    Default 4x4 under a budget of 800,000/-

Can anyone please guide me on what options are available in Karachi for a 4x4 within a budget of 800,000/- I shall be using the 4x4 for daily commute, family use, weekend use, and occassional travelling / road trips (either on or offroad hopefully with the 4x4 Offroaders Club). The running cost of the vehicle should be low (diesel). It should have decent drive features. I had a Land Rover Defence 110 in mind, but the box is a bit uncomfortable to drive specially the right elbow clearance on it is very bad. Any advise is highly appreciative. If someone already has a vehicle available with the above features then please contact me at 0300 849 2791. * I am also open to options of developing a 4x4 as a project, as long as the total budget remains the same i.e. 800,000/- , it can be achieved in 4 months time, and the donor vehicle is running and drivable.

    ehalin,
I'm potentially selling my Jimny very passively, I do love that car, its a great little thing however I'm seriously considering an upgrade of sorts,
well I have always loved the Nissan Patrol, the older shape low roof and I'm planning to go for a 3 door, its something I wanted since I was very young, and I think I have owned the Jimny for long enough, made several improvements to it, had a good time, now it's time to get a Patrol since I can now just about afford to maintain one, at the time when I bought the Jimny I needed something with very low maintenance and running costs,
then recently a friend of mine visited me with the old Patrol he was borrowing from a relative, it was a beige coloured one, the lwb low roof and as soon as I saw it I jst remembered the good old days when I would kill to own that car,
I threw my friend out of the car and took it for a spin which turned into a longer spin than anticipated, that 4.2 is really very addictive, I think the Patrol is THE ONE for me ;-)

farazarif, thanks for your reply. I too own a Suzuki Jimny. One of the first vehicles imported by PakSuzuki back in Nov. 2005. I am a 4x4 enthusiast. Earlier I had a Suzuki Potohar bought in 1993 brand new and I sold that car in 2006 when it was driven for 150,000kms. I actually have travelled through all of northern Pakistan. And this was during my university days before the age of digital cameras or internet and recent war like situation in Swat or FATA. With the same idea in mind I bought this Jimny but I forgot that the times have changed and I have other responsibilities from family and work and very recently the deteriorating security. my jimny's mileage now is only 5,000kms. that is after nearly three years. It's a pity. I am hopeful someday I will also get a chance to enjoy my jimny so no plans to sell it now. It's a cute little machine from outside but inside it is a pure thoroughbred unbreakable off roader.

Hey I just saw a 3 door ex-Police Land Cruiser with the 1PZ diesel engine for sale here on Pakwheels, demand was 8.5, a bit ambitious seemed to be in fair condition from the pics which are not too clear. It's been advertised by some showroom.

First option is to buy a very old real 4x4.
    2nd option is to buy the 4 x 1/4 Sportage of 2003 / 2004.

Both Toyota Cami and Daihatsu Terios Kid are useless vehicles off-road while 80% of Sportage owners that I know complain of unique problems with their engines and off road performance.

If you're going for a small jeep go for a real offroader like a Jimny not for a crossover.

If going for a mid sized vehicles I would advise you to go for a 3 door Nissan Patrol , Pajero or LC Prado.

I would also recommend against getting an old jeep which is put together as an amalgamation of chasis, diffs, gearbox and engine of various cars unless you have a LOT of time and patience and the jeep is not your primary mode of transport. Also be prepared for at least 2 swops of every major component i.e. engine, gearbox, suspension etc.

If you want to build your own vehicle and if you are a lay person it's far better to purchase one which has easily available parts in poor condition such as one of those mentioned above and then replace parts rather than starting from scratch and trying to engineer the whole thing.

    Xtrapreneur:
    About the Sportage,
firstly it's resale value really sucks,
then looking at the engines, after around 25,000 km they become very noisy, clunky and smoky, generally poor handling, inadequate ground clearance for offroading, it keeps bottoming out in the centre, as you're not particularly interested in off roading, according to my friends who have owned one, they say its fuel average suddenly drops as the engine becomes a little old, also parts etc are hard to find, poor acceleration wheel bearings keep loosening and suffers from poor reliability. There is a reason why its so cheap while all Jap SUVs are so expensive, even 10-15 year old ones are more expensive than a 5 year old Sportage.
This is just what I have heard, before buying one I would seriously advise you to talk to your mechanic or specific jeep mechanic if you can get hold of one.

    dear xtrapreneur:
sportage resale sucks- true, that is why u can have it for around 700000

    good points:
    1. Oversized boxed frame,
    2. Mazda RF engine, 2.0 l turbo-intercooler (low consumption as compared to 4.0l )
    3. gearbox front and rear diff made by mazda.
    4. Short and narrow wheel base and light weight make it a nimble off roader. When looked after they are a great little 4x4 SUV.
    5. large trunk space with comfortable interior (power windows, power & tilt steering, powerful AC, power locks, vcd player (grand sportage))

    bad points;
    1. front vacuum hubs,
    2. low power-weight ratio, so 1-2 gears on hilly roads
    3. injectors need adjustment after 20000km otherwise u get smoke
4.very expensive kia dealership repairs, go for local mazda workshops where same repairs r very cheap
    5. off-roading? Minimal. The sportage is a commuter SUV and handles freeway conditions well so long as you keep good tires on.

i don't know anything about 4X4,s, but would strongly advise against Adam Zabardast...we got one for our company community department, and it had major problems right from the start...gearbox leaking/faulty, went back to dealership for repairs, but again had same problem.

Last i heard, they sold only 150 units and then stopped production!
