quattro system; the AWD system. The handling on Ice and Snow is absolutely remarkable. I am not saying that you can drive like a maniac under these conditions but you can manage to drive at least at reasonable speed.

4x4 is usually optional, AWD is not. What I mean is that you have the option to disengage 4x4 mode or select Low or High 4x4. The AWD is always all wheel drive. If your vehicle has Stability Control Program, most AWD vehicles do, then the power could be delivered to only one wheel, depending on the situation.

AWD stealing alot power from engine via drivetrain, but return is being good for more grip in curves.

4x4 does not depend on being optional,

prado is all time 4x4, no one says its a awd
suzuki vitara is 4x4 but it does not have a H or L range.

most new 4x4 jeeps are coming with auto power distrubute systems, some can shift upto 100% on front or rear wheels, its not related to AWD,

they R the same thing only interpreted differently
if thrs some technical differance, please provide source.

now people calling "4x4" as offroader and "AWD" as not offroader. basic meaning same thing, just more politically correct way of saying "4 wheel drive".

    @ RedBull_ar:
I did not say ALL 4x4 are optional, I said usually. Let’s break my argument down to basics. A traditional and full 4x4 application offers the user a selection of Low, High and Auto modes. An AWD system is just that; the system can apply power to 1, 2, 3 or 4 wheels. The auto mode in 4x4 applications splits the power fore and aft. It mimics AWD characteristics by applying brakes to wheels experiencing less than optimal traction. The differential setup in 4x4 is usually very different from AWD systems.

The differences are subtle and are not just limited to semantics. In the US, Ford and GM do not mark any of their vehicles 4x4 other than trucks. Chrysler has to protect their Jeep brand from complete annihilation from very good products from other US and foreign competitors. They mark those vehicles with 4x insignia as a marketing ploy. They make other SUVs with the same power train as Jeeps that are not marked at all.

    Here is one link: http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/difference_4WD_awd.html

I am sure you can use any search engine to find 100s of other explanations.

The term 4x4 is normally used for off roaders, ie landcruisers etc. AWD is for cars such as japanese performance machine SKYLINE GTR!!

    i did read ur link

again the assumption is that AWD is the term used for cars and 4wd for jeeps/ofraoders,

and has gone further linking technical differance in car and jeep drivetrains to awd and 4wd.

in the end its the same thing!,

It seems that you have suddenly changed the terms that you are arguing about. 4x4 is not the same as 4w drive. 4w drive is interchangeable with AWD; 4x4 is not. Not all 4x4 vehicles capable of what AWD or 4W systems can do.

I checked the Toyota and Nissan websites. They have 360 degree views of Land Cruisers and Armadas. Neither of the companies marks their SUVs 4x4 or for that matter 4W. It is stated in the specifications that these are 4 Wheel drives not 4x4. I checked the 4x4 Jeep specifications and the stability control that it employs. Their system is not capable of diverting power to less than 2 wheels. As I stated earlier, they use brakes to mimic the capabilities of an AWD or 4W Drive system.

As far as I can understand, from the information disclosed by auto manufacturers, AWD and 4W Drive are the same. 4x4 is a completely different setup.
My opinions, suggestions and thoughts are strictly my own. I reserve the right to be human and make mistakes.
