Default Why Pakistanis HATE seat belts?

I've yet to see a guy here in Lahore driving while wearing a seat belt... I never saw a person driving 'without' a seat belt during my stay in U.S! Is it the part of our culture or what? Its not like wearing seat belts is difficult and/or time consuming. It takes less then 5 sec to wear one...
Yesterday, I saw a Cultus accident near Scheme Morr, Lahore on Allama Iqbal Town Main Road. The car was halfway over the foot path and there was a round dent on the driver's side of windshield. The driver lost control at high speed, car ran over the foot path and collided with a tree. The collision caused his head to slam real hard on the windshield... Was he wearing his seat belt, he would've walked away unharmed...
Why? Why we never wear seat belts and why we never demand air bags from our auto manufacturers... Why we buy cars that will fail miserabily in American crash test rankings?
Why we put premium on affordability and never on our safety?

    1.Yar shirt kharab ho gi.
    2.Yar kon lagaye seat belt.
    3.Abey yar style kharab hoga.
    4.Yar dost mazak udayien gaye.
5.Yar seat belt buht uncomfart feeling deta hai.
6.Yar kuch nhi hota seat belt say.

Don't know about Lahore but an increasing number of people have started wearing seatbelts in Karachi.
There was some hope from Japanese cars and the newer Corollas and Civics with the beeping without wearing a seatbelt but now there are aftermarket accessories to buckle into the seatbelt sensors.

I started wearing seat belts back in late 80's for all the wrong reasons.....to avoid getting caught by the police since I was in school and didn't have drivers's license as i was in grade 8 or 9. But that made me so comfortable with the seat belts that it became habit since then. Now I cant drive without one. Back then in those old days, it was very odd to see someone wearing a seatbelt and my friends used to make fun of me by sayinig "voh dekho....show maar raha hay" but I felt safe with seat belts on.

Thanks to motoroway police now the situation has improved a lot especially in Islamabad but I also see people in Lahore wearing seat belts. Mostly because of police but also due to awareness about the seat belts and safety. However the change is very slow and sadly I still meet people who never used seat belts in their entire life.

    Seriously?

The extent to which people will go just to stay unsafe at all times, is nothing short of stroke-inducing.

Seat Belt laga kar aik bound bound ki feeling aati hai... Thats why i never used to buckle it.. But on my recent visit to ISB, i was stopped by the traffic police and fined 300/-Rs for not using seat belts.. I started to use it that time, and believe me that uncomfortable feeling goes away after 5 mins of using the seat belt..But here In Lahore I had never given it 5 mins times.. after 1 – 2 mins I used to un-buckle it k yaar its very uncomfortable..

    Adding a bit Fun..

While using seat belts in ISB, This happened twice with me the same day that I forgot to unbuckle it before getting out of the car. Lol.. Twice I was thrown back to seat while trying to exit the car.. Believe me itni tapp charhti hai jab aisay ho….

    But here

The accompanying passenger says: " Yar konsa motorway par chala raha hai"
Almost everyone in Pakistan is doing corruption to the extent they can. Our leaders are doing at the level they can do. So why should we complain?

Times' changed....I don't think now people stare at you for wearing the seat belts. Its time we start wearing it instead of saying proudly that "We don't wear it".

@omarabdulla022 On a second glance I noticed you are from karachi. I was in the city for couple of days this week and I have to agree with you....most people in Kci don't wear seat belts. In fact I didn't see anyone except me...even the driver of the my car was surprised when I put on the seat belt and then asked him to follow the suit. Situation is quite different in Lahore and Isloo or so I think. My company's drviers in lahore all wear seat belts.

    Thumbs up Must wear!

I started wearing seatbelts, in earnest, in 2002, and since then have worn them whether I am driving or a passenger. Ask my passengers to buckle up too. I don't feel safe if I am not wearing a seatbelt. And in Pakistan they think you are a coward if you wear a seatbelt

ask them if they will be brave when people are offering their namaz-e-janaaza? If they are the "holy" type - tell them that not wearing seatbelt is akin to "suicide" and suicide is a sin - you go to hell for it.

for makeup freak ladies tell them that if they dont wear the seat belt - and they crash - their pretty face will be permanently disfigured after the crash and no amount of makeup or surgery can correct that - They will immediately start wearing it.

For the new "nakaam romeo stereotype" tell them that chicks dig this, vice versa for birds/lasses - and watch them immediately do it (albeit only infront of colleges or coffee shops)

For the "gym dweller" tell him that its the new super masculine fad - it will make your pecs and neck look amazing - sim,lar for ladies, except pecs etc - replace them with any proper feminine appendage name as you please.

I have never driven my car without a seat belt and I dont why people over here are so much naive that they think more about "what people will think" else than being safe!
