Alonso has 'some idea' what he wants to do

Fernando Alonso remained tight-lipped about his plans for next year and whether or not he will leave McLaren, as speculation about the Spaniard's future continue to intensify.

The two-time world champion has been tied with almost every team by now, with recent speculations suggesting he may swap seats with Nico Rosberg at Williams.

But Alonso himself admitted even he does not yet know where he will drive next year.

"There are many options open, we are discussing all of them," he told Telecino. "I have some idea of what I want to do; a plan, or a hope. I know what I'd like to do next year, but I don't know if it's possible.

"Whatever happens, it will be a difficult season."

Alonso returned to his home town in Oviedo, Spain, over the weekend to the welcoming cheers of tens of thousands of fans who hailed the two-time champion as he spoke to a high balcony.

"On this day, the tribute should be paid to you, not me, because even though I haven't won, you have made me feel the happiest in the world," he told the crowd.

"Without you I wouldn't have the strength to try again to win next year. Instead, we will.

"It will be difficult, but I, compared to the others, have the strength of having you, the whole of Spain, behind me. We'll fight together."
Come back, Luca Badoer, all is forgiven.

Symonds: Tragic if Kimi loses title in court

Renault's executive director of engineering Pat Symonds believes it would be a "tragedy for the sport" if Lewis Hamilton was to be crowned Formula 1 world champion in an appeal court.

McLaren has appealed the results of the Brazilian Grand Prix after the cars of Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld, were alleged to have contained fuel outside the legal temperature range.

Should they be disqualified in the hearing on November 15, Hamilton could inherit fourth place and thus amass enough points to dethrone Kimi Raikkonen as champion.

"If McLaren appeals and win, the FIA are not duty bound to award Hamilton any additional points at all," said Symonds in Renault's latest podcast.

"They could disqualify the cars but they don't necessarily have to move people up the order, that's entirely at their discretion.

"It would be a tragedy for the sport after a year like we've had, if suddenly a week after the last race we changed our minds about who was world champion.

"So I very much doubt the FIA are going to do anything about it."

Symonds added however that the incident had highlighted the need for the FIA to update and modernise some of its scrutineering procedures.

"There are plenty of areas where things are a bit wooly and this may be a timely reminder to everyone to tidy up their act a little bit," he said.

"If you are dealing with rules and courts of appeal, you should be looking at things as if it was a civil court."

Symonds also revealed he had some sympathy for McLaren's plight in 2007, after the team proved to be arguably the most competitive force only to come away with nothing to show for it.

"I think that's devastating," said Symonds.

"When you look back at 2007 in years to come, people who actually remember the year will say that was a great fight between McLaren and Ferrari, but people who just look back at the record books will say oh, McLaren didn't do very well.

"To really be the class of the field, and I have a lot of respect for them, and come away with nothing must be terribly hard."

Asked why he thought McLaren had found itself in a situation where it lost the drivers' title despite having both its racers in contention, Symonds replied: "I think there were a few decisions that weren't correct, there was the allowance maybe to let the drivers forget that they were employees so there was a certain amount of mismanagement there.

    "But I admire McLaren.

"The adversity that they have had this year. The whole thing of the court case hanging over them, their so-called rogue employee, it's an awful lot of dirty washing to be doing in public.

"They have held their heads up and kept their dignity I think and I admire that."
Come back, Luca Badoer, all is forgiven.

Did anyone here read the comments made by Max Mosely regarding Hamilton... is it me or does it look like Max Mosely should call it a day... I mean Hamilton was not as dominant as schumi was so a comparison between the two does not seem justified. I don't understand the hype... yeah he almost did it but he didnt quiet get it done... i wonder if most of the hype is simply because the kid speaks the queens english... ?!

I recently watched a documentary named " Lewis Hamilton the billion dollar baby" It gives a very interesting insight into his life right from childhood with some great footage and that`s when you realize how well Mclaren have prepared him. He has been trained to say the right stuff to the media to the extent that he gets on your nerves. One example i can give is what his father and he said right after the Brazilian GP about how it was a great moment for everyone and that "they were not disappointed" Made me laugh `cause only a robot wouldnt feel anything! That for me underlined how artificial everything is with them and how important it is to say the right stuff infront of the cameras.

This is probably the best example i could find for now. Check when he looks up and notices the camera and starts smiling and pats Raiikkonen of all people.

    @ UncleKracker

I watched that youtube video... man that was awesome... i know that is what pisses me off... this guy is becoming like the super model of F1, granted he can back it up with skills... but it just feels so artificial...
I loved it right when he pats kimi on the shoulder after he spots the camera... kimi's reaction is like WTF?!

    @sub7er

    Oh no you didn't!
I guess my point was more that we can wait to give that verdict on Hamilton... and schumi fought it out with alonso and the better person won and I didn't hear anyone compare alonso to schumi... they simply said that Schumi got unlucky...

anyway to make what I meant simpler read the following article:

Former world champion Fernando Alonso has left McLaren after agreeing an early release from his contract.

McLaren and Alonso have had an acrimonious relationship this season and a team statement said that both parties had "agreed to move on".

Alonso is free to join another team in 2008, and his agent said neither party would pay a financial penalty.

Red Bull and Renault are the favourites to sign him, and BBC Sport understands Red Bull are the more likely option.

McLaren described the split as a "mutual parting of the ways", adding: "Both parties believe that this was the right decision.

Alonso said: "Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out. I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team.

"Yes, we have had our ups and downs during the season, which has made it extra challenging for all of us, and it is not a secret that I never really felt at home.

"I know there have been suggestions of favouritism within the team and people say a lot of things in the heat of battle, but in the end I was always provided with an equal opportunity to win."

Dennis added: "He is a great driver but for some reason the combination of McLaren-Mercedes and Fernando has not really worked out, and in the end we reached a stage where none of us could find a way to move forward."

It is not known who will replace Alonso as Lewis Hamilton's team-mate, but Williams's Nico Rosberg and Renault's Heikki Kovalainen are the favourites.

Alonso joined the team this season on a three-year contract worth a total of 50 million euros (£34.7m).

It has been widely speculated that wherever Alonso ends up next season, it will be for only a year before moving to Ferrari.

Ferrari last month extended Felipe Massa's contract to 2010, which appeared to end the possibility of Alonso joining in 2009 because Raikkonen is also contracted to the team for another two years.

But Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is known to be a fan of Alonso, and said after the conclusion to the championship last month: "Alonso is world-class in every sense.

"I have appreciated very much his sportsmanship. He lost by one point and I believe it wasn't his fault."

It is possible that a vacancy could be made for Alonso by paying up Massa's contract at the end of next season.

So the last shoe drops... the only thing left to tie up the 2K7 season is the appeal filed by mclaren... any ideas how that is gonna go? I get the feeling they will reject the appeal... I havent seen F1 appeals being given precedence over the decisions of the stewards... not often anyway...
so I guess 2K9 alonso and kimmi a la Ferrari... can't wait for that season

yeah... BBC were claiming that redbull was the front runner to sign up alonso...

But that theory of ferrari releasing massa at the end of 2K8 and getting alonso sounds kind of weird eh...

    Alonso offered return to Renault

Renault chief Flavio Briatore has offered Fernando Alonso a deal to return to the team which helped him win the 2005 and 2006 world titles.

Alonso has left McLaren and speculation suggests he could move to a team for a year before a switch to Ferrari.
