    Default DEFENDER Questions ??

Can any of the Pak Wheelers who own or have owned Defenders give me some help & info please...esp Shani,Storm and Sajidd.

1.Are Defenders expensive to mantain like parts, filters etc.

2.Build quality of Pak assembeled vehicles because I have heard that the rivets come loose after some time & there is a lot of rattle in these cars.

3.Comfort in tarmac driving especially long distance travel and city driving comparisons.
    4.Fuel averages.

5.Lastly I am getting a 2005 defender 110 done 80000 kms a bit rough used but otherwise sound in 1250000 how is the deal considering I would like to keep it for good probably & use it as a family car.

    @Asadjhangir khan,
We are using defender for the last ten years.currently its a 2005 model.
Following are the Ans to your questions after experince of ten years of Land Rover:

Q-1.Are Defenders expensive to mantain like parts, filters etc.
Ans-1 Yes Defenders are expensive to maintan like parts & runing maintenance
Q-2.Build quality of Pak assembeled vehicles because I have heard that the rivets come loose after some time & there is a lot of rattle in these cars.
Ans-2 Build quality of Pak made defenders(by sigma) are not that gud as the UK models are but not bad either to have one.Its cheaper than Land Cruiser & other competators.
Q3.Comfort in tarmac driving especially long distance travel and city driving comparisons.
Q-4Yes u r right.Land Rover defender is bumpy, not comfertable with stock seats. If u will replace the stock seats.Landy is ok..but still little bumpy..but very gud offroader
Q-5 Lastly I am getting a 2005 defender 110 done 80000 kms a bit rough used but otherwise sound in 1250000 how is the deal considering I would like to keep it for good probably & use it as a family car.
Ans-5 Yes price tag is ok aga the model. Its all the condition.
Three strong recomendations to go for a Land Rover.
Its a big SUV/4x4 & tremendous offroad capability.Slightly under powered but with few modifications one cana manage that. Its cheap to buy a ten seater 4x4. And the last reason to go fo Land Rover it can go every where.Means Hard core 4x4 terrains where Land Cruisers & Pajeros cant..I think if u will make some few modifications to 110 Defender...It will never let u down on ant terrain...
Land Rover One Life Live & Go for it

@Offroad I was looking at the Junior offroaders when you were probably replying in detail to my questions (the pics you put up) MashAllah and congratulations on the new addition.
Thanks for taking the time out & replying in such detail to my queries they have indeed answered a lot of questions...but do tell me about the 300 Tdi engine life how much more can it go till it opens if properly serviced this one already has 80000kms on it I know this question depends on the previous maintenance also , but I am talking in averages here?
(The Hingol Park thread is one of my personal favorites ever since I discovered PW as I am relatively new here.)

In this country you should buy only Toyota, even if its 20 years old.

I spent a ton of money on my Defender but hardly got anything back. And the money I spent was just to make it driveable for every day use..

So take your 12 lakh, add another 2 or 3, and buy a toyota land cruiser or a surf..

Unfortunately I sold mine just few weeks ago, else you could have gotten ready to go Defender in great condition and loads of extras..

@Sajidd sir thanks for the input I'm in luck tonight attracting the gurus..,from your reply it seems that it was a great dissapointment for you resale value wise but how was it otherwise I read in one of your posts that you were selling it because it was a bit cumbersome in rallying.
Resale is not what I have in mind here seriously I know I may never even find a buyer for it.

If your mind is set then go for it.
Mine had just 45,000kilometers on it and had the following:

    ARB SHOCKS AND SPRINGS
    RANCHO SECONDRY SHOCKS
    CUSTOM INTERIOR
    DOORS THAT OPENED WIDER
    LARGER INTERCOOLER FOR MORE SPEED
    EXTERIOR LIGHTS
    SPARE FILTERS
    SPARE RIM
    SPARE FRONT GRILL
    SPARE BELTS..

ALL THIS FOR ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR YOUURS, SO I THINK THE PRICE SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN RS10 LAKH.

IT WAS A GREAT CAR, GAVE ME TONS OF FUN BUT SOME GRIEF TOO. THE ELECTRICAL IS SCREWED UP. THE BATTERY UNDER THE SEAT IS A PAIN.

I HAVE DRIVEN TOYOTA PRADOS AND LAND CRUISERS AND THINK THAT THEY ARE EQUALLY CAPABLE AS FAR AS OFF ROADING IS CONCERNED.

I AM ACTUALLY THINKING OF BUYING A 1996 LAND CRUISER WHICH IN MY OPINION IS A GRAND DADDY OF ALL OFF ROADERS, EVEN THE DEFENDER..(-:

@Sajidd you had some good modifications esp the suspension ,done to it sir & the mileage was low as well wish I had stumbled on to Pak Wheels earlier.
You have though succeded in giving me second thoughts about the price.
I dug up your earlier posts and saw the pictures of the modifications you did though it is a shame to see all the hard work go away so easily.

Off Road, much depends on the driver as well.. wont you agree..? Yes the Defender will go thru just about anything, but so will the Vego, 1996/97 Prado or the Land Cruiser. Inshallah I shall prove this to you...very soon (-: as soon as i get my hands on the 1996 Land Cruiser that I have been targeting.

Then will go to hingol and send you pictures from there ! how about that?

    Also Offroad,

I have seen Toyota's perform remarkably well in rallys, where conditions are much worse than Hingol. Its another matter that 9 out of 10 winners are Toyota, and thats becuase most drivers are driving Toyotas but then thats becuase Toyota's are very capable, thats why they are the choice of many rally drivers here in Pak.

    Watch this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ_60PpxSzI

    read this:

In 2007, Top Gear ran a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a customized 2005 model Hilux to the magnetic north pole from Northern Canada against Richard Hammond using a dog sled. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, made the truck the first car to make it to the magnetic North Pole. Clarkson in this episode also informed May that he would be the first person to travel to the North Pole who had no particular desire to be there.

Let me put it this way..

Defender will keep its driver involved..
    Toyota will let you relax.

Having said all this, i will not mind buying a nice defender 90 soft top, not because its capable, but because there is a whole romance to having a defender 90 soft top..its a life style kind of a thing....

@Sajidd , @Offroad :-) seems like I've started a Defender..Toyota war here much like the corolla civic ones here.
I do agree it does depend a lot on the driver I have many times witnessed two vehicles with the same spec on the same terrain performing poles apart .. my personal experience with 4wds in more limited to snow driving than to pure off road & by snow I mean upto 2 feet and more of snow. Surprisingly I've seen suzukis doing very well there & then there is the Rocky & th BJ's which are very hard to beat as well

People like toyota when they got stuck due to Land Rover's Electrical fuel pump or when electrician ask them "Sir Battery nahi mil rahi". Its better to go for a Japense vehicle. Far more reliable. A friend lost the fuel cap of his 130 and that alone costed nearly the amount of money in which one can buy a used fuel pump of 1 KZ. I can only sympathize with 8 people in Landy.

@AsadJahangirKhan, Land Rover is a pain as far as 2nd row seating is concerned. Your family will hate you for this matter, its even worse then a bus for a person above 5 ft.

@Sajid Bhai, So you are going for the infamous "Cruising"

Let me put it this way,

Toyota is reliable, comfortable and durable
Defender is durable, durable and only durable.

Buy a Toyota if you want to use it for family use as well, else be prepared to spend a bundle on the interior and the suspension. Better yet, find the one i just sold and buy it, its ready for family use.

And bhai, Offroad and i have no arguement, in the end we all like the same thing, enjoying the great out doors in our off roaders..

Like i wrote earlier, i may even buy a defender 90 soft top down the line, just because its fun to drive although its a pain to keep.
