What fired up Red Bull’s key players in 2010 F1 season

There is a piece in the new edition of the Red Bulletin magazine where the key players in the Red Bull team talk about their favourite moments of the year, which offers a few insights into what motivates them and what was most important to them, with the benefit of hindsight.

Adrian Newey said that for him the most special thing about this year was taking on the big teams and beating them. The Red Bull project is the fulfilment of a dream he had tried to fulfil over 20 years ago, of building up a small private team to beat the might of teams like Ferrari and McLaren, “Once before in my life, with Leyton House, I had the chance to do something similar,” he says. “That was a very promising operation , but it fell apart because of money problems. To get a second chance with a young, small team and become world champions tastes sweet.”

World champion Sebastian Vettel revealed that during the showdown race in Abu Dhabi he asked his engineer not to tell him what position his rivals were in, clearly not wanting to have his hopes built up and then potentially shattered as Felipe Massa’s were in Brazil in 2008. Only once the rivals had crossed the line and it was clear he was champion, did his engineer tell him. “At that moment the world stood still,” said Vettel, “Nothing moved, there was no sound no heartbeat, nothing. “

Mark Webber says that his highlight was winning Monaco, something all drivers dream of when they are karting as children. “The drivers’ trophy? I’ll get that next year,” he says confidently.

Perhaps the most interesting contribution comes from Dr Helmut Marko, the special adviser to the team who represents the interests of the Austrian management. He is the only one who feels the need to makes reference to the two most controversial incidents of the season , Turkey and Silverstone and the way the team handled them. He says that the Silverstone front wing switch “wasn’t communicated properly,” something for which team principal Christian Horner has already taken the blame. Marko says that this “resulted in a lot of emotion and put a shadow over the weekend after a brilliant win. It was unfortunate because the difference between the wings in terms of perfprmance was absolutely minimal, but a lot of emotion got out.”

This passage is the only tone of negativity in the piece and to offset that Marko describes these situations as “lucky problems” to have.

Team boss Christian Horner says that history shows that it will be very hard to defend the two championships next year.

    Sutil: F1's master of overtaking
It's strange but it's true. Force India driver Adrian Sutil made more 'proper' overtaking moves than anybody else during the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship. Time after time his aggressive nature behind the wheel yielded him position after position as the German made 40 genuine passing manoeuvres during the 19 races staged; that's twice as many as world champion Sebastian Vettel and four times more than Jenson Button.

To determine F1's 'raciest' driver, the Castrol Rankings delved deep into the stats amassed over the 2010 season and recorded how many on-track overtaking manoeuvres each driver made.

Mercedes GP pit crew were fastest in 2010
The team did not field the best car in 2010 but Mercedes’ pit crew was the fastest in pitlane. An analysis by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport showed that the Brackley based team turned around Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg faster in pitstops than any rival outfit.
The refuelling ban this year put in focus the speed of a pit crew’s tyre changing. The fastest stop in 2010 was 2.9 seconds, achieved by the Red Bull crew whilst servicing world champion Sebastian Vettel at Monza.

Come back, Luca Badoer, all is forgiven.

Renault is not Lotus so don't call them that.

    @m_waqas
Well the Lotus saga is because of Group Lotus putting political pressure on Tony Fernandes's Lotus and they are wrong in doing that.

alright,.. thanks steve.. here is something i found to clear my (and others) confusion over this damn Lotus saga ...

Group Lotus confirms buy-in to Renault F1 team

There will be a new partnership on the F1 grid next year as Group Lotus, owned by the Malaysian government via Proton, has bought a stake in the Enstone based F1 team, creating Lotus Renault GP.

This deal, which sees Lotus come in both as an equity partner alongside Genii Capital, the teams’ main shareholder, and as the main sponsor of the team, has been mooted for many months now and was finally signed off at the start of this week. In addition to a stake in the team, which is open ended, Lotus will be the title sponsor until at least 2017.

For the moment, Genii has bought out Renault’s 25% stake and will then sell a stake to Group Lotus, believed to be between 25% and 50%.

A photo with proposed livery has been issued and the car switches to the iconic black and gold of the JPS Lotus days from the 1970s. This was an idea that Tony Fernandes announced for Team Lotus for next year and he ran a fan competition to design the livery.

Although this move means the end of Renault having a stake in an F1 team, its name remains on several levels. First the chassis will still be called a Renault. Second, the car will have significant Renault branding, thirdly the engine operation in Viry Chatillon will operate as Renault Sport F1 and as such will be a profit centre for Renault, supplying the engines to Lotus Renault GP, Red Bull and the team currently entered as Team Lotus and owned by Tony Fernandes.

So without any of the liability of running its own team, Renault is still getting a lot out of this deal and there is a financial consideration for this, but nothing like what it used to spend. To the man in the street it will look like Renault is still heavily engaged in F1 and will benefit from any success the team accrues.... (contd.)

^ well this clears up things for me.. and after reading this, i think Renault made a strategically good decision for themselves ...

What are Hulkenberg’s chances of a Force India deal?

Brazilian Grand Prix polesitter Nico Hulkenberg should find out very soon if he is going to be on the grid next season, as Force India is poised to decide its drivers. And Mercedes may well hold the key.

Invasion of the Black and Golds: Bahar says, “Four Lotus cars on grid suits me”

Tonight F1 fans are a little confused and a little concerned as they contemplate a 2011 season with four black and gold Lotus Renault cars on the track, two owned by the Enstone based Lotus Renault GP and two – in slightly different livery – owned by Norfolk based Team Lotus.

lolz.. should we welcome this or what ?? ...

what a joke man.. FIA should either let it go completely or stick to it... the middle para makes me laugh ...

A number of changes were confirmed in the sporting regulations from 2011, and the governing body said the "article forbidding team orders (39.1) is deleted."

The FIA said, however, that there would still be a rule to allow it to punish teams if it considers they had brought the sport into disrepute with their actions.

"Teams will be reminded that any actions liable to bring the sport into disrepute are dealt with under Article 151c of the International Sporting Code and any other relevant provisions," it said.

FIA World Council: Eco engine confirmed for F1 in 2013, team orders banned

The FIA World Motor Sport Council met in Monaco today and two significant things came out of it. First the WMSC approved the small capacity turbo engine which has been under discussion for some months and second it dropped the controversial rule banning team orders from F1 with effect from 2011 onwards. This follows the unsatisfactory outcome of the hearing into the Ferrari team orders incident in Germany this season.

You have not missed any thing, I make the calendar as per the rule that German GP will be hosted alternatively between Hockenheim and Nurburgring and I don't think there is any update that Hockenheim will host the German GP in next season. Although when the season starts it becomes clear where we are going and I will update the calendar.
