    Pirelli: Intelligently testing philosophy

    THE TIRES
The hard and the soft tire will be the prime and option choices for the Malaysia, as was the case in Australia, but with rain such a common feature of Malaysia, the intermediate and wet tires are likely to take center stage as well.

The intermediate tire, distinguished by light blue markings, has a tread that is characterized by light grooves across the whole surface of the tire.
The wet tire, with orange logos, has an asymmetric tread design. The pattern is denser on the outer edge of the tire, while a centre channel and two smaller channels of the inside of the tire help to disperse water more effectively.

The amount of water displaced varies according to the depth of the grooves. The grooves on the intermediate tire are three millimeters deep, meaning that they can cope with standing water that is around two millimeters deep.

Any more water than that and the wet tire is required. The moment at which it becomes quicker to switch from the intermediate to the wet tire and vice versa – the ‘crossover point’ – is of vital strategic importance, and will hold the key to the teams’ tactics in Malaysia.

The wet tire has a tread depth of five millimeters and is able to cope with a level of standing water of up to five millimeters before aquaplaning sets in. One of Pirelli’s wet tires will clear up to 60 liters of water per second at 300kph (186.411 mph), meaning that a Formula One car at full speed will clean up 240 liters of water per second.

The intermediate tires by contrast clear 20 liters of water per second, as opposed to a road car tire that can only clear 10 liters per second – but at much slower speeds.

    THE TRACK
Malaysia presents a stark contrast to the first Grand Prix of the year in Australia, with hot and humid weather matched to a much more aggressive surface. This should lead to three or four pit stops during the race.

The Sepang circuit is 5.543 kilometers (3.44 miles) long, with the total of 56 laps that total 310.408 kilometers (192.878 miles). The circuit is well known for being tough on tires, and that is evident from the very first hard braking area into turn one.

The second turn is even tougher: the unevenness of the surface and the stiff suspension means that the inside wheel often lifts, putting all of the load on the outer front tire.

After the opening complex of corners there is a long right-hand bend taken at 250kph (155.342mph). This turn tends to result in understeer, forcing the driver to make a correction. The front left tire, which does all the work here, is subjected to a vertical load of 830 kilograms (1829.836 lbs).

As well as the two main straights, unusually separated by a hairpin bend, there is a quick succession of fast corners that impose a lateral acceleration of more than 3G on the car and tires. The left-rear tire temperature gradually rises to a peak of 150 degrees (302 degrees Fahrenheit) on the inner edge while accelerating out of the corner. The famous hairpin bend between the two straights is not only crucial, but a key area of stress for the tires, combining braking, turning and acceleration at the same time.

Pirelli come to grips with hot weather, experimental compound

As we mentioned earlier, Pirelli brought a new experimental compound to testing Friday. We were intrigued by how many teams would actually test the tires and provide Pirelli with quality data in which to help them develop the tire compound further. They picked hellish conditions in which to test them. With track temperatures that climbed to 124 degrees Fahrenheit and an ambient temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit it a wonder that any tire could survive the punishment F1 delivers.

damn!!!!! i was watching the race but i was shocked at last moment when i saw vettel tops the timing sheet for pole position.dammnnn!!!! its hamilton's pole position, but ****** vettel got pole position, there is must be something in there car i was closely watching specially RBR there car is so narrow to the track and the front wing too, other cars like mclaren and ferrari there are some space in there car and bend towards forward including front wing. RBR is cheating, they show very low pace in Q1, Q2 and in Q3 bang!!!pole position as well as 2nd on the grid.

thnks for the aaawwwsssommme picture of hamiltons as i save it on my HDD.
but i have humbly and all due to respect request to that plz dont post CHANDKOCK and KARTHICANE or whatever there name is please dont post there pict from close up or in HD resolution please. or completely avoid it please.

Today's session i feel was best described by Brundle and Coulthard with almost identical comments, saying " Red Bull were nearly caught out by trying to be extra clever. Not running their car even once with minimum fuel almost cost them pole because both drivers suffered with balance"

Webber had a problem with KERS in Q3, i believe on his last run, and that is supposed to cost you about 3/10ths around Sepang.

Great job by Mclaren drivers. They took the fight to Red Bull, who i am sure didn't expect anyone getting this close especially on a track like this. It all bodes well for the remainder of the season.

Ferrari, in damage limitation mode could not have expected anything better than 5th. Renault showed decent pace, and again, people will wonder what might have been had Kubica not had his accident.

Further down, solid job by Rosberg, comfortably shading his team mate. Solid job by Kobayashi. Disappointment from qualifying, Williams. Big surprise of qualifying, Lotus. They are two seconds a lap quicker than Virgin and not that far off from making it into Q2.

    @UK
i m trying to imagine what could be there that u have obfuscated .. but it would be rather helpful if u just copy paste it as it is.. plz.. Eddie's education always comes first in these matters.. if he's able to learn something new from these immensely informative pics then i think he has earned the right albeit with fake certificate ...

plz post the pic in its original state.. i can't fathom what could there be which is so close too an F1 car and yet invisible ... u know how impatient Eddie can be.. we all know what he did a few pages back when steve was on leave ...
If i had the picture saved in original form, I would have posted it maybe. I understand, we have to sacrifice a little to make sure young Eddie has a better tomorrow and not allow anything to get in the way of his education.

As for what was cut out, some odds were being offered on Chelsea vs Wigan match. Let`s just say i have never seen odds being offered that way, ever It was a little less than what your average pitbabe wears

When asked about Horner's comments doubting a Vettel/Hamilton partnership could work, Hamilton reckoned that the team principal was simply being defensive of his current driver.
"The only reason I would imagine that he [Horner] would suggest that is because certain individuals don't like being beaten," said Hamilton. "Some individuals can take it. Some people are better losers or better winners. So it is just dependant.
What is he saying. Is he suggesting the " chosen one " will lose or that he is not a good loser

    .
Come back, Luca Badoer, all is forgiven.

Ferrari working on 'flexible' front wing
Ferrari has revealed it is planning to introduce its own version of Red Bull Racing's 'flexible' front wing soon in a bid to help close the gap to the front of the field. After ongoing intrigue in Malaysia about the behaviour of Red Bull Racing's front wing, following fresh questions from McLaren about the RB7's characteristics, a number of rival teams are now expected to harness the concept.

Ferrari mystified by lack of speed
Ferrari has admitted that it is struggling for answers as to why its new car has proved to be no match for McLaren and Red Bull Racing so far this season. The Italian outfit had headed into the Malaysian Grand Prix seeking confirmation as to whether its Australia form had been the result of an aerodynamic deficit or tyre issues related to the cold weather.

Pole slot moved to right hand side
Pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix was switched to the right hand side of the track following a pre-event request from drivers, AUTOSPORT has learned. Traditionally the front grid slot at Sepang was on the left hand side of the track, because it gave a better line into the opening corner - which is a tight right-hander.

    Schumacher blames DRS
Michael Schumachersaid a problem with his Drag Reduction System (DRS) was to blame for his poor qualifying performance at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Schumacher failed to make Q3 after a slow final lap, over 0.6 seconds off his team-mate Nico Rosberg and only good enough for 11th. Mercedes DRS is one of the most effective on the grid but he indidcated that it was not working to its full potential in Malaysia.

    Massa expects 'defensive' race
Felipe Massa has said that Ferrari's lack of pace means it will be driving a "defensive race" after he qualified seventh for the Malaysian Grand Prix. Ferrari has struggled all weekend, and both drivers admitted after Friday practice that they were in for a difficult weekend. With Red Bull and McLaren locking out the front two rows in qualifying Fernando Alonso took fifth place, but Massa said the team could not look realistically look to finish any higher in the race.

Excellent race by Schumacher who started from 11th while Barbie started from 9th. Immediately, Schumi rocketed to 8th and finished in 9th while Barbie was 20 seconds behind in 12th. This is ***-kicking at its best.

That said, MGP is a $hit car. They have no pace at all and are a torture on the tires. Considering they started developing this car earliest, this is a shame for development team of MGP. Guess only high time for all Schumacher fans will be him beating Barbie and and no podiums let alone a race win

^ alright.. good for schumi and his fans.. but i think its one of the rare occasion where schumi was able to finish ahead of his team-mate (lolz @Barbie ) ... but schumi can certainly do this on more occasions than one..

and it was strange to see MGP struggling and eventually loosing a battle with Kobiyashi ... KOB is amazing fighter..
