Default DOs and DON'Ts for Car Maintenance / Repairs

    Guideline for posting

    .. keep it general
    .. keep it simple
.. quote authority or reference where available
.. correct, what proves to be wrong later
    .. avoid unnecessary discussion

    Thanks

    Examples

    - Do change engine oil once in 6 months even if prescribed mileage has not been achieved
    - Don't
remove CAT (catalyst convertor), either clean it or replace it

    Purpose

Of this thread is to share knowledge on everyday issues .. question where the advice is not clear .. a healthy sharing and discussion .. in a typical thread not everyone gets knowledge then sometimes contradictions end up in unwanted debates .. hopefully those elements will surface less here

    - cheap brake disc pads are usually hard and cause irregular wear in disc

Don't run your car on mix of 2 RON type fuel. Eg mixing 87 and 91.

Only use what prescribed by the manufacturer.

The throttle body do not require adjustments and it is not necessary to open radiator cap and brake fluid caps for daily/ weekly check.

The repairs need to meet the manufacturers specs with out short cuts.

Don't wash the car with surf or similar detergents, use a good wash & wax shampoo along with a premium wash mitt.
Never dry dust the car under any circumstances.
Always use premium products to nourish the paint, if you can pay for the car spend some money for its proper care too.

not recommended, buy toyota or honda branded coolant .. price est 3-4k.. make sure there is no leakage in sytem and no engine overhaul due in near future or it will be a waste of money

thanks .. a very pertinent point .. oil and diesel mix sprays reduce life of rubber bushes .. sludge forms underneath since this mixture acts like glue .. moisture in this sludge causes early rusting

A little knowledge is dangerous. Know what you have to do and understand the concept fully so any mishap can be dealt with.

Engine oil isn't the only fluid in your car. There is brake oil, clutch oil, power steering fluid, gear oil, ATF. Every oil eventually breaks down and needs to be replaced/flushed.

removing thermostat and direct fan causes engine to attain desired temp late .. this causes extra wear since oils and engine parts are designed to work more efficiently on a certain temp ... in short the life of such engine would be under 100k kms ... this explanation is for others who read ur post .. thanks for sharing

brake oil has a prscribed life .. as u quoted so it must be 1 yr .. after that, it expires .. reduces in compression quality and reacts with rubber parts resulting in early failure of brake kits and reduced brake efficiency
