    Default - FORMULA 1 Season 2007 - (RAIKONNEN WINS)

There is considerable time left in the start of the season but there are a lot of news coming through. So, just like last time we had a single thread about F1 2006 season I am starting this thread for the 2007 Season. This will allow all of us to discuss things at one place.

My request to all the F1 fans, please post F1 2007 related stuff here.

    1. Similar Chassis.

I think such a concept will not be supported by any of the teams.

    2. Smaller Engines

No, Please no. In fact I would like to see the V10 back in action. I read that engines as small as 1.3L were proposed.

    3. MAD

These devices should be allowed, as the chances of these devices failing have greatly reduced since the last time they were used. This proposal could very much become a reality.

    4. Slick Tyres

Sure, but no single tyre manufacturer.

    5. Turbos

Turbos will definitely be legalized in F1 in the future. As the engines will now have to last for 5 races, I guess in the future F1 engines will be stable enough to have a turbo.

Honda ready for the Hungarian heat
    ================================================== ==========

Hungarian GP - Honda - Preview
    28/07/07 09:43

Formula One heads east next weekend to Budapest for Round 11 of the World Championship, the Hungarian Grand Prix.

After a dramatic race in the cooler, wetter climes of Germany last week, the Hungaroring is expected to bask in ambient temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius. The beautiful city of Budapest is always a favourite pitstop on the Formula One calendar and the Honda Racing F1 Team look forward to returning to the scene of their first win one year ago where Jenson Button scored his first victory.

    Shuhei Nakamoto, Senior Technical Director
"At our test in Jerez this week we worked on our set-up for Hungary and conducted an evaluation of our aerodynamic updates for this race. I am pleased to say that we found a good baseline. The Hungaroring provides a mixture of high and low speed turns and so mechanical grip is very important. The extremely hot conditions provided a good opportunity to test the engine and again the result was positive with good reliability."

"We understand that next weekend will be very hot indeed and so Jerez was a good acclimatisation opportunity for the challenging air and track temperatures we will face there. We hope to be in a position to score a point or two."

    Rubens Barrichello
"Next weekend is going to be a hot one! Possibly one of the hottest Hungarian Grand Prix.
Our test in Jerez this week was a good opportunity to acclimatise to those conditions, both personally and for the car. We have some new developments - aero and mechanical - which worked well at the test and we seem to have found a little more performance, so we will see how they translate to the Hungaroring. I have had some good races there, winning once in 2002 and then a couple more podium finishes as well. I'm looking forward to it as it's a track I quite enjoy. I hope we can fight for a good result."

Jenson Button, a lap of the track
"The Hungaroring is a track with good rhythm and a good mix of slow-speed and high-speed turns. It was never really one of my favourite races before, but for obvious.............

    For Montoya Fans

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Montoya set to complete Indy hat trick
    =========================================
Former F1 racer on the NASCAR trail

    28/07/07 11:34

Colombian racer Juan Pablo Montoya will become the first driver to start Formula One, Indy Car and stock car events at Indianapolis Motor Speedway when he takes to the track on Sunday.

Montoya won the 2000 Indianapolis 500, becoming the first rookie to capture the Indy-car classic since the late English F1 star Graham Hill in 1966, and raced in the US Grand Prix F1 event here from 2001 through 2006.

Now Montoya is a NASCAR rookie, the most popular form of US auto racing that makes its annual trek to the famed 2.5-mile "Brickyard" oval for Sunday's Allstate 400.

"It's going to be funny and weird," Montoya said. "I ran at Indy once, for the 500, and haven't been on the oval since. It should be a big challenge. I didn't find the road course that challenging but I think the oval is very different from anything else we do with four corners. The first time I ever did a track with four proper corners was there.
    "

"A lot of important things in my career have happened at Indy."

It will be much tougher for any other driver to duplicate Montoya's Indy treble after Indy speedway owner Tony George parted ways with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone over money issues earlier this month, ending the US F1 Indy era.

Montoya won seven F1 races but left the circuit last year for the full-bodied, chassis-banging world of NASCAR racing that excites American crowds. Montoya won his first NASCAR race last month in a California road course event where he started 32nd to join Mario Andretti and Dan Gurney as the only racers to win Indy Car, F1 and NASCAR races.

    Hamilton's qualifying accident explained

A failure on the wheelgun, or at least the wrong pneumatic air pressure applied to it, was at the root of Lewis Hamilton's qualifying accident at the Nurburgring. To summarise, the fault meant it was not possible for the mechanic changing the right-front wheel to completely fasten the wheel nut (1), although it did allow the safety pin (2) to be pulled into its required...........................

LOL @sub7er. These rules will make even A1 look faster than F1.

Audi (VW) and/or Porshce are entering F1 soon.

    Hamilton annoys GPDA stalwarts
    ===================================
    Coulthard wanting more driver take-up
    29/07/07 12:53

Some of Lewis Hamilton's more experienced on-track rivals are reportedly frustrated with the rookie championship leader.

According to the Spanish newspaper Diario As, the 22-year-old Briton has repeatedly refused to join the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA); the safety-oriented drivers' union.

GPDA stalwart David Coulthard last year admitted frustration with some of his fellow drivers who show reluctance to contribute to the sport beyond their team duties.

The Red Bull driver said the union "is the only route via which they can influence their sport and yet they don't seem to want to know."

I dont see slick tire returning to F1 anytime in the near future and if it does it must be with only one tire supplier. Teams/ drivers will not agree to a slick tire war given they are unhappy with safety at some tracks even now. Secondly more than half the testing used to be for tires when we had two different suppliers. It`s too expensive so unlikely to happen.

As for the VW rumour, have heard it for so long, but dont see that happening in the near future either. The only way for them to enter F1 in the foreseable future will be with Prodrive, but again unlikely in my opinion.
Come back, Luca Badoer, all is forgiven.

Tyre rule tweak possible for 2008

Creating interest with a monopoly supplier
    30/07/07 180

Some Formula One power brokers are pushing for a tweak to the tyre regulations for 2008, according to German reports.

The specialist magazine Auto Motor und Sport said on Monday that, to spice up the racing and strategy options, a more assorted selection of tyre compounds could be offered by Bridgestone at each Grand Prix.

Currently, the two compounds made available to teams at races are fairly similar - for instance, this weekend in Hungary, each driver must use both the 'soft' and the white-branded 'super soft' during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

But some team bosses are reportedly arguing that varying the tyre options available - for example, the 'super soft' and the 'medium' in Hungary - would lead to a more mixed jumble of pace and a higher prospect of in-race passing.

Auto Motor und Sport claims that the smaller teams are championing the idea, but that their more competitive rivals are not overly keen.

Bridgestone is also thought to be resisting, as implementing the proposal properly for 2008 would probably involve tweaking its existing range of tyre compounds at some cost.

    Furious Ferrari set to sue?

Options available to the Ferrari team
    30/07/07 16:50

Ferrari chiefs plan to escalate the espionage scandal even further by commencing legal action against McLaren, according to latest reports from Italy.

Following the World Motor Sport Council's controversial acquittal of Woking based McLaren last Thursday, a spokesman for Ferrari on Monday confirmed that FIA rules do not allow an appeal to be sought.

The spokesman told the BBC, however, that the Maranello based team - angry that its title rival was not penalised for possessing secret Ferrari information - was 'evaluating all possible options' in the wake of the Paris hearing.

La Gazzetta dello Sport is now reporting that Ferrari plan to submit a request for prosecution with the legal authorities in Modena.

The Italian sports daily said the six-page complaint would be lodged on Tuesday morning.

Ferrari is already pursuing legal action in Italy against sacked employee Nigel Stepney, and in England against suspended McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan for receiving the 780 pages of Ferrari secrets.

Ferrari would not confirm the news.

    Renault in Johannesburg

Roadshow pulls in the fans in South Africa
    30/07/07 17:56

Following on from the opening event of 2007, held in Warsaw, Poland in early June, the ING Renault F1 Team Roadshow was in action again this weekend in South Africa, putting on an exceptional show in the streets of the Sandton district.

Giancarlo Fisichella and Nelson Piquet Jr took turns at the wheel of the world championship-winning R26, entertaining the South African public with tricks including doughnuts, burn-outs and some spectacular demonstrations of the car’s performance. On Sunday, a crowd of 100,000 spectators turned out to enjoy this unique show, underlining the passion for Formula 1 in a country that hasn’t welcome a Grand Prix since the last F1 race was held at Kyalami in 1993.

The crowds also enjoyed a parade of historic Renault vehicles, as well as seeing the Mégane Trophy and Mégane Renault F1 Team R26 put through their paces on the custom-built street circuit.

As he stepped from the car after his final run, Giancarlo Fisichella commented: “The crowd has been fantastic today, you can tell they have really enjoyed seeing an F1 car in action! This is my first visit to South Africa, and it has been a truly memorable experience.”

Nelson Piquet Jr shared his team- warm appreciation of the South African public’s warm welcome: “The team’s Roadshow programme is a fantastic way to let the public get closer to Formula 1, and this weekend has shown once again how much people appreciate that approach. The welcome here in Johannesburg has been fantastic, and I think the people enjoyed the show. Mission accomplished!”

No point in an appeal according to Ecclestone

''I don't think it will make any difference''
    30/07/07 15:10

Bernie Ecclestone has urged Ferrari to pass up the temptation to appeal the FIA's decision last Thursday to not penalise McLaren for espionage.

The reaction from within Maranello and the Italian press has been universal in condemnation, and even Italian World Motor Sport Council member Luigi Macaluso broke ranks and FIA protocol last week and revealed that he thought guilty McLaren should have received a ban for possessing confidential Ferrari material.

"Juventus were sent down to Serie B for a lot less," he said last week.

The World Council's verdict was, however, apparently unanimous, and F1 Chief Executive Ecclestone says that should be the end of it.

And, having previously described the spying affair as 'nonsense', he told the British newspaper News of the World: "If Ferrari think the wrong decision has been made they have every right to appeal and I think they will.

"But I don't think it will make any difference to the championship positions in the end."

Mercedes-Benz competition chief Norbert Haug also seemed unfazed by the prospect of his team facing another court test.

"Any appeal would have exactly the same result," he told German media. "I'm not worried. We're cleaner than clean."

Mosley agrees to re-open McLaren spy case
    ====================================

FIA Court of Appeal to hear team arguments

FIA President Max Mosley on Tuesday agreed to send the espionage case against McLaren to the governing body's Court of Appeal.

Following the written request of Ferrari's national sanctioning organisation, the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI), Mosley said it was right to further investigate the case because Ferrari had not been allowed to present evidence in last Thursday's hearing of the World Motor Sport Council.

McLaren in Paris was found to be in breach of clause 151c of the International Sporting Code but was not penalised, which in ACI president Luigi Macaluso's view is 'quite difficult to justify'.

He claimed that 'several top team representatives' of McLaren knew about chief designer Mike Coughlan's espionage activities over several months, but that Ferrari had been unable to counter McLaren's defence that no employee besides Coughlan knew about the 780-pages of secret information.

In a written reply to Macaluso, who after the Paris hearing had also verbally questioned the FIA's decision, Mosley said probing the matter further was also important for 'public confidence in the outcome'.

He wrote: "I will send this matter to the FIA Court of Appeal ... with a request that the Court hear both Ferrari and McLaren and any other Championship competitor who so requests and determine whether the decision of the WMSC was appropriate and, if not substitute such other decision as may be just."

Ferrari spy on me - Stepney
    =====================================

''Someone gave away the designs but it wasn't me''

Nigel Stepney has turned the heat back onto Ferrari by claiming that his former Italian employer is still spying on him.

Michael Schumacher's sacked former chief mechanic, who is at the centre of the espionage saga that has scandalised Formula One, hit back at Ferrari just days after Maranello based chiefs expressed rage that McLaren escaped punishment for spying.

"Ferrari spy on me," Briton Stepney is quoted on Tuesday as telling the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

He said he has again fled Italy, and revealed that he was followed 'the whole way' from Modena to France.

"They can do whatever they want to me but they have dragged my family into this," said Stepney, who claims he is the victim of a set-up.

He added: "Someone gave away the (780 pages of) designs but it wasn't me. Someone set me up and that person is still working for Ferrari.

"But I don't want to say any more because I only know part of the story. Ferrari knows everything."

Stepney also said the 'white powder' and accusations of sabotage are part of the set up.

"They put the powder in my pants pocket while I was taking a shower," he insists.

He said he only thought about joining a band of disgruntled Ferrari employees who wanted to defect to another team after his relationship with boss Jean Todt began to break down.

"It would have been led by my friend Ross Brawn," Stepney said.

He also revealed that he has accepted a new job outside of the sport, categorically ruling out joining McLaren after being labelled a 'McLaren informer' by Ferrari's Italian lawyers.

He said: "I do not like Ron Dennis. I met him only once and he suggested that I work for him."
