TOKYO — Anyone who has ever used their Tonka truck to dig a ditch in the sandbox is sure to be intrigued by the Daihatsu Mud Master-C, which makes its debut later this month at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show.
Daihatsu, the mini-vehicle specialist affiliate of Toyota, punctuates the Mud Master-C (the C stands for concept) with large gullwing doors on three sides. The massive doors are less for looks and more for practicality in that they are "ideal for loading and unloading bicycles," says the automaker. The mountain-bike-support model of the concept was designed in collaboration with Raita Suzuki, a professional cyclist.
The Mud Master-C can be configured in a number of ways for outdoor work and outdoor play. The body uses lightweight body-on-frame construction. The cabin gets a large LCD multi-display and water-repellent seats. The Daihatsu concept rides on 16-inch off-road tires and uses a hub reduction system that transfers power to the wheels through gears between the driveshaft and wheel hub.
