Default IJC Snow Cross Country on 18 th Jan 2009.

    Dear all

I have a plan/suggestion for extreme winters..... if someone is interested then we can proceed.

During snow seasons we will travel from Islamabad-Muree-Nathiagalli-kalabagh-Abbotabad-Islamabad, when road is normally closed for trafic....

    SNOW CROSS COUNTRY
There is nothing extra we have to do for traveling on snow (especially snow on paved roads), it is even more easy to travel on snow except if it not chock your whole front radiator grill while moving on 2~3 feet soft snow. The only difficult part is driving on ICE (there we need snow chains).

We should have snow chains (but not compulsory) we will put those 4x4 vehicles without snow chains in between the convoy so that if it skids on ICE and hit other vehicles that should be friendly hit (like we have on 5th Oct).

Another important thing is proper warm clothing and extra food for another day (although we have one day trip) and preparedness to stay in snow if something unforeseen happened (which will inshahallah not happened) like few years back due to traffic jam near Murree, people spend night in their vehicles. I myself spend that night inside the vehicle by choice in Murree (Mall road, photos attached on the beginning of this thread). Its better to have sleeping bags and blankets in case of emergency.

    GEAR/ EQUIPMENT
The other gear/ equipment that are required not for every participant but at least required quantity will be available, so few friends can volunteer. There are some compulsory gears that every one should have is mentioned here.

    Personal Gear:
    - Jacket
    - Boots with extra dry socks (It’s better to put shoppers over your socks before putting feet inside shoes)
    - A couple pair of gloves/ mittens
    - Winter hats/ ski caps/scarf
    - Blankets/ Sleeping bag
    - Drinking water (which will be used for vehicle too)
    - Swiss knife
    - A headlamp/ Torch
    - Extra batteries for everything that takes batteries
    - All this fits in one medium-sized bag,
.......and whatever else it occurs to you to throw in the jeep.

    Vehicle Gear/Tools:
    - Snow chains
    - Snow shovel
    - Jumper cables
    - Toe chains/ strap
    - Jerry Can 20L (diesel/ petrol)
    - Hi-Lift Jack (doubles as hand winch w/ attachment)
    - Necessary tools/ hose pipe/ fan belts/ steel wires
    - Small Gas cylinder/ camp stove & fuel
    - Binocular or Monocular
    - First Aid kit

Then again, people in the area will come and help us, if we get stuck (but we had experience good teamwork on our 14 august event).

this is VERY tempting, since my soft-roader can also take part. onbly thing is that i don't have ANY of that vehicle gear with me. will check availability/schedule and let you know soon.

just to confirm, this is still a day trip right?

    @ All (IJC)

    Some Tips,

Before heading out, check the weather and traffic for your rout.

Keep an emergency road kit in your car.

Check your tires for proper inflation and for even tread wear. Tires should be rotated

keep traction devices (chains or studded tires). Know how to install these beforehand. Chains should be installed on the drive wheels, while studded tires.

Examine all belts and hoses to make sure there are no cracks or leaks.

Turn on your headlights as soon as you start driving. This allows other drivers to better see you.

Keep a greater-than-normal distance from the vehicle ahead of you to compensate for poor braking conditions.

keep a bag of sand in the back of your vehicle. Not only does this provide better traction while driving, but you also can use it for traction under spinning tires.

Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow.

And ofcourse some food, water, stove coffee warm blankets, and extra clothing:d

This is what everyone should have for snow and ice. Be careful anyway.

Snow chains mounted on front axle with 4WD/AWD.

Good acceleration, good steering, good braking. However, since the rear wheels have no lateral guidance, the rear end might come around - fast. Not good. Feather your brakes.

Snow chains mounted on rear axle with 4WD/AWD.

Good acceleration, lousy steering (no lateral guidance), marginal braking (remember, 80% of brake force is created at front wheels and without chains that ain't happening). No fishtailing. Best compromise for 4WD with only one pair of chains.

@untame buddy we'll finalized this on Sunday, 11th Jan's event. I have a plan and already discussed with Aamir Bhai to take some snacks (for travel, our convey will take more than usual time to reach Nathiagali).
We can't spend more time in snow (specially for cooking food) we'll take reasonable/nice n warm restaurant for food so that we can chill out.

    @SRS
Thanks for such nice comments and information with snaps shots....

For trafic jams (around murree) we can only wish, and we will cross Murree in early morning (during our return we can get info and proceed accordingly - and use alternate route via Abbottabad).

Actually we have some pairs chains, not for every ride but those without chains will be placed in between the convey.

Two chains per ride is enough usually it come in pairs and put on drive wheels, for 4x4 no need of putting on all wheels 2 can solve (some advice and practice on cross wheels)

    @ ihaq
Sir my pleasure,as i my self is big enthusiast of adventures.

    Only thing please remember that

Almost every time in snows the first accidents happens involve SUVs. Most SUV drivers think just because they have a big off-road capable vehicle they are invincible when the weather gets bad. What they don't realize is once they get moving on road all that weight and high center of gravity is a lot harder to control.:d

Light Snow + Curve + SUV=Funny Pictures for Me! :p

    @aamir567

Sir thanks for invitation, definitly will join you soon InshaAllah:d

I really wanted to join you guys for the event but unfortunately I will not be able to make it since my son is getting married the 23rd of January. I decided this date as one of my cousin is leaving Pakistan on 25th, and wont be coming back anytime before five years. Initially it was planned in mid of March.

Will really miss the IJC event.
