Default Desperate for Help with Mehran

    AOA,

I am a novice when it comes to dealing with mechanics. I've been told that my Mehran 2004 has got a number of problems. The water body in the engine needs to be changed as there is a continuous humming noise when I drive the car. The kamani of back tires is "leaking" and the bushes (suspension?) also need to be changed. The latter things I was told when I went to a mechanic to discuss the humming noise. You know they always look for a "shikar". I've checked with a couple of other mechanics and the number of problems seems to be increasing.

Now if someone could please help me on how to proceed? Suggestions are welcome as well as recommendations of reliable and economical mechanics in Islamabad. I am on kind of a shoe-string budget. What repairs need to be done now and what can be delayed?

What kind of humming source you feeling? Means is it coming from Engine area or Tyres? Also what problem are you facing in rear suspension/kamani while driving?

The humming begins as soon as I start the car. The sound kind of resembles a fan but is def not the fan. The mechanic said the water body needs to be changed.

As for the kamani, I had no idea there was a problem until I went to the mechanic about the humming noise. To double check, I went to another and he also said the kamani is leaking and the bushes are cracked (???). The kamani or whatever its actual name here is referred to the structure close to the rear wheels. He also said the wheels have gone "backwards" and the car is not "soft" when he pressed it from the back side.

the leaf spring (= Kamani) is simple flat metal stick of approx 36 inches length bent in curve with bolt eyes on both ends. I assume by leaking KAMANI the USTAAD meant Shock absorber. the rear 2 shock absorbers will not cost more then 2000 for brand new OEM pieces. For the humming sound, when changing water body also check for timing chain tensioner bearing. I recently encountered such hum in my KAROLLA and replaced the bearing set.

Thanks for the tips. So the actual problem could be the same of timing chain tensioner bearing? Need to get advice of a couple of more mechanics I guess.

The rear shocks are 1700 bucks for a new OEM pair. No more than 200 bucks for labor and a 15min job.

to verify the water pump noise, take it to a mechanic who has a stethescope or make one with a pipe and screwdriver, touch the waterbody housing for noise while running, it should be smooth.

If not - change it, while its being worked on and your mileage is near to 80,000 kms, ask them to change out the belt and tension roller. and crank and cam oils seals too (even if they are not leaking - old rubber ages and leaks when you wont want it - replacement of said seals requires timing belt to be removed anyway) Be there to monitor the work - a good mechanic with good hand tools will only take 2 or 3 hours at max for this

For suspension work - take car to sarviss tayshun which has a lift, take a big screwdriver with you too, get under the car or ask someone with experience to rock the bushings and joints, anything that is moving with the screwdriver is damaged. rotate all the wheels and check for bearing noise. If you do hear noises get genuine bearings, seals and genuine "disc brake" wheel bearing grease - the drop point of such grease should be 250*C or above, Mobil, FUCHS, Caltex all sell it. The best in my experience is FUCHS Renolit LX-PEP2 which is also the original green colour wheel bearing grease of Mercedes Benz (MB part no A002989005110) - very very long life - the original fill in mercedes front wheel bearings is good for at least 10 years.

The mehran bearings are cartridges - but they are usually void of proper fill of grease, removing one seal of each bearing, washing in petrol and filling with new proper grease makes them very long life.

For the rear kamani, check the shackle bushings and the shock absorbers - replace if they are leaking, Gabriel made in Pakistan work good and take about 30 minutes to install.

For front bushes - if they are worn, replace them but do not let the shop use grease to aid in installation, instead buy a tube of KY jelly from the pharmacist and ask the shop to use that. Grease and oil rots out the rubber.

As usual all Guru's on Pw never owned a mehran so they can't answer ur query
this is sound is of waterbody and 2004 is an old model even 2009 models have replaced waterbody so go for it and get a genuine one for 1500rs and desi ones can be found less then 400rs plus it will be needed to open timing belt case so it will take a few hours
regarding kamanies There are bushes back there and they don't work more then 2 years plus i suggest go to a speacialist kamani wala in Rawalpindi ask him to grease kamanies and put "nawar" between them Nawar is the fabric was used to make "charpaies" so that u don't face other issues with kamanies.
About meachnic well that waterbody issue Dealership can handle but kamani wala u have to go to a speacialist in Pirwadi or old pindi city area
Thanks for posting ur query in my thread.

The same humming sound is coming from my car to.. I've change the water body (water pump) 2 months ago but now again the noise is coming.... I'm sure its due to the pump ... i think it is because of the rotating pump touching the engine block where it is fixed... !

and yeah my mechanic took exactly one hour to replace the water body!
