    Default Coupling 3c engine with original gear (M38A1)

    Hi guyz,

    Need ur help regarding the coupling of 3c engine wih the orignal gear of m38a1. Are they compatible and what are the pros and cons of the said combination.

    Infact I was going for the restoration of orignal petrol engine but didint work out as the engine block wasn't restorable. now im a little short of funds and want to know abt the saib combination as i cant afford to buy 4x4 gear of ssr or rocky.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I think its workable. An adaptor plate will be fabricated and thats it.

    well i think the original gear box is designed for the petrol engine i.e. higher revs and different torque curve, though the diesel engine will work but the jeep wont be able to attain its maximum off road capability.
    its all about power to weight ratio...

    Adapter plate is not an issue to fabricate.
    As far as the engine to transmission ratio is concerned it is not a big issue. 3C is a relatively high rev engine and it redlines around 5100 rpm. I am sure the original Willys M38A1 engine will peak at around the same level. Only problem is the speed. Another thing 3C is a powerful engine, and it is not meant for a hardcore offroader like M38A1, it is basically designed to run on roads. So an engine which revs higher and delivers peak performance at a very high rev range like 3C, the genuine Gear box & axles might not be able to cope wid it. So it is advised that U go for a hilux gear box and rocky diffs and axles.
    Take care

    Petrol engines on these jeeps produce torque at low end much like diesels. It wont be that big a problem.

    3c is cheaper. 2c has less power. I think you should go for 3c without turbo

    In my opinion, 3c or 2c coupled with orginal 3 speed tranny and diffs, you will get very good offroad performance but limitations in top speed on highways.

    go for it i had used 2c turbo with stock M38A1 gear trainy power was perfect for serious off road, coupling was simple with single plate only problem was power steering pully hits front tube when off roading top speed was 75km but heating is a problem s such speeds because of engine load up fuel con. was excellent 14km/liter

    @laiqalih

    Sir, Thanx a lot for sharing ur experience here. 70-75km is good enough for me as the jeep will be used mostly for offroad. The fuel consumption is really great. I'll not be going for Power steering so may be i will remove the pulley

    @azkhan sorry I read your mail today. I think answer to all your questions in the mail is now 3CT. We have it installed in KMB's MB and has turned into a beast. 3CT with this gearbox will give you a top speed of 120kmph but at a very high rev so runs fine at 80-100 kmph. Coupling is no problem as Spectra has mentioned. SO GO FOR IT! Original axels are strong but the brakes are weak. Original gearbox has an extreme offroading capability whereas the Rocky gearbox is very bad at extreme. Afterwards whenever your budget allows replace it with SSR gearbox and axels. Or you can use Suzuki Potohar/Jimny axels. Its a very fine combination for m38A1.
    To all the extreme drivers, please come offroad like ME to keep others safe on the roads.

    Just read this mail. I have this configuration in my MB. 3ct with the old 3 speed gear box. As Jeepaholic explained this is very good offroad combination. But on the highway you will not get top speed that the 3ct can give.
