    Default Karachi Traffic Solution

    I am fed up of these traffic jams. In a city like Karachi where millions are gained and lost in a matter of seconds, time is the most vital thing.

    The authorities have only been publicizing about a traffic solution for Karachi, and they have come up with some plans but nothing significant. I, as a citizen of Karachi have my own opinion about what the solution should be.

    1- There are two main industrial areas in Karachi S.I.T.E and Landhi/Quaidabad/Korangi. Every day millions of workers travel to these two zones. These people mostly live in Malir, Orangi, Garden and Sohrab Goth. Hence they have to travel through most of the city to get to their places of work. They only travel by buses and these buses are a major factor in causing traffic jams, pollution etc. Buses are not rightfully utilized in Karachi. There are 10’s of thousands of buses in Karachi but still people have to travel in them like cattle. I think buses should not run on these long routes. It is fine if a bus is running between the Airport and Tower but running a bus from Pakistan Steel to Tower is not a good idea. For longer routes we should have local trains. No need to introduce state of the art multi-billion dollar Metro trains in Karachi. All you have to do is make sure that your local rail system functions properly. Karachi local train should run on the following routes:

    a- From Pakistan Steel to Tower along Shahra-e-Faisal
    b- From Pakistan Steel to Orangi Town/S.I.T.E through Sohrab Goth
    c- From Sohrab Goth to Tower through Garden.

    2- An alternate route should be laid alongside Shahra-e-Faisal to ease the congestion and to avoid road blocks for VIPs. I have heard that there is a plan regarding such an alternative route along the Malir River. I think that would be excellent. A free way should be built alongside Malir river free from two-wheelers and Buses.

    3- The city center should be connected to the suburbs by freeways.

    4- Intra City buses should not enter the city center ( Sadar, Old Sabzi Mandi etc )

    5- The city needs more parking plazas than mobile malls. Huge Parking Plazas should be constructed at Nursery, I.I.Chundrighar, Tariq Road etc.

    If you have any opinions about the solution please post them.

    Lets have a healthy discussion here, no non serious replies please.

    this city seriously need mass transit projects like revival and upgradation of circular railway and other light rail projects... people should not go to work in their own cars like in west they have underground tubes and trains.. which people use during rush hours and they charge high parking rates during rush hour if u enter city center in ur car....

    mass transit projects are needed for this city no matter how much they cost.. coz the feul and time lost during these traffic jams is costing us far more so its better to use moeny to build some useful infrastructure then waste it all in traffic jams

    Traffic jam is a serious issue and it increases the physical and mental stress levels. While metro trains / subways / flyovers are all feasible solutions, things won't work for good until and unless 100% dedication is shown by the stake holders, that is, government and public.

    Currently the construction is going on in Karachi without considering the people who would use these roads and bridges. Majority of traffic jams happen these days due to the ongoing development work. Also, most of the drivers do not have road / civic / common sense. Lane jumping, over-taking and high speeding are order of the day.

    Here is a piece, about some reasons and solutions for traffic issues, I did a while back.

    http://www.chowrangi.com/traffic-jams-in-karachi-reasons-and-solutions.html

    I think government and public both have to join hands and work sincerely to resolve the issue else things would get worse by each day.

    totally agree.

    @kashaziz

    Totally agree with you.

    The link you posted contains an excellent article.

    The thing is that we have to rely on our own resources. The idea of subways, electric trains etc. is fascinating for sure, but we have to think for the working class, these are the people who use the local transport system. I think subways and electric trains will be more expensive to implement than the local rail system that is already present (but in a terrible state). A system will only be successful in Pakistan if it is comparatively less expensive.

    The authorities should plan out a simple and easily implementable solution. They should leave their MAGLEV plans for the future. Karachi's problems can only be solved by a local.

    Actually authorities are not sincere in solving any issues. They are busy in minting money on taxpayer's expenses.

    @surfer
    A really good topic. Although one individual's reply got me extremely mad.
    I think all the animal carts+rickshaws should be banned and be replaced with taxis, providing the owners with easy loans to buy taxis.
    Subway system is the best for Karachi,as it reduces and saves the tracks and rails from security point of niew, but then problem would be mass-digging, causing a real incovenience. There should be no private busess running for general public. The transportation must be privitized and only be offered by the real transportation companies. So they be responsible for the safety of passengers, pay taxes and keep environment friendly busses.
    No enroachment. And people must held their Nazims accountable if there is any, since it is their duty to keep it clean.
    There must be a law that all the shopping centers, offices, public or private accomodation or any any kind of places have their own parking lots. If there are no parking lots and people park their cars on the road, the nazims must summon the plaza or shop holders to accomodate parking place on their own property with in certain period.

    Allah hafiz.

    Subway system and huge parking structure should solve the problem. Once, subway system is in place the number of buses, taxis and cars on the road should go down. They should also prohibit use of commercial heavy duty vehicles during rush hours.

    i think mass transit system will ease bit of traffic problem , what i have been observing in last few years that traffic problem is every where like in duabi, japan, bangkok , malaysia, blabh blah ............therefore u get all sort of navigation system which assist u to avoid traffic.

    like i was in malaysia 2 weeks back , in kuala lumpur there is city center called bukit bintang , it took us 45 min to just cover almost 4 km , wherelse monorail was just right above our head when we were in taxi.... then i went to dubai ppl told me that to travel to shahrjah it take 2 hour during peak hours where it just use to take 25 min few year backs......even nowdays taxi driver avoid goin to dubai downtown cos they will loose time and money also....

    now the CONCLUSION is that trafiic can be organzied , we all have to be patient in traffic jams, which every 1 does thru out the world.......

    JUST CHILL OUT IN TRAFFIC .....

    Traffic is not a problem when authorities use their BIG brains in thinking for public instead thinking for themselves. What happened if:

    1- If City & Cantt Stations are shut down & 01 single stations built near Karachi airport. This will reduce public transport load within City joining at City n Cantt Stations.

    2- If Carriage way built above Rail track from Malir to City stations to west wharf Station instead on Sh-e-Faisal

    3-If Sh-e-Faisal be used for Cars & Vans only. Truck movement to be restricted till 10:30pm

    4-Dryports built in Industrial Areas to keep containers loaded/unloaded without moving from West Wharf or Kemari Depot to Korangi /Landhi or Site.

    @UsmanAnsari

    Yeah, I just went outside and the traffic is perfectly alright.

    @ARS

    Yes, I totally agree with you. Al the animal carts and rickshaws should be replaced with TMC Alif and Bay vehicles. I think these vehicles can prove to be revolutionary. These vehicles are small, easily manoeuvrable and environment friendly.

    Yes, subways are the ultimate solution, but, I think right now this city needs an instant solution and for that I think the local train system is appropriate.

    Hello!
    well good roads and removal of Illegal stalls and parking from road sides might solve this to 60%..........!
    then what needed is parking lots in places like Saddar M.A Jinnah Road and II.Chundrigar road......and many.....
    as there are some on major mega projects going on soo....lets hope for best........
    Limited amount of Mini Buses.......more Big Buses with separate Lane Defined......!
    Timings also plays major part...as sometimes.....5 6 Buses can block one small passout and reason...a big traffif jamn behind....!
    so there should be all arranged Signals......!
    and once for all....ppl should have patience in their as they enter the side from where the car was coming in opposite direction......result...once person gets in wrong..then 2nd 3rd......line created....the one coming from front won't pass out and whole mess starts up....results in traffic jamn..
    so ppl should be aware of that facts and must have patience.....!
    lets pray ALLAH will this problem be solved soon...!
    we daily waste allover millons ruppes of fuel just standing in traffic jamn...!
    Thanxxx

    Agreed.

    The authorities should make sure that no one gets a license without test.

    Transport drivers should be taught how they should be driving by holding short courses on an urgent basis.
