Default Do We Need An Auto Industry At All ?

I would like to share views from my brothers if Pakistan need at all an Auto Industry.

My personal opinion is that we Pakistanis be better off buying used but good quality cars from Europe, USA and Japan. In those markets, used cars depreciates alot and it would be highly beneficial for us to have those cars instead that we pay horendously high prices to local assemblers.

Governments seem indifferent to the local assemblers price policy and car quality standards. Have a car safety tests on all the locally assembled cars smashing at 50km/h....and see the results. Such safety tests are a must for each and every model that goes out in the markets of Europe, USA and Japan etc. so why not Pakistanis be showed how safe are their livies on those wheels.

With the abrupt increase in prices here in PAKISTAN, against the international recession is beyond my comprehension. Who is responsible require little guessing. Are we the richest nation in the world who are not bothered or do we have Governments comprised of richest people who are not bothered by the increase in price. Either one of the two is true ?

And of course, what about Customer Protection Rights ????

Do we have a fair competition....I mean is there a competitor to local asemblers ? No not really...it is a MONOPLISTIC market they have created for themselves.....good or bad.....you are bound to buy them at their prices.

One of the reasons, why sancations are imposed on Pakistan textiles in Europe can be attributed to our refusal to allow their import of vehicles....India on the other hand.. are real smart guys,....they allow Europeans to set their plants in India and in return have captured almost all European market for various items...

Pakistan desperately need to give a boom to their exports....this will bring much needed foreign exchange...not through begging for a few billion dollars....imagine only textiles can bring over 10billion dollars per annum....whereas today Pakistan is feeling proud on getting a mere pledge to get 5billion dollars from Japan...

A Land bestowed with such resouces and Nation bestowed with such talent by Allah is begging to the entire world for aid......it is matter of concern.

    @Naveed4speed
Patriotism is one thing and value for money another.
Local assemblers cannot twist my arm in the name of patriotism and making millions on the other hand, again riding on my back......
Being a buyer I have an absolute right of choice and above all to see if I am getting the best value for my money. Simply raising the slogans, as is usual among the politicians, Be Pakistani - Buy Pakistani....simply won't work with local car assemblers as ours.

i m not talking about patriotism!
i m talking about the economy of pakistan!
and economy is the back bone of our country at a time!
which can be built by providing reliefs from govt!
and govt shall start some plants there self!
and the more we have export the more we will earn forigen exchange!
and wasting our money on import will decrease our economy!
there for we need a some reilef from govt!
and some good steps for our industries!
either these are auto or public industries!
our economy and money value is decreasing day by day!
    only due to imports!
once we have our good economy+good value of currency!
do what ever u guys want!
    till then!
we have to strive for it!
    thankss

So why all the support only for the local car assemblers who are not even manufacturers ?
What about us, the ultimate sufferers at the hands of those perciless, who have forced us all in paying "ON" for buying a zero meter car since the past one decade now !!!!
What does the govt. has done to stop it ?
Why govt. has always allowed them to increase their prices against all odd ? Why ?
Who has got vested interests ?
Such blood suckers better be showed the way out of the Pakistan economy. They should be taught a lesson that we Pakistanis are not yet dead.

absolutely we need an auto industry

we need , atleast an automotive engineering university

people have such talents here in pakistan and they are not being polished , seriously the kinds of ideas and tricks our people come up with , not even the highest paid engineers and mechanics can come up with.

this should seriously be given a thought.

My opinion is to Ban All Imports, and everyone should start using Local manufactured cars. This is the way nations r built not by ur way.
The only thing to do is to slightly improve the Quality of local cars. Like ABS,SRS etc.

    @^^^^^

that again leads to unfair competion and consumer exploitaion by the Car brand leaders of pakistan

have we forgotten the pre-import 2002-2003 era when we had to wait ages for car manufacturers to provide cars ,and pay hefty ON money as much as 3lacs on an XLi at that time.

and the poor quality , we never even heard of things like like passenger side air bags, navigation, and comfortable and durability of the japanese cars before that period

i think importing cars has raised the living standard of your pakistani average joe.

A very nice analysis and I fully agree. We DO NOt need ann auto industry if thats what we can call it.

The other side of this picture would be to have a "Democratic Govt." looking out for the consumers whichnis not really possible at the moment since all the people in the govt. and bureaucracy want to fill up their pockets with bribe from the automakers and make crappy policies to help the monopolistic automakers.

We need local auto industry to not only survive but thrive, although not the way they are doing it now; government protectionism. There are so many secondary industries that are in existence because of our local automakers. To make it fair for the consumers, the duty on imported vehicles needs to be reduced drastically. That will encourage healthy competition and will force the local assemblers to not only improve quality of their products to compete in the market but also upgrade their operations to manufacture all of the components including engines and transmissions rather importing them. It will also help launch more local manufacturing units to provide quality parts for the market.
My opinions, suggestions and thoughts are strictly my own. I reserve the right to be human and make mistakes.

    @saad
As i said that our local car manufacturing companies need to improve their quality.
And if our govt do this then how come we will be able to enjoy a 0 meter car. We all will have to use a used car. U know if u import a zero meter vitz it will cost u more than 15 lacs!!!!
As far as monopoly is concerned as i said we need a strict auto policy, and some department should be established to keep an eye on the manufactures.

    I agree with you.

We don't need an assembling industry here, since its birth, it never worked out well. From Bedford trucks to cars, nothing came out yet meeting an international standards when it comes to not only to built quality and safety but also to design.

Not yet I have seen any technical based industry flourished here (except the defence industry) or might be those industries would boom too if run by Army (good example is WAPDA, how much they have earned and how much technical advancements have been gain since it came into existance), when the basic industry need is not there, how come we can expect the advancements living in third world country where talented people praised so much that they force to move to other places to have decent living.

I think it is better to shut off these vampires, who are just sucking the hard earned money of poor people of this country and not providing them what their money can be worth. Also, being here for more than 10 years, something must have done to evaluate their progress and money making. Furthermore, as we say in urdu "Jis ka kaam usi ko saajhay" let the Japan and other countries should do their work and we should import from them rather than wasting our money in buying substandard vehicles. Otherwise India (if we had good ties with them) wasn't a bad choice either because when things like potatoes, onions and vegetables can be imported from India, why not cars?
