    Default Land Cruiser 1991- Soft Top

    Dear All,

    These are the photograps of a 1991 land Crusier, Soft Top, Police auction, which i am interested to acquire. The asking price is Five lak seventy five thousand (Rs. 575,000) and i believe that the same shall be sold for five laks forty or so. The vehile has a 3L engine (which is still working) and does not have any major accident. The body is good but the interior the dash board will certainly be required to be changed.

    Although i am a fan of soft top vehicles and owned a suzuki soft top a few years ago, i have no experience of restoring a vehicle like this. Please advice me on the following:

    1. The Price i believe is very high, what should be the reasonable price of this vehicle;
    2. If i get this restored, what would be the approximate cost and where should i get it done, i am based in Lahore;
    3. What is the possibility of swapping the body with an imported 1991 vehicle. I realize that i would be very difficult to obtain an imported soft top but still if i go for a hard top how much would that cost and how safe is that;
    4. What are the legal implications of swapping body where the shape remains the same?

    I look forward to your valuable comments. Thanks

    Buy it.

    The possibilities are endless.. with this vehicile..
    No legal implications of a swap.
    I am not sure how much it will cost, but it should
    not cost a bundle.

    Put in a 1kz engine.. or even the new D4D.. then this puppy will fly..

    I have one with 1kz engine.. Love it.

    A few months ago, a 1985 soft top Land Cruiser was auctioned in Lahore by Atomic Energy for 4 lacs, in somewhat similar condition. It had all token paid till July 2009. Therefore, I think 540,000 approx is reasonable.

    From the look of it, the vehicle seems to require complete restoration, and it would be preferable to have a body and engine swap, which would be expected to last longer as well.

    I assume that this Jeep is also registered and has all the tokens paid, otherwise the Registration and token on this vehicle would be quite high.

    Good luck (Y)

    Dear HTZ,

    Sir, though I am not an expert, but here are a few things that may be of interest to you. Generally the govt auctioned vehicles are abused beyond repair, the drivers and staff sell/swap everything that they can, including the fuel even. If you start to restore this vehicle, it will cost you an additional 4 to 5 lacs, which would include the engine, tyres, suspension, interior, paint, air conditioning, etc, and would take 2 to 3 months. Because you would be using this verhicle yourself, you would want to be sure it has reliable components. The restored vehicle may end up costing you around 9 to 10 lacs.

    A convenient alternative is get an NCP vehicle of the same model and have everything swapped down to the nuts and bolts. Cost of an early 90s hard top is in the range of 3.5 to 4 lacs. The end product is expected to be much more reliable and would cause you lesser hassle. The places for getting an NCP vehicle are Peshawar and Torkham. For an additional 30 to 50k, those people can deliver the vehicle here also, but it is better to get the swap done in NWFP as those people are more experienced with this kind of a job and in case you notice any problems, you can have them fixed there and then.

    Good luck (y)

    Thanks Abu Jamal, your comments are really valuable. I agree that there is no point trying to restore this vehicle because even if all other parts are changed still body work will never be as original.

    For a body swap i would rather prefer a 89 or even an older model auctioned vehicle, which will certainly cost me lower than this one as the real thing in such a vehicle are the chasis and nothing else. Thanks once again.

    Hi HTZ, right behind the soft top (in your first picture) you are interested in there is an RKR (probably). Would you happen to know the asking price for that? Thank you and best regards, Omar Cheema

    Dear Omar Cheema,

    I am not sure of the price of the vehicle that you are asking for but next time when i visit the place, i shall certainly let you know the price if possible. By the way the vehicle parked on the back of the soft top is a land cruiser with long chasis, the one which are used by the rangers as ambulances. I believe you are asking about the same right?.

    Hi HTZ, thank you for your reply. If its a long wheel base then never mind. I am looking for the smaller wheel base version (RKR). If you are unable to strike a deal for the mentioned LC please let me know as I have not been able to find anything yet either. Thank you.
