I believe that the word 'consumption' that most people are talking about is in relation to the amount of fuel going into the engine rather than the distance covered per amount of fuel consumed. In an ideal situation without taking into account friction and wind resistance, it should be more or less equal at the same rpm in any gear. Although one friend here has suggested that a higher gear would mean lower fuel consumption due to some reason, i think that it would be the opposite since it would take a greater amount of energy to keep the engine ticking over at the same rpm in a higher gear. Not an engineering student so could be (and probably am :P) wrong!
