    Default Traffic and Highway Engineering

    In this thread we share our knowledge about traffic and highway engineering,
    such as
    Designed speed of highways and posted speed,
    SSD(stopping sight distance),
    BD(braking distance),
    Intersections,
    lanes and types of lanes
    and any topic related to transportation engineering about which u have knowledge.

    traffic and highway (transportation) engineering is a branch of civil engineering
    and i am expected lot from civil engineers.

    speed which is post on roads is called posted speed and posted speed is always less than designed speed,
    if the road is designed for 120km/h then posted speed will be 100 or 90km/h
    decrease in speed is for safety factors

    Nice information. I studied about Braking Distance and Thinking Distance (Human Reaction Time in a way) this year in school. Please share some more information if you have.

    Arterials: most wide main roads.Many small roads are linked to it. E.g shara-e-faisal road in karachi with an estimated traffic around 5 lac vehicles per day.

    Collectors/ Distributors: Distribute traffic from arterials to link it with your local street or collect traffic from your local street to divert it to arterials.

    local street: your gali where you live.

    Lateral Clearance:

    refers to the width of the road.
    if we provide 3 lanes of 12' width. then people will squeeze through lanes making it a 4 lane road which reduces the efficiency of road. hence we decrease lateral clearance to 10'.

    Vertical clearance: vertical height of any underpass or bridge so that it is feasible for traffic keeping in mind that increasing vertical clearance increases cost of construction

    geometry of roads is based on designed speed and that is maximum speed, if we go above designed speed than accidents risks are high,
    e.g horizontal curves are designed at some specific speed that speed is designed speed,
    super elevation on curves are also based on designed speed.

    SSD = reaction time + BD

    average reaction time = 2 - 3 sec
    SSD = stopping sight distance
    BD= breaking distance

    Designed speed greater than posted speed, as posted speed for light vehicles is 120km/h(max) so the motorway may be designed on 150km/h

    because its not like the road is going to fricken open its mouth and swallow them if they go fast.. at higher speeds the chances of crashing are higher since you get less reaction time and factors like that

    150km/h is safe speed after that risks for accident is high,
    specially on curves you have to maintain posted speed because if any thing is on road, then it require a distance to stop ur vehicle, if the vehicle speed is above then designed speed then its hard to stop a vehicle

    sight distance is important part of road geometry, in urban areas sight distance problems are high therefore posted speed is less for urban roads,
