The first post is contradicting itself, if the owner wanted a good resale value then why did he treat the cars engine like this?
Now to the finer point - lathe machinists will fill those voids by welding aluminium and install new sleeves in the block then face the block too, This creates two problems, the block gets brittle at that place and shaving the block upsets the compression and also the overall height of the engine, which then affects piston protusion and also causing the engine not to line up to TDC correctly. In short the engine will end up as a complete jugaar job with ultra thick headgasket that cannot bear any sort of thermal load.
The above is what I have seen myself, And these sort of overhauls make big money for the mechanic and a big headache for the owner. If the owner is trying to sell this car after this job then its really bad practice both financially and ethically. The best and only correct way is to get a replacement short block complete with oil pump, crank, pistons and attach all original sundries to it.
Resale will not cause the owner to become a billionaire or get boatloads of sawab.
