    Default petrol pump cheating?

so i usually fill my tank full and pay with credit card.

this time, the fuel tank was nearly empty (about 90%), but i did not have credit card with me, so i just paid 500 cash for the petrol...

so the meter was zeroed, and it ran until 500 displayed on the screen.. guess what, the fuel needle hardly moved at all.. i didn't notice that until i drove like 5 km or so.. then i again 500 cash for more petrol at another station... this time the needle moved as much i had hoped...

and no it wasn't the case fuel reserve being empty, and the first 500 just refilling the reserve, therefore explaining the non-movement of the needle at the first fill... i am quite sure i was cheated..

next time step down from your car and see if the person is starting the meter infront of u and than shut it infront of u , make it as a habbit so u wont regret next time .

yes i checked it in front of eyes... he zeroed it and filled petrol until Rs. ran to 500.... that part was perfect.. what i suspect is that the petrol did not flow, while the meter ran!

i later mentioned it to a friend of mine, who owns a motor cycle, and fills petrol for Rs. 50 every day (just enough to last one day for him)... he mentioned the same cheating procedure at this petrol pump... he said, while the meter ran, he simply raised the petrol hose, and there was no petrol flowing...

the person filling admitted "mistake" and gave him extra petrol for "free"

my mechanic told me that he use to fill petrol of 200 rs everyday but he was not getting enough mileage , after that he started a new technique , he takes 1.5 litre emtpy bottle to pump n tells them to fill it , no chance of cheating n he said that now i need to fill petrol worth 150 everyday instead of 200 , majority of our pumps r cheater , a new cheating is stealing gas nozzle ,they steal it n tell u that sir there is no nozzle there n its v risky , buy one from us for rs 200-250 , they sell us our own nozzles

That is normal here, got cheated quite a few times. Now I only go to Shell Petrol pumps (where I haven't yet got cheated) or sometimes when It's urgent a decent looking Caltex pump or only company maintained PSO pumps.

Please mention the name and location of the pump where you were cheated. It will help fellow pakwheelers from getting duped.

Caltex at Zainab Market (right behind State Life Building) is an honest gas station. Filling my ride from there for the last 2 years.

Got cheated at PSO petrol pump at Wahdat Road.
I asked him to fill up for Rs. 1000. He filled up for Rs. 500 and stopped the meter, I asked him I told you to fill up for Rs. 1000. He said I didn't hear and start the meter again. And I actually got the petrol of Rs. 500. On the first attempt only meter was running and there was no petrol flowing.

So, what I suggest here is only go to good pumps (which are looking good and clean with new machines). Don't sit in the car while they are filling. Hang out and see yourself what is going on.

If your tank was 90 percent empty as you mentioned, it means you've already used up almost half of your end reserve fuel. The first five six liters went there.

The next 500 Rupees brought your needle up.

For Rs500/- you hardly get any gas that can move the guage in dash cluster. You need about Rs4000/- plus to go to gas station otherwise you loose in long run going back and forth for gas.

90% empty without the reserve... reserve was completely unused..

that is exactly what i did... how do you know if its "air" moving the meter, or "petrol"?

i also have been using exactly this pump, Caltex at Zainab Market (right below State Life Building)... seems quite honest, except that it seems to sell normal RON89 petrol....

i wanted to try out the caltex pump right near this zainab market one... (if you go from the zainab market caltex though the road having the pia ticketing office, this is will be right at the end near aligarh old boys association - or search "24.853039,67.022481" in maps.google.com - it will pinpoint the location of the pump)... this pump sells RON90 petrol, and also sells HOBC, but also seemed not to give me anything for Rs.500.

The caltex station below state life duilding sells both (premium and HOBC). I've been filling HOBC from there all this time.

The other gas station that you've mentioned is not good. The fuel fillers there are faulty and will not stop once the tank is full. It happened once that I was telling the guy to stop as the tank was nearly full but he continued to pour in gasoline. The filler could not stop automatically and petrol started pouring out of the tank. More than a litre was spilled that way. Never went to that pump again.....

When every other sphere of life is plagued by the worst corruption, it is inevitable that most petrol pumps will also engage in cheating their customers.

However, I would like to caution people from getting petrol filled in containers instead of directly into their vehicle/ motorbike. Obviously, petrol is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. There are so many risks or dangers to handling petrol directly that they outweigh the benefit of saving some money. Your life or your well-being is at stake. STAY SAFE.

PS In many countries, it is illegal for a filling station to dispense petrol into bottles. Of course, they also wish to prevent arson, while we couldn't care less!
