gasoline engine requires 4 things to work

    1 air
    2 fuel
    3 compression
    4 spark

the air and fuel are sucked in together - the fuel is sprayed/atomised into the air (doesnt matter if carby or injector) - if there is too much fuel compared to air - you get black smoke, the usual ratio of air to fuel ranges between 13:1~14.7:1

if you get to 13:1 under no load - you get black belching smoke, if you go under this - e.g. 12:1 or 11:1 you stall out usually.

for carburettors, its usually a blocked emulsifying passage in the carby, or inoperative secondary or flooded bowl, in EFI it can be many other items like bad air metering sensing, bad engine temperature sensing etc.

It can also be bad compression in engine, stuck EGR, bad timing.
