Default A Love Story Land Cruiser BJ74

I've had a few people show some interest in recent project, a Land Cruiser BJ74 as a result of which I have decided to take you on a pictorial tour.

It all started when I was around 14 or 15 years old. I saw General Muhammed Zia-ul-Haq's motorcade whizz by a number of times and I was crazy about the BJs in his entourage and always thought to myself that one day I'll get one of those.

A year or so later, a friends cousin acquired a BJ, the right car in the right colour and at that time I offered him my total life savings of two thousand five hundred rupees which he graciously refused.

Over 10 to 12 years later, I was looking for a car and suddenly remembered that car. I traced the guy down after much difficulty only to find he had moved from Pakistan and my hopes were once again shattered. I then discovered that he did however still own the car but it hadn't been driven for a while. I then traced him to Dubai and made a deal with him without looking at the car over the phone just on his word that the car was good.... It wasn't. Actually it wasn't bad at all but not quite as well as I wanted.

Overwhelmed with emotions, I still proceeded to purchase the vehicle...

This is the first time I saw the car after almost 12 years when I went to collect it.

Amazing thread, and beautifully written! All that information blended with the humour made it such an interesting read.
I havent been posting on Pakwheels for such a long time now. I visit it every now and then but the boring and repetitive threads really turn me off and I end up clicking the little red cross on the top right of the screen in very little time.
Anyway, I have to say Faraz bhai, your love story forced me to login and write this little note of appreciation.
RX-7? An RX-7? Really? I hope you know it's just a sports car with a washing machine under the hood.

Every thing is well if the end is well.
to add to ur knowledge about new top of lc , my friend had same fibertop 1988 land cruiser and he placed just like new top from frontier in 3.5 lacs.He was very happy, but he had to sold as those stupids grinded the new L.C chassis number and matched it with his and sold his genuine car to some one else. But if they wouldent have changed the chasis number and placed the new body on his orignal chasis the car was a gift.
So if u go for this stuff do stand there dont give them the car, get the body change infront of u.
The same affair i had with my civic 1993 i made it like new , but now i am selling it, as i used it for drags and the h22 in itneeds some internals so, selling it again with b16 and ending my affair as, bought the car for 5.75lacs and spent seven lacs on it, But sadly its pakistan not even mechanic white colored people r sitting to cheat u and rip of ur money. As my pockets r emoty for time being i have discarded the project.
Now selling the car for 4.5 lacs with orignal engine.
I learnt a lot about friends and foes in all this process.
    So best of luck again.

    Guys,

I had to face some serious problems today because of you,
all your praise has given me such a big head that I couldn't get it through the office door this morning,
First it got stuck in the elevator and then I had to tilt it sideways to get in to the office,

Seriously guys, thanks to every single one of you, I wish I could name each of you and thank you individually,

I just wanted to say to a friend here, grinding down an original chasis number and stamping on another one is changing the identity of the vehicle and is illegal, please be careful,

It's not just in Pakistan but all over the world that people / mechanics / white collared people will cheat and screw you over, I have learned to accept the fact that I will get cheated, sometimes I get cheated knowing what's happening coz I know the next time I can get the guy by the balls and use his previous cheat to my advantage. During the course of this project, I was cheated countless times, a few times I let it happen as a part of my grand scheme of things, at times I just simply got screwed over, sometimes being cheated and screwed also adds to the spice of the whole restoration process, and sometimes we behave with such naivety that only an idiot wouldn't take advantage of us,

I would advise you guys to be careful of the following:

Always confirm prices from at least 3 shops / scrap merchants what ever before you buy ANYTHING, even a little nut and bolt.

Know what each part of your vehicle is supposed to look like, if you need to buy an alternator, simply knowing your engine name / part number etc is not sufficient, download pics off google, study them in detail prior to going to your scrap dealer / part supplier.

Buy from reputable shops or those recommended by friends.

Use only reputable tradesmen to work on your car, even if you have to pay a small premium, it's worth while in the long run and remember you are not an electrician or a mechanic, know your limitations, gain enough knowledge to have a meaningful discussion on the best course of action but don't think you know better, these guys who've been doing it for years and understand every aspect of the trade without any formal education or qualifications are genius in their own way and one should respect that genius.

Often things don't go right on the first time and need some tweaking / adjustment etc before they're perfect.

Come to accept it, cheating takes please everywhere, it's not unique to Pakistan, at least here it's your own people who're cheating and benefiting out of your misfortune, the kind of ways that people cheat in foreign countries is far worse, here at least they usually show some heart, abroad they'd cheat you till you're left with just a vest on your shoulders and then too they'll take another few attempts.

On the bright side, a car never dies in Pakistan, anything can be salvaged no matter what condition it's in, here we have a bunch of tradesmen who're so damn smart they can fix just about anything, alter just about anything and often make almost anything, and what do they charge for it, peanuts, if we get half the work we get done on our cars in Pak abroad the mechanic will have us over a barrel have a great time and then call his budding to join in too!

Moving on, to the test phase,

having kidnapped my friend I thought the vehicle needs to be tested in a unique and treacherous location, frought with danger, magical lands and strange creatures,

so off we went, we passed a check point set up by gnomes in dark grey shirts and khaki trousers, we then drove passed several cars being driven by freakish beasts with fairies in the passenger seats and finally arrived at our destination.

After looking for safe passage, we descended into the belly of the enchanting land of Phase VIII,

I smiled at my car, lovingly stroked it's dash and said, are you ready, I looked over to my friend, he was sitting next to me, holding his head and swearing at me... "you said we're going to get some movies and will get back in 15 minutes, you lied to me blaa blaa blaa..." fortunately, my medical impairment meant I couldn't hear anything, I told him, Shutup *****,

your mouth is moving, but all I can hear is thanks for bringing me here and giving me the opportunity to be part of this great moment... he chose to shutup.

I selected the Superman theme track, breathed deeply, moved my head from side to side, stretched, cranked up the stereo, freed my hubs, engaged 4H and off we went...

The vehicle Maashallah performed spectacularly better than my modest expectations.
