Default New biker and need guidance for shifting gear

    Aslam Alekum,

I recently bought Honda CD-70 2007 model bike in good conditon. Now, I have to tell you all that I never ride a bike before but now I've learned basic riding and wants to put my bike on the road.

My house is very big with front and back grounds, and I rode on these grounds and now I can easily start the bike and apply the second gear.

Now I want to ask some questions.

    1) When do I apply 3rd and 4th gear on road, as in home I can't appply it as bike goes too fast.

    2) Can bike be stopped at 3rd gear or I have to shift down to second or first.

    3) Is it necessary to apply fourth gear when my speed is not going to be above 30-40. (The road I'm going to drive is Murre Road Rawalpindi which is very wide)

    4) What should be the gear in traffic and chocks.

    Thanks

you seem to be very new to riding bikes.. so my first advice to u is that unfortunatly like many other areas of life where we can lear from only reading or seeing bike is not something like that.. it not only needs practical experience but also expert supervision ...

so never ever go to murree road unless u are proficient in riding it .. it may take at least a couple of weeks .. so until then dont go there it is suicidal even for experts .. i have been on this road and it is quite dangrous and densly occupied...

now as far use of gear is concerned us the following technique

" only apply gear when u have pressed the clutch lever [in] ... i.e. clutch duba hoga tho gear lagavo.. AND second condition that needs to be fulfuliled before applying gear is that at the time of applying gear the race should not be applied .. in other words the u need to remove the race incase if u are going from first to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd and so on.. yani gear ma daltha waqt i.e jab app ka left pavon ka nicha jo lever ha us ko dabana sa pehla app ka race lever wapas apni free halath pa ana chahia.. free halath sa murad ka app na race ko gumaya nai ha... do not confuse the zeroing of race with zeroing the speed ..

jab gear lag jaya then quickl and immediatly race ko usi jaga tak la ka avo jider pehla tha and then phr aram aram sa thora thora race barhatha javo..

now as far other questions are concerned u need to know why gears are used... they are used to provide varoious required features .. i.e. agar charhai charna ho tho kam gear istimal karhta hai.. normally first gear tho majbori samaj lain ka start karka usi ma hi dalna ha.. 2nd gear ko or first ko use kartha hova app raja bazar ki sabzi mandi jaisa situations ma use karha hain.. 3rd gear is provides some balance between the 4th gear and 2nd .. i,e a good combinaiton of torque and speed.. and fourth gear is used for commuting on free roads ..

remember jitna gear high hoga utna hi bike ko control karna mshkl hoga.. kionka hi gear ma speed ziada hithi ha and bike ka inertia ziada hotha ha..

for 3rd question, bike ko app kisi b gear ma stop kar saktha ho,, but follow proper stopping procedure..

4th question: long and short lazimi nai but acha ha ka app 4th gear laga lo...

yar agar app na 30-40 pa chalana ha tho 4th gear is ok but 3rd is prefered blka app 3rd ma 30 tak hi rakain and then 40 sa ziada speeed ka lia 4th gear use karain..

    akhri sawal:
    only rexperience will tell u..

u should search the forum there was earlier also the same thrread that contains a good discussion and is a must read.. try u will find it..

Is the bike brand new? If its a brand new bike then make sure that you do not shift up at a very low speed nor at a very hight speed and don't forget to change the first oil after 500km and don't ride with second passenger.

This should be the recommended speed to shift up: I don't have much CD70 experience so someone may correct me if I am wrong.
    1st to 2nd: between 10km/h-15km/h
    2nd to 3rd: between 20km/h-30km/h
    3rd to 4th: Not below 35km/h

You can stop the bike even in the fourth gear, but make sure that you engage clutch before doing that. Reduce speed, leave the throttle and engage the clutch, apply brakes and bring the bike to neutral while the clutch still engaged.

The gear you drive in does not depend where you are driving but the speed at which you are driving. With the passage of time you will learn everything.

Try to understand the feel and sound of the engine, if you shift up at too low speed you will hear a sound from the engine called LUGGING SOUND, this is potentially bad for the engine especially a new engine. In the same way if you are going too fast in say 1st or 2nd gear the engine sound will be noisy, means bike would be running on high rpms, time to shift up to the next gear.

Since you have a big ground in your house, I suggest you do lot of practice before you bring it on an open road and keep away from Murree road till you can handle the bike properly. I hope you do have a driving licence???
