    Default Overhauling Mehran's Engine

    Dear Pak Wheelers,

A question for the experts. I have a Mehran 1989, and as far as i know its engine has been overhauled 2 or 3 times since purchase. Will it be ok if i overhaul the engine again and if so can anyone guide me to a good mechanic in Rawalpindi or Islamabad?

since it is already overhauled 2-3 times, i'd suggest you to buy a new engine for it, i think most probably it will cost you 25k

Replacing clutch plate every two months

Are you serious, you must be a very rich guy to afford a new clutch plate every couple of months.

Explain why do you feel the need to change C.P and what happens to the old one?

Explain why do you think engine is in need of an overhaul?

Any details of previous overhauls like piston size, bore, main/bigends etc

damn - replace the clutch every 2 months, do you drive with one foot on the clutch? Your cars problem seems to be related to neglected gearbox oil changes and poor maintenance of engine mounts etc. The rest that your engine is dead - will follow if you do not like to keep your car in good shape.

Sir, i am serious and i am not rich just a poor Govt. employee. That is the reason i am asking for an expert opinion.

Sir, the car's gear start acting up like oneday they are soft and nice and the next they are really rough like you have to try twice to get them in their place. The old one are left with the mechanic. The car also loses its pick when the clutch plate starts giving the same problems.

I quoted the mechanic when i said that engine is in need of an overhaul. I asked him if i can turn the AC on in summers he said u should thank God that the engine is still runing in this condition.

Sir, i have no information on the old overhauls.

    Help will be appreciated.

Sir, u might have a point recently like 4-5 months ago there was a problem with the car's gear box and it was odd that no mechanic could figure it out i tried 4 different ones in 2 cities. The problem was that the gear oil was coming out of the little black plastic pipe on top of the gear box i think its called exhaust pipe. Finally after what seemed countless hours and obscence amount of money one mechanic took the gear box to Cha Sultan and there was a master mechanic of gear box named Mr. Masqeen Ustaad he told me some rod in the gear box wasnt straight so he did his magic and the problem was fixed ever since that time i seem to be having more and more problems with it.
Could you be kind enough to guide me to a good mechanic in the areas that you mentioned if you know anyone there. Please.

Sir i think that the cost of labour and other stuff is not included in that price.

And according to one of the thread and expert on Pak Wheel he said the price would be 35K in Peshawar for a 2005 Mehran engine.

but the problem for me is that how can you be sure that the engine would not be a stolen one?

Your clutch plate will glaze and wear out along with the pressure plate if your clutch does not fully release or you keep your foot on it lightly while driving. Its is not recommended practice at all.

The engine mounts need to be in very good shape of you might have missed gear changes or the gear selector straining the select forks inside the gearbox, because when you let go of the clutch the whole engine rocks opposite to its rotation to move the car. The mounts keep it in one place.

Lastly - you should not be having such short engine life, It must be
    1) bad overhaul
    2) bad oils and running too cold all the time
    3) choked or bad PCV causing acidic gases to make the oil into sludge killing your engine.

Mehran is a very very simple car to work on, find a competent mechanic to change/overhaul the engine and make it work properly - its Tstat should be in place, PCV should be working, no leaks etc. replace gear oil every 2 years etc. Tune-up or lubricate distributor every 4 months to keep it in top shape.

yar the number of overhauls doesnt really matter. the place the pistons move in is called the sleep. whenever the engine is fully overhauled the sleeps are replaced and bored according to the specification of the engine. the block isnt harmed in nay manner so it is safe to overhaul it as many times as you like. however the engine oil pump shud be replaced whenever you overhaul the engine because if you need to replace it later you will need to open the engine again. other sensitive parts such as the radiator shud be cleaned or replaced according to condition.
