In essence GS500e is like a wife......you are in for the long haul.....she will become your life partner...someone you can take on long journeys with no worries. She is someone you can depend upon. She will forgive you for your mistakes. While on the other hand Bandit is a high maintenance Mistress. It will be an ON/OFF relationship of short episodes of fun filled experiences Neither will you treat her with respect, nor will she forgive you for a mistake. You wont trust her on a long journey and you will have to buy her expensive gift every now and then. Eventually you will part ways.......she with a weaker soul and you with a broken back.

Its a lifestyle choice! I like the one night stands with a hot mistress more. Yes I had to be cautious and wear protection all the time and watch my back............but its an experience worth having.

    GS500e:
Both are extremely different animals and have very different fan following. GS is an air-cooled 2 cylinder motorcycle used by our law enforcement agencies therefore spares are easy to find and mechanics know the bike well. Yes it has best fuel economy in its class.....easily gives 25KMPL...maybe more.

    BANDIT:
Bandit on the other hand is not as easy to maintain as a GS500e but it has a inline 4 cylinder water cooled engine which makes "that" heavy bike sound we all are crazy about. It has all the characteristics of a typical heavy bike like a quick throttle response, sound, speed, looks etc etc.
Bikes don't leak oil, they mark their territory.

@aximaxim explained it really well, and probably there's not much left to say on this topic. But I really want to add a couple of cents from my side as I have been through a similar decision process. I wanted to go for a naked street bike that I can actually use and keep for some time.

If budget is not an issue for you, and you get an almost new bandit, it shouldn't break very often. But the problem is that there aren't many in our local market. you can easily get a legal gs500 in good shape for ~200k, but this is not the case with bandit.

Thats the thing..... a good specimen of bandit is really difficult to find....... I have tried and failed....... mostly you will find early to late 90's model.......matlab the bike will be around 15 years old....... bandit has a high revving thoroughbred engine.......and one can ruin it very easily. Rather than looking for a good condition bike.....find a cheap one and rebuilt it properly with genuine parts. you can find OK bandits for around 100k (even less)....keep another 70k or so for complete engine overhaul with genuine parts.....new tyres......new paint job.....make sure the bike you buy is complete and not missing anything. Also make sure the wiring is genuine and not fiddled with.......run away if you see dodgy wiring. Also bandit has a habit or overflowing carbs....thats something you have to live with. All this will require not just money but your time. Scrapyard will become your new home. Its not easy to keep a high maintenance mistress. It requires patience but when its done.....it would be worth it.
