    Default Meter tampering

It has become a common practise nowadays for car sellers(not amongst pakwheelers I am sure) to rewind the meters to fetch a good price for their car. It is highly unethical and cheating to a great extent.

I had a personal experience in this regard which I want to share.

I was looking for a clean and low milaged Honda City Model 2005-6. I searched various showrooms in the vicinity of Khalid Bin Waleed road. I come across a car which was of my taste, though the price was a bit high, but I made the deal and paid him the token after scrutunizing the original file.

Final payment to be made next day after mechanic's approval. Mechanic rejected the car after thorough inspection saying the meter is tampered as it was showing only 30000 km. I asked how can you be so sure of that the meter is rewinded. He says he determined by looking at 3 things. The pedals, original seat covers and steering wheel. When I confronted with the showroom owner he conceded that meter is tampered but not by him by the owner, however he returned my token.

I advised all friends to take special care before buying a used car, by accompanying trusted mechanic to the showroom or to the private sellers.

Money differs from an automobile or mistress in being equally important to those who have it and those who do not.

Is there a proper way to find that a meter has been reversed ? What ways do they use to reverse a meter ?
I sold my city 99 with 175K on the meter, never thought of doing that. Its pure cheating.

simple rule while buying the car, never look at the car first, look at the owner first, jesa owner wesi gari,
secondly, on average car runs 16000km an year, but inquire the owner, how he used it, u will have a better idea

Agree with both hash4u and tahir_isb , people generally look at the mileage as an instrument to judge the car. Now my car is a 03 Se Salloon. Its meter is around 30k,while getting it serviced the guys washing it asked me if ive done something to the meter cause according to him its impossible that 03 model car is still on 30k in 2011 its like driving 3k in 9 years. so people do get suspicious if the mileage is low which is logical but i don't get the part that doesn't lesser mileage a bit suspicious on 90% of cases? cause the interior has to match the lower mileage in condition

@all people pointing out the obvious pattern in milage
bro i recently sold my car 2005 model below 60000 and all original
i have 4 cars to drive one at a time now if i had put my car in showroom would it become suspecious.
my point is there should be a way technical one to actually find out exact milage or at least meter tampering

If its that easy to make someone a fool than why not Meter tampering - smoking

PS. I mean to say that we should be more vigilant while buying things. And should not rely on mere meter readings. Ive personally never tampered the meter of any car.

Dont agree.... YOUR driver did that probably.... not ALL drivers do that....

In Army you get petrol/diesel for the entire month for all M.T Vehicles in a Unit. (not sure about a corps or Div).

Dont agree with your driver because a driver will go where his officer wants him to go, no account for mileage there. Probably for petrol yes, but definitely not for mileage.

I sold my city 98 CNG with 160,000 KM on odo. sold it after using it for almost 6 months due to the reason it was driven soo much. Golden color, repaint by the previous owner neat and clean beautiful car. i was worried how this car will be sold as here people have mentality that its driven a lot, so i planned to reverce the meter, but didnt do it, as its unethical and i am not feeling good to attempt it. so finally placed an add in paper for sunday, so on saturday my friend came with the party to show the car they liked it and got the desire amount and deal was finallized before the add appear, i lost 600Rs of an add.

    May Allah bless us.
    Regards

i agree with you. my own cousin is in army and he says same. it is very common for faujis to reverse meters of cars. though it is punishable if you are caught doing it.

This practice is pathetic. What happens is that when somebody tries to sell his low millage car, people start getting suspicious. I have a mehran 99 and in all these years it has done 77k kms. So if I'm going to sell it, I will have to face difficulty regarding this

Please forgive me to revive this old post. My cousin is looking for a 2013-2015 GLI and we were first looking for bran new but then decided to search for used ones. He said we can find a nice car in Karachi. I just warned him the dangers of buying a used car including the meter tampering. In foreign countries meter tampering is considered fraud and punishable crime. In addition in foreign countries whenever a vehicle goes through regular service and maintenance through a mechanic shop or dealer shop, they keep in and out mileage record. Hence there is absolutely no chance for meter fraud. Why don't Pakistan introduce some laws regarding the prevention of meter fraud?

Laws are effective only if followed and enforced.

in pak there's no need to check the meter cox 99.9 percent cars are tempered! Just look at the condition of the car .that's what i did when i bought 70k driven 09 Honda civic. ive looked at the condition of the car condition of the engine and the interior and bought it .i knew the meter was tempered although the dealer who happens to be our family friend and one of the best in our town said meter reverse nahi hai but who cares as long as car is in good condition .
