Default IJC Snow Cross Country on 18 th Jan 2009.

    Dear all

I have a plan/suggestion for extreme winters..... if someone is interested then we can proceed.

During snow seasons we will travel from Islamabad-Muree-Nathiagalli-kalabagh-Abbotabad-Islamabad, when road is normally closed for trafic....

    SNOW CROSS COUNTRY
There is nothing extra we have to do for traveling on snow (especially snow on paved roads), it is even more easy to travel on snow except if it not chock your whole front radiator grill while moving on 2~3 feet soft snow. The only difficult part is driving on ICE (there we need snow chains).

We should have snow chains (but not compulsory) we will put those 4x4 vehicles without snow chains in between the convoy so that if it skids on ICE and hit other vehicles that should be friendly hit (like we have on 5th Oct).

Another important thing is proper warm clothing and extra food for another day (although we have one day trip) and preparedness to stay in snow if something unforeseen happened (which will inshahallah not happened) like few years back due to traffic jam near Murree, people spend night in their vehicles. I myself spend that night inside the vehicle by choice in Murree (Mall road, photos attached on the beginning of this thread). Its better to have sleeping bags and blankets in case of emergency.

    GEAR/ EQUIPMENT
The other gear/ equipment that are required not for every participant but at least required quantity will be available, so few friends can volunteer. There are some compulsory gears that every one should have is mentioned here.

    Personal Gear:
    - Jacket
    - Boots with extra dry socks (It’s better to put shoppers over your socks before putting feet inside shoes)
    - A couple pair of gloves/ mittens
    - Winter hats/ ski caps/scarf
    - Blankets/ Sleeping bag
    - Drinking water (which will be used for vehicle too)
    - Swiss knife
    - A headlamp/ Torch
    - Extra batteries for everything that takes batteries
    - All this fits in one medium-sized bag,
.......and whatever else it occurs to you to throw in the jeep.

    Vehicle Gear/Tools:
    - Snow chains
    - Snow shovel
    - Jumper cables
    - Toe chains/ strap
    - Jerry Can 20L (diesel/ petrol)
    - Hi-Lift Jack (doubles as hand winch w/ attachment)
    - Necessary tools/ hose pipe/ fan belts/ steel wires
    - Small Gas cylinder/ camp stove & fuel
    - Binocular or Monocular
    - First Aid kit

Then again, people in the area will come and help us, if we get stuck (but we had experience good teamwork on our 14 august event).

If chief is ready.... that means it is feasible..:d I'm excited.

Normally it is 5~6 hour drive, but when blocked with snow, I think we must spair 1 extra day, if anybody stucked.

I agree we must prepared for the events and snow chains comes 1st in our check list. It requires some other necessary equipments like clothing for sub-zero temperature and tents sub-zero sleeping bags, extra food and fuel. Snow chains, toe chains, shovel, etc. etc.

Thanks for joining and taking interest, maybe we can finish this track in 1 day but for extreme thrill, it is requested to have time cushion, especially in those conditions.

If we stucked (due to road blockage) then we will take U-turn and back to Islamabad on the same track.

...but going Murree only and back during snow seasons doesn’t need a 4x4, the snow removing machines will make Murree road accessible in winters. This option is OK, but I’m asking more...

...but we can go together and people have two options (after enjoying snow at Murree) either continue Nathiagalli-kalabagh-Abbotabad-Islamabad OR back, Murree-Islamabad.

... I/we’ll certainly attempt this track with at-least one IJC vehicle/member inshahallah.

    THE PLAN

On any Saturday (or early Sunday) when heavy snow covers all roads, and road is closed for normal traffic, then members of IJC will travel from Islamabad-Muree-Nathiagalli-kalabagh-Abbotabad-Islamabad.
The plan will be finalized after discussion (IJC/ Pakwheel members) within this or any of the active thread of IJC/ Pakwheels websites

I've been pondering and wondered what sort of emergency winter travel kit, the "well-prepared" stuff we should carry on our vehicles. Besides the fuel, food, water. Although we need few items from following list but for preparedness we should have everything that might help us during this trip/travel.

It's not that hard to throw a bunch of this in your trunk and leave it there, and a lot of us probably own much of this stuff anyway.

    Personal Gear:
    ~ Jacket*
    ~ Fleece shirt/ Sweater
    ~ Fleece pants/under pant
~ Boots with extra dry socks (It’s better to put shoppers over your socks before putting your feet inside shoes)
    ~ A couple pair of gloves/ mittens*
    ~ Winter hats/ ski caps/scarf *
~ Blankets*, god forbidden if we stucked and have to spend night in vehicles (although we did this once for thrill, but it was happened in Murree few years back people spend a night in their cars due to traffic jams/rush)
~ Drinking water (which will be used for vehicle too)
    ~ Swiss knife
    ~ A headlamp/ Torch
~ Extra batteries for everything that takes batteries
~ All this fits in one medium-sized bag,

........and whatever else it occurs to you to throw in the jeep.
