Classic Bikes with power for leisure riding is what a Royal Enfield bike stands for, and Royal Enfield leads this segment of the market in India by leaps and bounds. Its exquisite range of motorcycles combines distinctive styles with power, riding comfort and ruggedness to deliver a unique motorcycling experience.

    The Beginning.

Royal Enfield India was set up in 1955 when it started receiving 350cc bikes in kits from the UK and assembling them in Chennai, India. But, eventually the entire bike was manufactured in India and a couple of years later the Company started manufacturing the 500cc Bullet. By its sheer power, unmatched stability, superior riding comfort and rugged good looks, the Bullet dominated and continues to dominate the Indian roads. It is the dream choice of every motorcyclist in India with even the Indian Army and Police endorsing the Bike.

    The Eicher Chapter

In 1990, Royal Enfield entered into a strategic alliance with the Eicher Group, and later merged with Eicher Group in 1994. The Eicher Group, is one of India's leading automotive group with diversified interests in the manufacture of Tractors, Commercial Vehicles, Automotive Gears, Exports, Garments, Management Consultancy and Motorcycles.

Since then, the Company has made considerable investments in modernizing its manufacturing technology and systems and in 1996, when the Government decided to impose stringent norms for emission Royal Enfield was the first motorcycle manufacturer to comply. Royal Enfield is amongst the first few Indian companies to obtain the WVTA (Whole Vehicle Type Approval) for meeting the European Community

Royal Enfield is a unique Motor cycle and does not emulate any other bike. In fact all the bikes of 40s-50s were similar as of present range of Jap bikes. Royal Enfield Bullet found its way into India in 1954 as a Military Bike and soon the civil demand increased so much that the Indian Importer had to set up the assy plant in Madras. Gradually the parts were localised and in 1968 the Parent company in U.K. ceased operations and since then the Royal Enfield has evolved as a great bike and still going thumping sound. After the Eicher's take over a lot of money has been put into R&D and we have witnessed so many new models. CV point to Electronic, 6 volts to 12 volts, Amal Carb to Mikcarb VM series and so on. 350 CC to 500 and 535 CC engines. Then came the all new AVL designed engine and a new Five speed gearbox followed by gas shocks, disc brakes & BS carbs etc. The present range is Euro III compliant. What to talk of all cosmetic changes and all the engneering corrections to make its engine leak- proof.

We here in chandigarh have a Bullet Club and it organises a monthly get together either to share views or just to have an excursion into the Shivalik hills. I have two Bullets, A standard 97 model and an Electra 2005 model, the latter is generally used by my brother as I could enjoy the Standard one with CB point better. The thumping is unique and it just releive me from all the fatigue in the evening. Electra is rather fast one and better pick up and economy but its feel is entirely different from the Standard

With Royal Enfield at the helm, India is definately ahead of China in terms of Motorbike making. Would love to see a cooperation between Indian Motorbike makers and some of our Pakistani Entity in future.

We all want to see a progressive South Asia.

When Ijaj Ahmad visited Chandigarh for the Mohali Cricket Test his shopping ended with buying an Enfield Bullet Motorcycle from Manmohan Auto Stores in Sector 27, Chandigarh. I cannot explain the feeling when I first rode the Bullet. It is simply marvelous. No other bike in production nowadays could replicate its feel. ( No comparision with Harleys etc ). It is the only bike on which the pillion rider also looks sitting in smarter posture. It is the best motorcycle for South Asian Machos. And believe it gives 40+ average per litre of petrol considering its 350 cc engine and 19 kgs of raw torque. It has been in production in India since 1954 and a very few could find way to junkyards. All the old models are in running condition as people take Bullet as a Cult figure and not just a motorcycle. Keeping a Bullet distiguishes a person from the rest of crowd ( Indo jap bikes ).

India has another great bike which is not in production now. It is YEZDI 250 cc. It was my childhood love. My father had a JAWA 250 which was the parent model. JAWA is a Czeck Company and its Indian venture was started way back in early sixties. It slowly evolved into Yezdi and the bike ruled Indian roads from sixties to early eighties until the Indo Jap bikes entered the market. The company vanished due to stiff competition and also as it was lacking patronage from any Major Industrial Group. I will post the pictures of the bike sometimes later

    @ Shergill:
I have seen ads of "Kohinoor" bike in the old magazines of 60s. Don't know when its production was stopped. I also remember having seen the TV ads of "Shahsawar" and "Shehzore" motorcycles in late 80s. Don't know much about them either, as there is no auto magazine in Pakistan and sources to know more about the history of Pakistani automotive industry are almost non-existent.
However, about "Kohinoor" I know this much that it was a product of the Saigols group. Later in the 90s, Saigols relaunched their motocycle product - this time branding it "KMW", stands for Kohinoor Motor Works. Then the Saigols launched a joint venture with Qingqi motorcycles of China and their company - named Saigols Qingqi Motors Limited - now manufactures two- and three-wheelers under the Qingqi brand.
Most interestingly, Saigols are now planning to terminate their JV with Qingqi, as they have signed an MOU with Bajaj to manufacture Bajaj bikes at their plant. Only the government approval is pending.
    Evolution interrupted.
