Default Mercedes C180 or Honda Accord Cl3

    Hi
I am now stuck between the choice of Mercedes C180 90s model and Honda Accord Cl3 2001 model.

Please let me know your opinion in terms of
    1. Comfort
    2. Fuel consumption
    3. Parts price

I am not concerned about the looks of both cars or acceleration. Accord in good condition is easy to find while C180s are mostly in very bad condition.

I prefer automatic transmission with sunroof in both cars.

google it - and the owners manual will tell you simple operation of the vehicle, not its technical bits.

its also available in small portions at the dealers too, but the original factory FSM for any MB vehicle is a library. but MB thinks that you are very very good with working on cars - so it may seem cryptic to "green" people. The Haynes one is passable but not very complete. Generally its a rule of thumb to relax and have a clear mind before starting work on a benz, some bolts are "Gutentight" on the car and some odd bolt sizes can be a pain.

Rightly said Xulfiqar bhai. FSM lib's are quite difficult to understand for novice. But Haynes manual (though not very much comprehensive) is a bit easier.

Btw I always learn alot from your helpful replies. Keep up the good work

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I have seen this C180 1995 model. auto transmission. mileage is 130,000km
    Problems
    1. exhaust tip is black. (i took my mechanic to check it who said the engine is weak)
    2. car is knocking (maybe tuning is required)
    3. ABS is not working
    4. Power steering pump is noisy
    5. car gives a sudden shake when you transfer from drive to 3rd gear while driving.
    6. heater is not working
    7. seats need some foam
The owner is demanding Rs 10.5 lac.

Any idea how much it would cost me to fix the above things. and is it worth buying ?

the black exhaust tip means that either the coolant thermostat is missing or the MAF sensor is dead or incorrect for this engine causing rich running (the car has no CEL and you cannot see problems like that) the faulty MAF will cause engine knock also. Once you put it on star diagnosis - the faults will be seen.

the exhaust will be oily - its pretty normal for any 4 cylinder mercedes benz engine to use about half to 3/4 litre oil in 5000 kms.

ABS not working (itself) or other bits not working too like the SRS etc. (usual cause is a bad overvoltage protection relay which is the tall silver color relay with a fuse (old style) or 2 fuses (new style) on the top of it. Or other failures like wheel speed sensor failure.

Power steering pump noisy = you need another pump. Shift shock on your transmission (which is not electronic) is caused by incorrect vacuum signal at the transmission modulator. The modulator itself can also be faulty. The shock is also caused by worn out flex discs on the driveshaft and will have also worn out the differential mounts too. not that expensive to repair. You jmight also want to have the rear subframe bushings renewed - those will be worn out by now, Check by driving on the highway, if the car sways in the wind, those bushings are shot, a MB mechanic worth his time knows how to replace them, requires making a puller too.

Heater not working maybe a simple heater valve failure or bad CCU or even faulty diverters in the HVAC box, not easy if its starts to get complicated. Did air flow direction correspond to the change on the climate control unit?

Seats are easy business for any seat rebuilder.

The blower seems to be working fine. The air pressure can be increased and decreased. The temperature seems to be constant with no change while changing the temperature dial.

Why would a benz engine consume half or 3/4 litre oil in 5000km? No other vehicle would do so unless the engine rings / piston are faulty.

Any recommended MB mechanics in Lahore?

every engine consumes a little oil, its normal, and MB 4 cylinder engines use about the quantity I mentioned. the 5 and 6 cylinder engines use a little less than that.

The blower speed regulator is then OK - did you check that the air is actually diverting to foot, defroster and face when you select the positions? With heat nor working you should have took a look at the heater valve in the engine room. Another way to check the CCU for proper control is to select max heat and wait for the HVAC box to divert air to the side, defrost and foot vents only, if it does the CCU and diverters are working, if not - you need to sort that out, there is also a grille on the roof lamp console, it is supposed to be sucking in air (cabin air sample) to regulate the temperature, its checked by putting a 1x1 inch piece of paper and see if the grille sucks on it. If it doesnt the air sampling motor requires replacement.

Recently i have been trying to decide between these two machines also it would be nice if owners could put a little input waisey i always thought the merc would have better economy and better kick being a RWD but i guess i was wrong although i think merc parts are more easily available compared to Cf3
