    Gary Anderson's pre-season tech blog

    McLaren launch

For a team with the professionalism of McLaren, to have to go to Berlin to finish building their MP4-26 seems a bit disorganised. But, it said, it wanted the maximum time possible for research and development and I suppose assembling the car in front of the press certainly gave them that!

As with Renault and it's exhausts, Williams and it's gearbox, Toro Rosso with it's very undercut sidepod-to-floor intersection, it's nice to see that McLaren has also gone out on a limb and built something that looks a bit different. Will it work? Only time will tell.

I have never, in my time in Formula 1 seen McLaren reveal as much of a new car at a press launch as it did today. There definitely must be something in the water around the Woking area, normally it is all hush hush and covered up until the car gets to the first race, but this time McLaren has revealed the underwear before the car has turned a wheel.
Well done Martin Whitmarsh for a very bullish approach.

The sidepod arrangement looks a bit like the Benetton B195 and the Ferrari F310 from the mid-1990s. We definitely haven't seen anything like this for quite a few years. There are some other quite interesting features on the car which make it all a bit different, but it does have a very standard exhaust system.

    Force India

It's 20 years on since Jordan Grand Prix was launched and the Jordan 191 was rolled out of the Silverstone workshops. Today we saw Force India's 2011 challenger which is the team that has grown out of the remnants of Jordan. There have been a few different owners along the way but it is great to see someone like Vijay Mallya with the commitment and determination pushing for success in Formula 1.

The new VJM04 is a neat looking piece of kit. It has all the right attributes and as the team said in its press release, there are plenty of new parts to come before the car's first race in Bahrain. There is also a very aggressive development plan for the season.
From what I have seen today I think this will be necessary if it is to achieve its goal of finishing fifth in the championship.

Adrian Sutil, as we know, is a very experienced and competent F1 driver but he does seem a little like a magnet for accidents. Paul di Resta has achieved success in every formula he has driven in, but it will take him time to adapt to life in F1 as a race driver. To achieve fifth in the championship these guys need to be scoring reasonable points in every race and that is no mean feat when you look at the competition around them.

from what i 've read somewhere, it is believed that he almost bled to death due to heavy loss of blood ...

    recent news about it...
According to some reports the Pole lost five pints of blood while being extracted from the car, although that figure has not been confirmed.
    but i don't knw how much is 5 pint ?? ...

from where are u reading those complete articles ?? ...

Other team principals I’ve spoken to today say that their drivers would not be able to take part in such activities. Insurance is a big factor. To insure an F1 driver for F1 driving is actually quite cheap now, because the cars are so safe. A team will typically insure a driver against being unavailable to them. So if a driver is unavailable, the insurance company will pay out for his replacement. They may also pay out for his salary.
.. some very complicated insurance products are out there..

Raikkonen free to return to Formula One

Kimi Raikkonen can pull out of the 2011 World Rally Championship to return to Formula One if he wants to, according to Citroen's rally chief Olivier Quesnel.

His comments come amid reports Raikkonen is now contractually committed to rallying for this season, ruling him out of a possible F1 comeback with Renault as a replacement for the sidelined Robert Kubica.

Report: Ford will attempt to stop Ferrari from using F150 name

Yea right, like anyone was going to mistakenly buy the Ferrari F1 car instead of a pick up And good on Ford for preventing their image from being tarnished, lol. How dare Ferrari name their state of the art car after Ford's best selling truck Henry Ford vs Enzo Ferrari, the saga continues
Anyway, Ferrari have changed the name to Ferrari F150th-Italia

from where are u reading those complete articles ?? ...
Genius is not a genius for no reason

    but i don't knw how much is 5 pint ?? ...
I thought you'd be well versed in ordering a pint of *cough* *cough* never mind
    I think it's about 2 liters. That's what google said i think

Renault to evaluate Heidfeld at Jerez
Nick Heidfeld will test for Renault at Jerez later this week as the outfit evaluates a replacement for the injured Robert Kubica.
Bruno Senna seems to be out of the running for Renault seat. They, Renault, are now looking for a long term replacement and it seems to be between Heidfeld, PDR and strangely Luizzi

Some interesting stuff posted during testing today:

AUTOSPORT's news editor @glenn_autosport says: Eric Boullier has addressed his comments since Robert Kubica's accident. He has said that his initial comments about Senna were in reference to if Renault ever needed a stand-in for a short period of time.

But with the chances of Kubica's absence being anything up to a full season, the team is looking for a replacement under different circumstances to those Boullier was considering when asked at the Renault launch.

Bruno is still in the mix - and will get a chance to test for the team this weekend - but the general feeling coming out of the team is that it needs an experienced campaigner if a long-term stand-in is required.

AUTOSPORT F1 editor @eddstrawF1 says about Mercedes

I have serious concerns about where Mercedes is at the moment, although I must add the caveat that drawing conclusions based on the first test is very dangerous. Ignoring the laptimes, I'm hearing that those inside the team are not delighted with the way the car is performing. If that is the case, Mercedes could be looking at a similar year to 2010.

Having said that, even if Mercedes is struggling right now, that isn't to say that things can't be turned around. In 2008, BMW was in serious trouble early in testing, but at the final test got the car working and Robert Kubica was leading the championship after the Canadian Grand Prix.

There are some capable people at Mercedes and Ross Brawn's leadership can't be under-estimated, so it's best to reserve judgement.

Going back to laptimes, you have to be very careful judging teams based on that in testing. Fuel makes a huge difference (three-tenths of a second per 10kg at Valencia) and teams will be concentrating on their development programmes. This idea that teams are sandbagging early in testing is misleading for the simple reason that no one is chasing headline times. Context is everything.

Talking about their two element front wing:

I'm sure that they have continued to look closely at a three-element design. The basic advantage of a two-element front wing is more surface area and therefore more downforce, but it is far more prone to airflow separation. The team, which as you say, went two-element in 2009 as its form dropped off, but seems committed to making the design work.

There may be some specific reasons for doing this that might only apply to that car; remember, the front wing doesn't work in isolation and they may feel the way the two-element design interacts with the rest of the car is advantageous. As you say, the team is going against the trend, so it's possible that it's the wrong direction – but there's far more to Mercedes's struggles than that I expect.
