    Default Suggestion in 8-9 lacs

    Dear fellows,

I need to buy a car in few days/weeks. As written in the title, my budget is goes to 9 lacs (could be a little bit more but only under special circumstances like i find something extra-ordinary).

I have been out of the local car market for quite some time (was abroad) so need some comments/suggestions. My primary aim would be driving in Islamabad and frequent trips out of it in nearby locations (say 100-120 kms). Therefore, good mileage plus comfort on highways (other than motorway too) would be a concern. Having some luggage space is desirable but not absolutely necessary. In terms of resale, I intend to keep it for a couple of years (max 2-3 yrs) and by then probably go for a brand new model.

I initially scanned the market and thought between Liana, City, Civic and Corolla (as if i had other choices ). I am forming an opinion against Liana and City, mostly because I do not like their shape but also because they aren't seen as having high resale and are a little small as well.

In short, I would like your opinion about whether to go for used Civic or used Corolla. Which models should i get in my range and how you can compare those models (not todays one). By comparison, I mean
    -their general condition
    - features
    - mileage
    - maintenance
    - resale after 2 yrs

    Thanks for your inputs.

    THanks for your answers.

Its not just the name of a car that I want but also its potential advantages. Why would a belta or a lancer be better than a corolla or civic?

    Will I find the spares/mechanics cheaper/easier?
Do they have more features/ more comfortable?
    Do they give better mileage?
Will they have better resale value after 2 yrs?

When I narrowed down to Civic or Corolla, I had the above in mind. Unless I am missing something that you can convince me of otherwise?

Just to add, I do plan to have it on CNG either already fitted or I'll fit it myself. Also which model of Civic/corolla should i get in my budget, in Islamabad.

    thanks again

Sir an Eagle Eye 04-05 VTi PROSMATEC or SE Saloon A/T.

I personally like the VTi for long routes but SE Saloons are very well maintained by owners.

Lancer GLX with CVT is also very good if you do not mind the maintenance.

In your budget of 900k I would say go for AE100 or AE120 imported corolla.

AE100 is known by many mechanics, cheap parts, reliable, economical. AE100 and Indus corolla 1991 to 2001 with the same shape so no problem in parts. Engine is different. AE100 with 5AFE (mostly Auto) 1500cc engine whereas Indus corolla with old engine which was in EE90. Engine in AE100 is really best one. AE100 has good resale.

AE120 is new shape of JDM corolla from 1997 to 2001. Same engine as AE100 so reliable, economical and more comfy. Mechanical parts for the engine will be same but other body parts will be hard to find but not impossible. Will sell but not as fast as AE100. Sale actually depends on the availability of particular buyer in the market. At the moment there are few pakwheelers looking for the same JDM models.

You can also try Indus GLi or SE Limted with 1600 cc 4AFE engine. This engine is also from JDM but again ride of AE100 and AE120 is far better. Also u will get ABS, airbags, power windows, power mirrors etc in almost all JDM corollas. The best way to decide between the two (AE100 & AE120), take a test drive

Go for Honda Civic 2005 or 2006 if you want to run it on petrol and if you want to run on CNG then go for Corolla SE Saloon or any other variant. Both cars are good in comfort and look etc.

Plz dont fall off for belta or lancer they are both a total waste of money no matter how appealing they may look !! You have made a right choice Toyota vs honda, if i were you i would concentrate more on civic 2000 vti oriel or perhaps a corolla se saloon 2004, but mind it they are both in high demand, just keep on looking till you stumble upon one, they are well suited in a 9 lac ruppe budget !!!

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply.

Unfortunately, I got lost somewhere in those models. This is when it shows I've out of the local market (and country) for some time. Can you please guide me of the difference between a GLI and SE Saloon of 2004? And do they both come in 1300 and 1600 version?

I am thinking of sticking with the GLI but unfortunately, most ads are for the 2.0D so it looks I'll have to look around a bit harder.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am not too fan of the belta or lancer myself. Even though, it might sound like "bhair chaal", I think I'll stick with the popular models for the variety, maintenance and resale values.

Can you guide me of whats the differences in EXI and VTI and Oriel and Prosmatec? And a 2000 VTI sounds a bit too old for this budget.

They aren't so bad. I've been there already and roads aren't that bad. For example..hattar, kamra, tarbela, abbottabad, etc. Some contains a few patches that are bumpy.

Thank you all for your replies but to get more specific answers, I would like to rephrase the original question.

Which one of Corolla or CIVIC (both local) would be better and what model should I get of each in this amount as a good bargain?

Sir for Corolla, the imported SE Limited E100 (Indus shape) with 5AFE is best, if you cannot find one the the E120 SE Saloon A/T is best.

The E120 was launched somewhere in 2002 (March, if I remember correct), petrol variants were XLI, GLi and SE Saloon (replaced by Altis from June 05).

SE Saloon was the top grade model with a 109 HP 1.6L engine, Rev limiter, A/T option, side skirts, bigger 14" wheels with alloys, 2 din pioneer with 6 speakers and 4 spoke steering.

XLI and GLI had same power train, 1.3L 80 HP with 5 speed M/T and only some minor difference in equipment like power windows and mirrors in GLI.

The 7th Gen Civic (CatEye) was launched in 2001 (May, I think).

EXI has a 110PS 1.5L and VTI has a 130PS 1.6L engine, VTI also has alloys with bigger 15" rims, all 4 wheel discs ABS brakes with EBD and retractable mirrors, also option of S/R and leather seats and SAT NAV.

Both EXI and VTI were available in M/T and A/T, a 4 speed PROSMATEC shift.

In 2004 (June, I think) Honda launched the Eagle Eye Civic, added 4 wheel disc brakes to EXi, double beams (hi low) headlights (both variants), reshaped bumpers with fog lights space (both variants), optitron meters (added in 2003 to both VTi and EXi), reverse chime for PROSMATEC models and rear seat head rests, a Kenwood MP3 player with 10 DISC changer was also included to both variants.

I would personally prefer a VTI PROSMATEC any day over any of these cars, Lancer GLX GV is also very good, little bit expensive maintenance.

Majority (75%) of EXIs are more well maintained then VTis.
