    Default Cross continent trip

Hello people, after quite some time of browsing through forums, i've decided to sign up to get your help.

I'm looking for a heavy bike that's registered and legal and all. I intend to go on a road trip probably till Turkey, so the bike needs to be in a reliable condition, fuel economical, but not too expensive. I'm thinking a 250~400cc should be just fine.

But i'm confused between a sports bike and cruiser.

    1. Can you advise me whether a sports bike is suitable for such a trip?

    2. Can you suggest contacts for the option of getting an old auction bike and fixing it up with new engine and everything?

    3. How're these chinese bikes that became so popular? I think they're making some respectable 200cc sports bikes.

    4. Where and for how much can i get a used good condition registered CBR 250, something like 2000 model?

Interesting post. I think you should consider a street bike or a cruiser which offer a more comfortable and "natural" riding position than a sports bike for long distances. You can also look at scramblers/street legal off roaders as another good option.

In my opinion light bikes should be avoided so you want to go for as higher cc capacity as you can afford.

Before starting your journey there are many things you should consider, some obvious and others perhaps not so, I am listing a few that come to my mind at this point, feel free to discuss this further with me if and when you are really keen to make the trip happen:

    - Visa's
    - Enough FX for your trip including some contigency
    - Clearance for temporary import/export of the bike
    - Bike insurance valid for all countries you want to visit
    - Medical insurance
    - First aid kit
    - Emergency repair kit for bikes
    - Tyre repair kit
    - Good map or a good bike gps
    - Provision for some emergency petrol

    Hope the above helps

    Thanks guys, esp Ducati.

Unfortunately i really am serious about such a trip. The last one i went for was on a mere bicycle back in 2002. Me and a couple of my buddies traveled from Khunjerab Pass to Islamabad. Lifetime experience i tell you. At Sost, one step prior to Khunjerab, we met a guy who was riding a bike into China across the Himalayas, and he'd already travelled 11000km from Chec Republic.

I'll be doing thorough homework before embarking on this journey, and yup (Ducati) i'll be considering all that you mentioned, plus much more... you forgot to mention firepower :-)

So come on bikers, help me out here with specifics about a bike. I'm leaving for Islamabad tomorrow morning then to Karachi on Saturday on the hunt. Need to make a purchase!!!! Help!

Sure mate give me a shout anytime

Hey I read your post on your bike trip, looks like it was some cool adventure ! why dont you post more details on it ? I'd be very keen to learn more about your trip. I did a similar trip many years back on the same route but in a Pajero (wasnt brave enough to go on a bike ).

In terms of firepower, and I hope you meant bike cc , if it was me I'd look at something like the BMW GS1200 or the 650 however I dont know about its availability and cost in Pakistan so a more realistic choice might be a 400cc bike. I'd not advise you to go for anything smaller than this.

There is one guy who has a workshop for bike repairs and has got many frames of old bikes, located adjacent to "Dyno Shop" G-10.

A gun???!!! I'd refer to my earlier post mentioning 'firepower' :p

Plus lets not talk BMWs, and Buells and Bigdogs and Ducatis here shall we? Lets talk an embarassing 1.5~2lac scale bike...max!!!

Isn't there any really really really rich guy out there who'd just DONATE a Triumph 2008 to me? It's a noble trip you know, dedicated to PEACE!!!

    Jazzua,
I know of a BMW for sale in Karachi. Ideal for you. Contact Pakwheeler Jamaal.
Dont make the mistake of going on a small bike. It could break down and you will be stuck with transporting it back (carnet rules do not allow leaving it there unless you forfeit the security deposit)
    Good luck on yr trip!
P.S. Most countries will not allow guns into their territories. Dont bother.

Imran, i can't thank you enough for your help, especially considering the circumstances. Although i haven't bought a bike as yet, every decision i've taken till now in searching and testing bikes in the last few days has been in accordance with your advice. A deal is almost final. Will talk to you about it when we talk.

Khan sahib, yeh 44 kya hai? :-p

No, i'm not looking for any replica, nor the original. The thing loses its charm as soon as you get it. Doesn't remain unattainable.

Plan jab banay ga to idhar forum create karoon ga inshaAllah. So keep your eyes open for anything like that. It won't be anytime too soon though, that i can assure you. Need to learn to ride a bike with instinct first :-) Although i've driven bikes a couple of times before, but only a couple of times, and this'll be my first bike. One small step for mankind, a major one for me!

Yes thats the one. For the more budget concious selection something like the Kawasaki KLR650 would also be a good choice IMO.
